Haven't been using IRC for a while now since I haven't been into manga lately to DL from #lurk

can someone explain what irc is?

You know, using google yourself to search for these things would be easier and go a lot faster than waiting for someone to answer in a forum thread.

thanx for the smartass answer. i just figured since you have a whole topic dedicated to it, and in the poll 20% of people don't know what it is, that i could ask that simple question.

I use it for chatting all the time. Used it for downloading a long time ago but I have since switched to other methods.

As for what it is, IRC is short for "Internet Relay Chat" Wikipedia says it is:

Quote from wikipedia
a protocol for real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfer, including file sharing.

As sosseres says,

Quote from sosseres
some streaming sites use it for the chats. It is still one of the most popular chat platforms when you want large channels.

It is mainly considered complicated because you have to find the server and channel you want to go to as well as find an application for it. Navigating these requires some basic commands. That really is more daunting than actually difficult though. Recently, however, a lot of people (including myself) have been using webchat apps which you can just open in the browser. Just plug in the name of the channel you want to go to and it is pretty simple (That only works for chatting though. The more complex functions such as dling require certain IRC based applications and knowledge of a couple more commands)

I hope you try it out KaoriNite

I'm relatively new to IRC considering its age, but ever since I started using it I haven't stopped, and I don't plan to anytime soon. As long as I'm at a computer, I am on IRC. I can't keep myself interested enough to use forums much anymore, and I've never really been a heavy user of chat programs, but for some reason IRC works for me. I probably lurk a lot more than I actually chat, and I don't even use it to download all that much (except for specific things), but I don't foresee myself ever quitting for good.

I think I used it to download something like two times. I found it really hard to learn...

I was introduced to it for downloading purposes...

Which then turned into chatting away with people on the channel (usually lurkers/fanboys/fangirls and scanlating staff)... it was really fun for a time... but most of the people that I chatted with are on the other side of the world... and now my sleep schedule has changed, so it's been so long since I've used it. sad

So my short-lived usage of IRC lasted for a total of probably a month...

It is my preferred way of downloading scanlations. Rarely used it for chat.

I've thought about it, and it depends... Does it count if the sole purpose of me using it was to idle and not do anything with it besides sign on? If so then yes, otherwise no....

And to be honest I've even stopped that for lack of internet. >.<;

I still do all the time, but not as much as a few years ago. Mainly I use it to chat with some buddies of mine from a couple other sites.

I also use IRC to download stuff, but I haven't done so in quite some time. I can agree with all the people here saying that it's a really discreet and secure way of downloading stuff, it really is. But, I really prefer downloading my stuff via DDL or torrents if given the choice, unless if the offered download is some sort of group / community exclusive, only available on IRC .

I'm just discovering it, and I'm not getting used to it 'cause I don't find any reason to be often on it (more then enough ddls available, so it's just a question to find a room with nice ppl to chat with I guess?)

I'm curious about what scanlation teams staff members think of this... (and I don't mean my reply, I mean the poll and the results) roll eyes
