Man I SO disagree with you guys. The best metal comes from the American South(Red, White and Blue FTW).

Umm...can you give me a few suggestions for South American rock? I only remember Sepultura and I'm too lazy to dig out some band names only to find the ones that suck most. So then I can really say whether Nothern Europe metal is better or not ^_^.

@Digital-Eon: I <3 almost every band of your list, except for X-Japan (whom I don't really like, but I still respect them) and Leaves' Eyes (..never heard of them >.<)...I'm pretty sure LP isn't metal but if you say so..smile

i think he ment the southern part of the usa, since he said red white and blue, and i thought Sepultura was from brazil...

but yea, i would like to know, as well...

There are a few good metal bands from the american south, but i think the best metal comes from all over the world, since it takes a mix of everything to get it just right.

Dammit, I thought Red, white and blue was a band and started googling it when I saw it actually referred to America -___-'''

Well yeah, the best metal comes from all over the world, I just have a slight preference towards the Northern European bands, because technically the genre is still the same, right?

Yes yes, the genre is still the same. A major number of my favourite metal bands comes from Northern Europe. Northern Europe, especially Norway Finland and Sweden those countries have very good metal bands. mad So I prefer European, but South American isn't that bad at all.
Suggestions for South American metal you should ask ahoaho. I think he knows the best. eyes

X-Japan definitely isn't my favourite, but they're not bad. Not as listened to on my iPod as other things, though. ^_^

Leaves' Eyes is... not that famous. I was introduced to them when they were opening (or whatever that is?) at a Kamelot concert, and... well, liked them. ^_^

Linkin Park is nu metal~ Their first two albums were, anyway. Not sure what's with Minutes to Midnight, though.

Metal wise I listen to Stratovarius (Finnish), DragonForce (English) and Blind Guardian (German), but they all sing in English regardless of where they're from, lol. laugh

Stratovarius: Power/Progressive Metal
DragonForce: Speed Metal
Blind Guardian: Power/Progressive Metal (I think)
(As if I actually under what power and progressive metal actually mean, lol)

Songs by the artists that I like are: Eagleheart (Stratovarius), Destiny (Stratovarius), Black Diamond (Stratovarius), Through the Fire and the Flames (DragonForce, who hasn't heard that one recently, lol), Soldiers of the Wasteland (DragonForce), Mirror Mirror (Blind Guardian), The Bard's Song (Blind Guardian).

I also listen to a little Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Night Wish.

Power metal is taking over the world eyes (So many BG and NW fans XD)
I guess it's because many of us are also RPG fans and power metal goes along with that (atleast it's that way with me...Morrowind and Dragonforce make an excellent combo ^_^)

@ahoaho: Nope I read it wrong...I had no idea what was red, white and blue all about <_<...I'll check some out tommorrow

Yeah, I guess the reason that I don't listen to Power Metal is because I'm not a gamer...

OK, maybe I should start out with being a dick, and post the positive stuff later.

Linkin Park is not metal. Neither are Slipknot or Korn, or any "rap metal" band. As most of you are aware, these bands are called "nu metal". This is a very misleading name, as these bands are technically speaking not metal. I'm not expressing a dislike towards these bands (though I don't like them, personally), I'm just stating the facts. Nu metal is a genre, or rather a group of styles, that incorporates different musical styles like metal, punk and rap in their music. While it definitely takes some elements from metal, and may sound very similar to metal for those who aren't familiar with the genre, they can't technically be called metal.

I agree that Power metal, much like folk metal, can be very geeky at times, but I still like it very much. Not all bands are all about dragons and epic battles. Some of the less geeky bands include Sonata Arctica and Helloween. The genre still seems to be the odd one out, mainly because the lyrics are usually different from the classic metal themes and tend to be more about mainstream themes (not derogatory) like romance (but not in a perverted/obscene way like for example black metal bands).

So the positive stuff.

Most of the stuff I listen comes from Northern Europe. I believe that the metal scene there has been the most innovative for the last 20 years, giving birth to different genres like black, power and folk metal, as well as giving many melodic subgenres of already existing genres there final form. (like melodic death, which was greatly influenced by bands like Death and Carcass, but was made popular by more recent bands like Arch Enemy, In Flames and the likes.) Of course other countries bring great bands too, but the Scandinavian metal scene is one of the biggest. (and best imo)

Bands I like: (not nearly a complete list)

Heavy metal:

Judas Priest
Sinergy
Iron maiden (I'm not gonna make a separate section for NWOBHM)

Trash metal:

Don't like it

Death metal:

Death
Morbid Angel
Nile

Melodeath:

Arch enemy
Carcass
Norther
Amon Amarth

Black/symphonic black metal:

Satyricon
Emperor
Carpathian Forest
Graveworm
Opera IX
Theatres Des Vampires
Behemoth (blackened death metal)
Cadaveria
Astarte
... (lots of different bands I've heard of, but mentioning them here would take too much time)

(melodic) Power metal:

Kamelot (They rule.)
Sonata Arctica
Epinikion (doubt you've heard of them)
I used to listen to Nightwish a lot, but they've really gone downhill lately.

Symphonic metal:

Haggard (check these guys out! Google 'the final victory')
Visions of Atlantis
Apocalyptica
Not a big fan of the genre, though the above three, especially Haggard, are good.

Doom/goth metal:

Tristania
Sirenia
Theatre of Tragedy
Leaves' Eyes
The Sins of thy Beloved
Moonspell
Sentenced
Tiamat
Paradise Lost
Type O Negative
Erben der Schöpfung/Elis (same band that changed it's name)
My Dying Bride
... (lots and lots of other bands)

Avant-garde metal:

Ram-Zet

Progressive metal:

Symphony X

Folk metal:

Ensiferum
Fintroll
Elvenking
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter
Wintersun

Industrial metal:

Samael
Deathstars

I was actually waiting for a metal head to pop up. I think that the way that many metal heads look at metal as a genre is very narrow minded. To say that 'nu metal' is a blending of styles is true, but many 'true metal' genres blend other styles as well. Melodic Death, Melodic Black, Power Metal, and Avant Garde bands blend heavy doses of Classical music in their work. Folk Metal blends folk music. Many industrial bands blend electronica into their music. Thrash in an amalgam of Hardcore and NWOBHM. And if you want to take it further, Doom and Goth metal are not very similar at all.

This is the main thing that perturbs me about metal in general. Bands like KSE or Soulfy get marked as Metalcore. Metal is the only scene that is divisive like that. You don't see the Hardcore scene saying Bad Brains is not Hardcore because they have ska influences. You don't see the Blues scene say that John Mayer isn't blues because he made several pop records.

Metal is the only genre that is so divisive like this, it's sad.
