I've been reading manga for a long time now and whilst I find it very easy to find stuff that I'll enjoy in the fantasy genre I never seem to have much luck with sci-fi.
At the moment I'm mostly interested in a story that traverses worlds, preferably with an interesting mix of aliens encountered (ideally not all of which are enemies). I can't think of any manga/anime examples that really cover what I'm looking for, but if it helps I've been playing a lot of Mass Effect lately, so if there's a manga anything remotely like that I'd be interested in hearing about it
I'm not sure how big of an ask this is considering that I'm asking for a sci-fi set in space, but if it's at all possible, I'd like something that doesn't have too much in the way of mecha. I don't particularly hate mecha though, so if you feel that your suggestion satisfies all my other criteria then please feel free to voice it anyway
That said, I'm really not keen on hardcore horror or gratuitous amounts of gore, so please don't suggest anything like that.

Seikai Trilogy I also recommend the anime (the second series is kinda of mecha-centered but the first is exceptional).
For sci-fi I usually found more stuff in anime than manga...

Cowboy Bebop (not much on the aliens though.)
The anime is truly epic too. =)

Wow, thanks so much for your quick responses everyone! I've already seen/read a couple of your suggestions (currently reading Planetes & Gintama, seen almost all of Cowboy Beebop), all of which I've thoroughly enjoyed, so I will be sure to check out the other stuff that you've suggested to me
Would it be alright to ask for anime suggestions as well then, or is this section strictly for manga only? Sorry for the noobish question, I've been a member for ages but I've never really posted on the forums until now so I don't really know what's what here

Starship operators - anime and manga (not scanlated), Legend of the Galactic Heroes - anime, Outlaw star - anime, To Terra - anime and manga, Space Pirate Captain Harlock - anime and all series in this world, Xenosaga - anime, Geneshaft - anime, although it have mecha it is awesome, Lost Universe - anime, Tenchi Muyo! GPX - anime and all Tenchi series but I recommend this one because the action is mainly in the space unlike the other series, there also several quite good mangas, Uchuu no Stellvia - anime, it have very little mecha at the end, Infinite Ryvius anime and manga( sadly not scanlated, again), Divergence Eve S 1&2 anime,Irresponsible Captain Tylor - anime, Space Battleship Yamato - anime, I hope I have been helpful.

Outlanders - entertaining space opera fluff, complete with scantily clad alien princess
Also check out the Irresponsible Captain Tylor anime.
