I've been playing the game for 8 hours now and it's been rather
boring gameplay-wise. It's almost been like Crystal Bearers and
that thing never happened. I am honestly just waiting for the GC
movies to start everytime I get to move forward. I can't even
grind ffs. I am just walking forward and getting annoyed by every battle,
since character growth is so strongly limited to plot, so it doesn't
really pay off trying to level in the limited amount of creeps.

agreed.....
its just CG...if the graphics were terrible this wouldn't be that good...like avatar...

FF XIII is a failure. A real one this time. Well, this will be the last FF game for me. I am fed up with Square Enix, since they only bring out games that are not even mediocre.

My advice: get Star Ocean: The Last Hope. Nice game.

This final fantasy is made of fail so far, the battle system is lacking, the level up system is slow, the story so far is iffy, and there is a cut scene about every 5 minutes. Square-enix, I am disappoint.

Meh... 30 hours in... finally got to a "nonlinear" part of the game... not much to say though... Just an open field with a bunch of monsters running around... and almost of 'em can kick my group's ass, lol. I can appreciate 'em for trying something new, but this is straying too far from the formula I'm use to. Hate how these damn teammates don't do what I want em to do/target what I need 'em to target... Only character I like in the game is Lightning, Snow, and Fang... every1 else can go fall off a cliff for all I care, especially Vanille... and WHERE THE HELL IS MY NABUO!!

I give up on Square-Enix... I wish Level 5 would resurrect the Dragon Quests series for the consoles... lol.

What are you people talking about? Bad voice acting? Stop exaggerating.

The story is really slow paced. I thought the beginning(and most of the middle) was boring but I figured that was because it was all things I'd seen before. The story starts to get more interesting in the later chapters which is a real shame. They should have pushed some bits in the later chapters towards the middle. Also there wasn't someone you could really identify as a villain in the beginning which made it a bit boring too. However, the game does have some good points. I think the summons are very balanced they aren't too strong or too weak and the ability to control the actions of your eidolons was a nice touch. As for the paradigm I actually like the idea of switching roles that allow certain abilities. It feels more organized and since you can't control the actions of your party members it helps with strategy. It would be nice if there was a "fast" pace instead of just normal and slow for the battle speed.

Well, it's good to see a forum where people aren't being blinded by the name FF. However, I don't hate the game as much as everyone here seems to hate it. The game gets off to a sloth pace, and the battle system is boring for the first 3 hours. After the paradigm system is introduced, I think the battle system becomes exponentially better. The biggest knock on it is that it is simple and can make battles extremely easy. However, there is some strategy required. Not so much in what attacks you should use, but rather what paradigm formation is best for the particular fight.

The story is pretty much non-existent and I'm 27 hours into the game. I mean, it's there, but it's not interesting. The characters are pretty weak. Fang and Lightning seem good, but that's it. Vanille is your typical cutesy character, but I can tolerate her. Sazh was just the token black guy early in the game, but he developed into a little bit of a deeper character as the "story" progressed. Still unimpressive, though. Snow is a bad version of Zell, and Zell wasn't even that good of a character (still good though). Hope should die.

Overall, it's ok. It is definitely a downgrade from FFXII, which I think gets a lot of unfair criticism (from fans, not critics). It sure looks pretty, though. However, the trend continues. Will Square ever get back to their glory days from FFIV to FFIX?... Probably not. But who cares? They're making their money. But I was not as interested in this game as I am for FF Versus XIII. I'm hoping that doesn't flop.

Edit: Yea, I'm also wondering what's up with the bad voice acting claim. That's definitely not one of the problems with the game. FFX had bad voice acting, imo. FFXII had much better voice actors. XIII is right on par with XII.

For me, I'm not totally against the voice acting. The accent or their voices doesn't bother me much but at the start of the game, it's their acting that put me off a bit. It's just that sometimes it seems like they just there to deliver the dialog without any thought into it. That's what got me feeling I want to throw my controller at the screen when Vanille talked and later when Lightning talked... but things got better later on.

I guess we should add in which chapter we're already in to say how bad or good the game is. It's pretty much linear in the game but after the Nautilus chapter, the game gets a but "nonlinear".. not to mention, I find the battles much tougher.

What I really wanna comment on is the system of determing how many loot you get or of what quality or which loot it is. The rating system! Sometimes, I don't wanna go into battle when I know my enemies would be tough to beat because of the possible of not getting any loot. You need loot to sell to get money. You need loot as well for upgrades. This gets tedious if you're still in the linear areas where you have to go back and forth to beat enemies for loot. It's not like in FF8 where you get loot for every enemy you beat or have a lot of sidequests/hunts that would reward you with money like in FF12. But I'm still in chapter 09 where the paradigm just started to let me choose who my team mates would be. So maybe after I defeat Dysley would I get any chance for sidequests or hunts.

