There are also guys that say that they'd rather be staring at a woman's backside for x hundred hours on end then a man's.

If they're upfront about it, it doesn't really matter. It's like a tall person playing as a gnome. If they're not, then they might be trying to exploit people.

Edit: If you're not just talking about Online play, I sometimes choose female characters to look for slight gameplay and plot differences between the two genders, or see the romances for female characters. (Although I only do that if I like their romantic interests.

Well, I'm a girl and I often play male characters. Not always though. If I'm choosing from more or less pre-made characters, I choose the one I thinks looks best. If I'm making my own, I usually make a whole bunch of both genders...

I play fighting games. Very expirenced at them. Maybe play them too much. I can tell you its about style in short. Every single good fighting game makes each charactor unique.
They make sure each has a unique style and rythem.
After playing long enough fighters are just representations of the style.
Gender is only a part of the look and in some cases feel.

EDIT: Im talking about games like street fighter, soulcalibur, mortal kombat, tekken, dead or alive and whatnot.
I hope thats what you mean?

^same here

I love to play fighting games, they are my bread and butter.

there is nothing wrong playing female chars, my main in SF3rd strike is Chun Li mainly due to her superior poking game, kara throw, and bit overpowered cr.mk->saII

and my main in Tekken is always nina, love her fast paced mix up.

If there're no benefits/different skills?

From my experience...
They usually like female chars' looks better.
Other times they get other people's accounts with female characters.

I got blindsided once... All the romantic feelings I had were gone as soon as he'd told me he was in fact a married guy (rather than a married woman), playing with his wife's abandoned account.
You'd think I wouldn't mind, being bisexual, but it was quite a blow. o_O

I really don't care about all this gender bending,
I'd just like to know beforehand who's the target of my flirtation. ~_~

Argh! In game romance is just a pain in the ass...

well personaly i think its because when they are online they can act like someone completely different and act out of their own imagination to an extent where as in the real world things just arnt that simple. none

actually i meant i understand that female chars in fighting games are different and depending on the style may suit a male gamer better than a male char
