I started reading this series a while back and never finished it... It has a boy who is the next head of the family and he has incredible power [he gets rid of evil spirits or something]. His childhood friend lives him and is his girlfriend. I remember the CHF disappears and turns evil or something and one of the bad guys turns good after [or before] turning from a guy to a girl and falling for the Main Guy.

Nope, sorry that's not it. I remember the family found the chidlhood friend when she was young and abandoned. They raised her as a companion for the future head.... or something like that.
