Man, i never saw dragon ball evolution but when i searched it up, it was nothing like dragon ball
reasons: boy in highschool discovers he's special, he has to save the world, gets the girl...thats like any movie, but they paste the name dragon ball on it, they should of sticked to the real storyline
The Last airbender, i looked forward to it, but when i saw trailers, it looked horrible, first thing i noticed characters dont act like in the cartoon except maybe katara...but aang wasnt happy-go-lucky, sokka wasnt funny...
when i watched the movie-becuz i wanted it to beat eclipse, support airbender for the movie, n stuff...if u never saw airbender, u would probably be confused, the director skips around so much like scene to scene thats it isnt connected, u dont understand one part or the next, the director kskips so much , u dont feel the characters develop at all, like their relationship, sokka, katara, and aang r suppose to be like a family, but in the movie, the sibs r doing it out of responsibility-i didnt feel any real love from it
last thing that irritated me was the pronunciation of sokka and aang, that was so gross...its lclearly that the ppl who made the movie didnt watch the show or they disrespect it!
fire: indian? earth: azn? water: pale whites and a few azn.. air:all sorts..

tl;dr, If a fictional character is a certain race before a live-action adaptation get made, then there's no reason to not cast someone who's of that race unless there was some reason they couldn't find anyone of that race (Which certainly wasn't the case when casting came up in The Last Airbender).

Boycott Cowboy Bebop?

I don't see why anyone should...

Well, unless they don't like Keanu, or they think that a live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop will blow no matter what. laugh

Spike's ethnicity was never confirmed. And he was modeled after a Japanese actor. So wouldn't it make sense to make the life action Spike japanese as well?

EDIT: I do understand Keanu is part chinese and therefore asian.

That kinda makes sense, but it's like Keanu was made for that role.

I do see the point you're trying to make though and I did kinda overreact with that last tl;dr part. It's just ridiculous seeing some characters from a work getting a race lift whenever they go live-action with it cause there's tons of minorities qualified for the part, but they never get a chance. I still stand by my opinion on how the whitewashing needs to stop, but the last part did make me sound like some kind of crazy ass racial purist. laugh

If you want to get technical. Spike is Martian, therefore has no traditional nationality to speak of. But whatever, I'm reserving my poo-flinging until after the first trailer for bebop comes out. If it comes to that. cool

If I did want to be technical I could say Spike was in a Chinese mafia and therefore more than likely Chinese. Nationality is taken from where you live. Not where you were born. So even though he was born on Mars, he spends most of his time in space so he really isn't a Martian. I'm guessing you mistook my referring to Japanese for a nationality(even though I said ethnicity but whatever). And I don't really think I was getting overly technical earlier.

I don't really notice white washing.. Maybe because I'm white?? The only time I notice stuff like that is if the main character looks so much different from his live action counterpart. The only people I would've been looking at to see similarities were probably Aang and Zuko. The rest can be whatever as long as they act the part. Maybe the fire lord as well.. I am curious to know if I would've noticed this if it wasn't already all over the place way before the movie even came out.

I saw an interview with M Night a while back and I remember him mispronoucing Aang's name. I cringed so hard when I heard it... Then I pictured myself trying to correct him on set and subsequently looking for a new job.

EDIT: As for the CB movie. Sunrise has control over whether or not the script passes so I have faith.

So basically you guys are saying they killed another great series. I watched the entire series and I saw the last 4 eps at least 10 times and you say they couldn't even watch the first ep to see how their names are pronounced. It's so typical. I remember trying to watch Inuyasha in english, but after 5 minutes of their names being squashed I've dropped it and looked for a jap version. But Avatar the last airbender is in english and they couldn't even do that. I'll stop here because whatever else I have to say would get me banned.

I was dumbfounded

I mean in the whole of south and northern watertribe, sokka, katara and gran-gran were the ONLY white, they were surrounded by inuit! it makes them a total sore thumb and totally unreal. I mean, they didn't even put in a makeup to hide the colour? what is this?

the "good actor" excuse doesn't work! i put that as "didn't even give an effort"

if they were after the "creativity" as some other people in this post said, then they sould make their own movie, not base it off a pre-existing anime. to make that much um...changes isn't creativity, it's betryaing the trust of the people who read the movie title as "avatar-that last airbender" because the audience wanted to watch avatar, not some other weird show.

Well, it seems like you did.

It was my intention to play devil's advocate - nothing personal. (your argument's even longer)

I mentioned the creators agreeing to the changes to shift some blame. To me, they are just as responsible.

I don't really see miscasting as whitewashing. But what do I know, maybe M. Night and his casting crew as a bunch of racists and this movie is one big racial conspiracy.

--------------
I don't know if that last post about "creativity" is for me, but I said "creative representation." Not quite the same...

Pro
-decent fight scenes
-decent special effects

Cons
-horrible 3D
-stilted acting
-weird casting: The cast wouldn't have bothered me too much if they had given a better performance.
-poor script: This script was complete garbage.
-lacks the charm that made the original tv show so popular

Overall, this movie sucked; it ranks high on my list of the worst movies ever.
