or did this manga become really crappy in the last few chapters... random fighting and battles going on everywhere, couldn't care less about any of it.

I don't know what are you talking about, since to me the story is still very good, but maybe you feel that way because you've reached the latest chapter and you have to wait an entire month for every new release, maybe? well, that's just my opinion anyway
