I dislike disproportionate bodies the most, particularly disporportionate faces (wide smiles that make them look like the Joker - yeah, I know it's a stylistic thing, but I don't like it). I also dislike:

Action "swooshes" that are so complex, dark, or thick that you can't actually tell what action is supposed to be happening. Tsubasa Resv. Chron. annoys me in this regard.

Blushes that go off of their faces. I know it's a stylistic thing and not really "bad art", but it annoys me - there's generally no excuse for it and it looks sloppy to me.

Ehm, why does messed up body proportions get the most votes? I don't see anything wrong with it, rather it can be quite the unique drawing style, maybe expressing some state of mind through the art style, hence why the body proportions are "messed up".

I have more trouble with cliched/mediocre art,
which there are dozens off...

My thoughts exactly. Stylized art with exagerrated proportions can still be enjoyed, in my opinion.
Cliched mass audience-designed artwork really turns me off. Its all over the manga market, but I can't stand it.
Oh and by the way, I enjoy art with messy and undefined linework. A good example includes Dead End, where the gritty artwork adds to the atmosphere of the already grim and ugly its set in.

Too bad there's no "inconsistent art" option or I would've gone with that.

Explain, please. + A pic maybe...

Inconsistent is just that, inconsistent.

Quality of drawing's all over the place with no consistent level of detail to the characters, effect, or environment. Can go from pretty detailed or clean lines 60~80% of the time then go to really rough and lots wasted lines when it's not necessary (necessary as in not like previous pages or panels of same or similar scene/situations).

As much as I want to like it, FLCL is all over the place from really crappy art to pretty decent, the fluxuation between the quality really irks me... none

Proportions, because I'm a perfectionist. I don't mind exaggerations, but when it's a serious scene, and the guy's eye is not where is should be, I'm bothered biggrin

I'll go with "messed up human proportions"...I know many mangas where the head of the characters is just too big. It's okay for comic relief...but other thant that...it's horrible...I can't enjoy a manga with messed up proportions...why even bother being mangaka?

Messy lines (or clutter) for me. It gets frustrating when you can't differentiate a character from a tea kettle.

The only art I'd consider "bad" is when you can't tell what the heck is supposed to be happening. (O_o)

This ("messy lines" seemed to be the most apt option). The other visual quirks I get used to as I read more of the series.

First post (yay!). Having studied a bit of illustration, I could rant for days about bad artists. Really, what it comes down to is bad art being when the artist just doesn't know what they're doing. Usually, bad artists don't understand structure and shading, and thus cannot draw dynamic angles, or they don't have enough experience or understanding of line and lineweight, resulting in flat, uninteresting characters.

There are also 'artists' who try to draw the human body without understanding it at all, giving us hideous abominations like Grappler Baki or some of the disjointed characters found in the first few volumes of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.

Basically what I'm saying is art will be repulsive when the artist does not have propper training/experience or just otherwise know what they're doing. I've seen everything on the poll's list implemented effectively at one point on another. They are only ineffective when they are accidental and a result of poor effort or skill on the part of the artist.

i never really care about art that much, but it's really irking to read a manga about a girl with eyes that take up 60% of the face, a huge head to boot, a neck the size of a pencil, and a chest that is double her waistline.

good thing that i usually get bored with the stories in mangas with that kind of art.

What a refreshing response! I thoroughly enjoyed that, and when you think about it, it absolutely makes sense.

I go with disproportioned body parts...it's because the character starts looking like they were born funny (really, there's no nice way to put it =/).

It depends on what atmosphere the mangaka wants to invoke. If you have realism or action then gritty art is the best for me. Examples go such as Tsutomu Nihei's work (Blame! Biomega). For comedy I'd let away with disproportional body parts but not that much since its still a headache to watch sometimes. And yeah the worst thing for me is disproportional faces, Clamp style has weirdly thin people but I don't mind it as such but if you draw the face weird then I am going to really hate reading the manga. (mosty eyes from shoujo art).

Oh and girls with breast that are way too big for their age or just way too big period. Seriously don't you ever get any middle sized ones?
(example of this is Sekirei)

For me bad art varies, as long as the art style fits the story, it is good art. When the art and the story doesn't fit together it becomes bad art.
