WTF? why did nobody mention Akira?

Probably it's just too good and obvious to be mentioned.

And I'd like to mention NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind as another absolute classic.

Crying Freeman (OK story, great art)
Video Girl Ai
Planetes
Nausicaa

Unfortunately, a lot of what Japanese manga readers my age would recommend as classics haven't been translated... Certainly most of Osamu Tezuka's work qualifies, as does most of Leiji Matsumoto's.

Piece of Cake and Extra Heavy Syrup seem too girly even if they are josei as the recommendations this guy wanted were shounen ones. Also, they don't fall under "classics" yet in my opinion. They aren't even half a decade old.

Then maybe you can see if your local library has it. But IRC is free just like BT programs. Otherwise, I guess you can go without. I wonder how you're getting the other manga though. From the bookstore?

That'd make a nice laugh... i live in Portugal where american comics are underground stuff and manga is completely unknown so my only chance is to get'em online ( mostly through direct download)

MangaTraders.com has it. This is steadily getting less and less sneaky.

ok... jus to clarify some people... they don't have to be necessarily unpopular and about the age part... anything before 2000's fine... i'm not picky... still NO mecha please... love to ya all

That was the reason i recommended those. It's just a variety of titles.

edit: senile_seinen is right though, most old good titles are not being scanlated and some of them are even hard to find in Japanese.

Btw being lazy narrows your choices ^__^;
