[m]Well I would suggest Tenjou Tenge, Immortal Regis and Mahou Sensei Negima.

They aren't directly what you seek.. but as the story develops it gets more and more like the things that you are looking for.

Tenjou Tenge being pretty much ecchi and fighting, Immortal Regis is a manwha and supernatural fighting (like Ten ten) and Mahou Sensei Negima magical fighting and harem. Anyways check them out and Immortal Regis is probably the only one that gets interesting right from the beginning.

in each of these, the couples are at least like "experts" in their own respect... if that makes sense. anyways, i recommend them, i seriously enjoyed each one

Zippy Ziggy equal in their own respects.. and pretty funny/interesting
The Breaker both badasses
Xblade just read it, its good
Inukami! both equal in their ridiculousness

Thanks again for the recommendations, guys! You're fabulous! I actually hadn't heard of many of these - particularly the ones recommended by Cariqt and Juicifer. I guess that my filtering of the "ecchi" tag had eliminated these releases, but now I think that I'll give them a try! And CatzCradle, thanks for the shounen ai recommendation (Seven Days). Will definitely check it out.

No one recommended Hellsing? Alucard x Integra fits the standards of a power couple to a tee. Note that Alucard may be technically under Integra's command, but they're constantly watching and lashing out at each other in a battle of wits, in their conversations and their demeanor around each other. You need to watch closely for the undercurrents. 😉

Quote from Kat-Katka

Ayashi No Ceres..maybe
kamikaze kaito Jeanne

I think KKKJ deserves "maybe" too. I don't remember Chiaki having heavy baggy like Jeanne does. But at the same time, I suppose he never really looks down on her. But she might cry on his shoulder a lot because she's alone. 😐

And Atlanta, taking into consideration everything you mentioned after the 1 paragraph (which is grounds for starting a discussion, but maybe it won't be here since you're looking for recommendations), it could be that it's so hard to find manga like this because of lazy writing, or that in a certain genre the mangaka would cater to the demographic. I'm not reading as much shoujo manga lately (almost none, in fact, even if I really kept count) since the guy does not seem covetable enough usually for me to slog through ___ [hundreds] of pages of the manga. Sometimes I look forward to a guy character and he doesn't really have that much to him (guys are simpler in manga than girls...at least that's what I'm seeing/thinking) when I finish the series. 😐

It might also be just a "media" thing, not just for Japan, but maybe more obvious in Japanese culture through their manga. (I'm not sure if even things published in North America are always "equal". But I guess the guy tends not to be a loser who can't get a girl if it was dating or romance. But to avoid playing the "women are victims" card, sometimes even a female writer will setup of the female character to be weak. 😐 )

There are a lot of older and traditional Japanese men who don't see women as equals in the workforce and get to only be "office ladies". I was told this info in junior high about 10 years ago, but I doubt the mentality has changed to equal North America's. I think I even watched this bit on the news that was a year ago to a few months, where husbands were trying to work out "equality" and their marriage with this class offered in Japan. Sometimes guys were taking the class so that the guy wouldn't lose something like a pension from their company due to their marriage falling through. I think this shows that Japan has a ways to go in the understandings and expectations between husband and wife, but maybe the same thing happens in North America but no one has setup such a service (possibly due to no companies threatening employee benefits). I've read a book called The School for Husbands where this British husband goes to a reform school for husbands because he wants to save his marriage before his wife finally goes through with the divorce.

Oh Hana Kimi seems to be good for this for what I remember. I watched the Ouran Host Club anime and although everyone is rich and privileged around Haruhi, she can still hold her own even though the guys will make "commoner" remarks or image "commoner" situations. Power!! too. Well look at all the gender-benders I mentioned. I guess when a girl tricks the guys into thinking she's a guy, it levels the playing field.

W-Juliet has a sequel, too..... 😁 W-Juliet II I like your specifications, Atlanta. At least, I like a lot of the series they've brought up. 😃 I suppose a too-submissive lead is annoying, for me. And kitsuneHime, on that subject, my current wallpaper is that bit when

Mako's telling Yuuto to back off Akane if he's not serious.... Heh. And Emura was talking about the storm coming up, and Mako's firmly saying, "Coincidence!" 🤣

An old topic, but what the heck. If you're still interested in these kinds of couples, check out Gokusen.

In Gokusen, the romance is much subtler than you normally find in shoujo/josei (the manga focuses primarily on the plot and the characters, rather than on Yankumi's love life, but the romance is definitely still there). The main couple in this series is brains (him) x brawn (her). Yankumi is both a high school math teacher and the granddaughter of a yakuza boss. Her love interest has his own accomplishments and balances her out very well.

Overall, the manga is a personal favorite of mine. 🙂
