Anyone know WHY it's called D. Grayman, I read and dropped this series and now I'm just wondering why its titled what it is.

Hoshino already said why. D. as in dolls, grey as in a mixture of black and white (evil and good), and man, meaning that humans are dolls of fate who are evil and good.

Found it around the net, some say the author said that in some interview or somewhere in the manga. Not confirmed though.

Lots of manga/anime have really abstract titles... like, I read somewhere that Bubblegum Crisis is meant to evoke the image of a bubblegum bubble growing bigger and bigger, and the crisis is that it might POP and get gum all over everything.

well he did say something about why he chose d gray man as the title when he was answering questions from the readers in the manga books...hmm...which one was it...*looks through the manga books now*heh..sorry about that randomness..

I know that at some point in the manga, during one of Allen's speeches he makes a direct reference to D. Gray. Although I can't for the life of me figure out where it was (it might have been when allen first used clown crown ??) I definatly know that it did happen

Q. What does the title, D.Gray-Man, mean?
A. It’s a word that I made up and has various meanings. It could apply to Allen and the other characters as well…On a separate note, I was thinking “Dolls” for the title before I came up with “D. Gray-Man”. Other titles I came up with before that were “Chronoa” and “Zone”.

I've heard that title before as the name of the underlings who work for the lord of the underworld. Can't remember where, but that was definitely what they were called.

My other theory is that it seems like a play on words for Allen who stands between two sides, the akuma and humans. He isn't black or white, but just in the middle, the gray fine line.

.........Um...... apparently D.Gray-man is based of a book called
"The Picture of Dorian Gray"........The book is about how the person called Dorian Gray has a potrait & all the sins & aging isn't reflected on him but on his painting....In simple form, he doesn't grow old... the painting does.....
But I have no idea how it relates....

I know, it pisses me of how people always discriminate against the darkness! Black is myy favorite color and white is my second favorite.

It's not color discrimination, it's color symbolism. It makes art more meaningful. It doesn't mean people hate black.

if i recall correctly, hoshino-sensei said that eventually the real meaning of the title will be revealed. note the letter "D" on the spirit of mana walker's forehead.
also, she said that a lot of stuff will be revealed like lavi's eyepatch and whatever is behind it

If this is so, I'm going to keep reading. I stopped after Cross's "death" and when that weird one eyed thief come out.
