On a female vocalist.

Disregarding lyrics, genre, style, but focusing purely on the tone. Try not to list EVERY vocalist that you like, but just one or two.

As far as tonality, Billie Holiday.

Bjork

Julie McKnight

Sade

Tracey Thorn (Everything but the Girl)

Beth Gibbons (Portishead)

Sorry, but couldn't limit to just one or two choices.

For female, it would be Amy Lee from Evanescence.
As for a guy, it'd be John Ondrasik. Otherwise known as Five for Fighting.

Craig Finn of The Hold Steady is probably my favorite vocalist currently; he's not really a great singer, but for me it's more about vocal delivery than actual singing ability, and you can't help but listen to that guy's voice. If I was going by singing ability for guys I'd probably pick Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater.

If I had to pick a girl it would be much more difficult since there are much fewer decent female led bands I like. Probably Adele Bethel of Sons and Daughters, Leila Moss of The Duke Spirit, or maybe Eisley's Sherri Dupree.

How many female vocalists have you listened to? I'm not arguing that Avril is a bad singer, but man, if you listen to older artists, like the chick from Heart, or Stevie Nix, even, you'll see what I'm talkin bout.

Mike Shinoda's voice fits LP's music very well, though. As far as rapcore goes, though, I have to give that title to Zach De La Rocha.
