Ive been lurking Mangaupdates for years, but just had a question. . . . . . .
What is with the groups releasing so many titles that are licensed? Totally licensed, I mean, they are scanning the TokyoPop or VIZ release!
What are everybody's thoughts on this? Seriously, Im not trying to start a big fight or anything, but Im really wondering about this.
Thanks

im not a big fan of it. Its one thing to scanlate it yourself, it is another to just copy it straight up. Its funny though, i have no qualms about doing that to comic books...

I'm not against it since that stuff is not licensed in Russia and we don't have (almost) any manga released here. So the scanlations are a godsend to me and the only way to read manga at all.
Although it's a whole different story in the US, for example. But that is not for me to judge.

hi hi
on the subject of licensed manga...
i dont think reading licensed manga is a crime but most of the manga that is license automatically disapears for the most part in mirc.
sooooo i dont think it gets distributed too much after that.
on the other hand i would love if we could keep track of what gets licensed like we keep track of what gets released.
i was wondering if its not to much of a hassle or a bother to ask manga-updates to create such a thing...
please let me know what you think
i will be reading, SANK YOUUUU

Well, for people like me who live in Germany it's hardly possible to get Manga and if there weren't these subs we wouldn't be able to enjoy these Mangas. So I think it's okay if there are scans of lincensed Manga. I wouldn't be able to buy them so there's no loss for the companies.

taboo topic. ppl are usually opposed to this but use your own judgement and sense of justice. You are the one who takes the risk and time and effort to do so.

Well, thats not really true. I am from Germany, and we have quite a lot of officially translated Manga. Not the same stuff licensed in USA, but a lot.
By the way Stealth, nice reply!
One thing that sort of annoys me, is that when people speak of licensed, they always mean USA. If you look at the Age/Gender/Country Thread, you will see that only something like 1/3 or so of the poeple here come from there. It always is annoying when people take USA as the reference for everything. Because Viz does a release doesn't mean People in Portugal can buy the Manga.
and otherwise distribuating licensed Manga is the same as downloading Films and Music. Illegal, and very very common.
thats all

Downloading licensed manga is piracy and illegal full stop. We shouldn't try to sugar coat things and hide behind the various facades.
In terms of availability, as long the company is still printing and shipping those volumes out, they are available. Whether or not you're 8yo girl living in Antarctica without money or credit card does not make downloading licensed manga any more legal than committing murder.
Thank the hells that the online piracy laws are in still the grey area, unregulated and have no real world wide standardized body to govern over, thus possess little power to prosecute and pursuit further action.
I don't deny that I have downloaded and read licensed mangas, I don't deny that I'm a anime/manga fan and like others to join in, just don't be oblivious to the truth about "Licensed Mangas".

No but seriously... for me it all depends on where you are. If something gets licensed in the US, there is no reason for someone living in the Burkina Faso to stop downloading and reading that manga.
He can't get that licensed version, and actually the license is limited to the USA teritory so he isn't breaking any law in his contry by doing so.
On the other hand, it's pretty stupid to download scans from tokyopop or viz or whatever, when you live in the US and can buy them. First of all, it's 100% illegal and you have absolutly no excuse this time arround. And isn't it way better to read from a book laying on the bed than reading it from the computer screen for hours and getting the carpal tunnel syndrome because of it?
Well as I already said, I've been through both situations, so no, I'm not against people that do it... I'm more against people who can buy the licensed stuff but don't.

Well there are some. But there aren't these Manga I read. I got some German Mangas (Record of Lodoss War for example) but there's only one big publisher which is selling Mangas in Germany that I know of.[Carlsen Comics] Maybe you could help me out there. But I doubt any of the Mangas which are presented in Germany are the ones I want to get at the moment.
So I still think, there's no evil to download Mangas which I won't be able to buy otherwise and which aren't licensed here or which I cannot afford to import.

100% agree. That's exactly the way I'm thinking.