I've clocked 79hours into my Final Fantasy and you probably guess that I'm bored with it already, it was after I finally managed to max out 3 of my main characters (Lightning, Fang and Hope) Tier 3 (ultimate weapon) and the Genji glove (limit breaker). I was killing adamantoise for more and more money and well, I was basically playing an MMORPG, but it wasn't even massive, multiplayer or online and there was no role playing to be had since I've already finished the game. I enjoyed maybe say the first 70hours and the last 9 hours were relentless grinding so I can see Fang's highwind deal a ridiculous amount of damage with the limit breaker.

Overall worth my money, but the pick up is very slow and chapter 11 where the sandbox starts is a huge cock block. I remember panicking because I couldn't beat the King Behemoth's in Grand Pulse but I finally realised after farming for a bit that I wasn't meant to be able to kill them just yet and had overdeveloped characters and weapons that made the final boss seem "meh" which added a whole new anti-climatic ending. Final Fantasy XIII was worth the money for me, I mean any game in which I could get fully immersed into for 70hours has to be good in some respects, and if anything there is always the undertone of yuri with Fang x Vanille, or you could go for the shota if you prefer Hope x Lightning lol ^^ (Don't take the last sentence seriously) eyes

This is why I never ever play the games, no matter how much I want them. I just watch the CG scenes. I mean, FF games are just mostly movies, but with kinda interaction.

On the positive side, the story seemed interesting, though.

And I really want to watch FF Versus XIII. YAY FOR NOCTIS.

I am 39 hours into the game, almost at the end of chapter 12, and i like the game. My biggest complaint is that i can't switch characters in the middle of a fight. I've also used the summons maybe once each just to see how they were. If the battle system had a gambit like 12 did it would be freakin awesome.

I find it funny how people who dislike FFXIII refer to VII to IX/X as a good FF game, completely disregarding the pre-VII era. >:/ I can still remember before FFXII got released how some fans kept hating on everything post-FFVI; saying how it's crap and all.

Ahh, nostalgia goggles sure makes peoples' perspective skewed. roll It's like there are different fans. The pre-VII fans, the post-FFIX/X fans and everything inbetween.

It goes from 20+'ers --> 14-20 --> under 14.

So yeah... people don't know how to properly judge a game. Most of this FFXIII hate is stupid, biased hate because they happen to associate the FF they played as a child as THE BEST EVER. none If it wasn't released under the title "FFXIII", it'd have more raving reviews... Except for the linearity, you can't do anything about that. You either like it or you don't.

man if you can remember buying and playing FF7 or older, you are too old for games, and therefore shouldn't complain.

Anyways, I'm about 2-3 hours into the game, not very fun, but I guess that's because it's the beginning and it's not GOW where the action is none stop, but at least the story seems ok and the graphics are sweet. The black guy is awsome, he's the best character in FF13

Never too old for fun. wink

Other than Snow I am enjoying the game. Snow spews out WAY too much cheesy shit. He's not funny or cool in the slightest. The retry option and everyone leveling together is a nice touch. I'm lazy and the game caters to my laziness. After playing all those grind heavy jrpgs full of so much side quests and choices this is a welcome break. I was burned out on jrpgs and this game got me out of that. I don't like the main romance for this game. Serah/Snow is boring. Heres hoping FF Versus XIII will have a more interesting romance in it. FF8,9, and 10 are my favorite in that area.

I "dislike" FFXIII because it's a mediocre game. My favorite is FFVII, but that automatically discredits me as someone who completely disregards everything pre-FFVII. Except for the fact that I've played FFI, FFII, and played, but haven't completed FFV and FFVI, yet.

When I play any game (not just FF), I want story and character, as well as game play. There are very few titles that can deliver on all these aspects. FF is one of those titles that has shown to be capable of delivering on those fronts. FFXIII's story is bad. No wiggle room there. It's one thing to start slow. But you play this game for 30 or so hours and you barely get any story. It's not until Chapter 11 (almost Chapter 12) that the story really starts to develop. But by then, you only have 2 chapters to go. That's just bad.

The characters are weak. The only redeemable characters are Lightning and Fang, but even they're just recycled characters from other FF. The game play is somewhat solid (the battle system mostly), but it is very linear. I don't mind that too much, but a little wiggle room would have been appreciated.

FFXII was a step in the right direction. Somewhat weak characters, but a good, solid story and game play. And it was a good game. Period. The same can not be said about FFXIII. We can try to blame it on people not being able to properly judge video games, but that doesn't change the fact that the game has a lot of flaws that have been mentioned by multiple critics.
