Kinda disappointing too, I didn't much like FFIX...but who knows, maybe they'll improve it...
Yeah.... It used to be called Rapture. The only real surpise is that it's going to be released next year... the same time as XIII

Meh... After XI's "succes", I'm not really sure why they would make the same move... nonetheless with the more or less, same characters! o__O
At least, make it side game of the FF
franchise, not an actual main game.

iirc FFXI is the second most popular mmo in the world, and main source of SE income so i don't really get what you wanted to say

Before you make claims of whether or not FFXI is popular or not, perhaps you should reference it with some form of data. Where did you hear that FFXI was not popular, where did you hear that it was or that it is SE's main source of income?
When i hear mmorpg, at least the pay to play kind, first thing i think about is WoW. Second is age of conan that ended up being a big flop. Even just a general google search on top mmorpgs, and FFXI is either mentioned in 4th or lower, or isn't even mentioned at all (especially in recent mmorpg lists such as the 2009 top ten). I agree that FFXI may have been popular and second best when it came out, but that popularity was definitely shadowed by WoW, and fails to compete against some of the new mmorpgs, free and pay2play.
It seems that in the recent years SE has been making some strange calls, from a sequel game (FFX-2), movies (Spirits within and Advent children) and now mmorpgs (FFXI and soon to be FFXIV) but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sequels of games simply shouldn't exist for the FF series since each one is usually an original fantasy of its own, but as for the movie (Spirits within and Advent Children), the first movie ended up being a big disappointment for many fans (a lot thought it would be a continuation of 7 not a story of its own), but SE made up for it with the second movie. Now, SE released FFXI (which in my opinion isn't that great and was dwarfed by WoW), but with the release of FFXIV, it may actually be a good game. What i've seen with SE games is that they try to improve on previous gameplays to make something original, which either ends up being a success, or a big flop, but when it is a big flop, they try to improve it and normally succeed. So even if FFXI was a flop (which apparently some people argue otherwise), since they've already released an mmo title and have some experience in the field, i hope to see huge improvements and innovative ideas implemented in FFXIV

Well, I live in Belgium, and I can guarantee that there aren't even ten people who own the game (exaggeration, hurr durr), so yeah it isn't really a succes here.
You're right though, it's really popular in North America and Japan, but I don't notice any of that popularity. Does it even have a monthly fee?
And what Vudoodude says, rings true as well. Square-Enix has more experience with MMORPGs now.
But the thing is I don't like MMORPGs, since you have to monthly pay for them, right? .____. If so, that sucks.

well, i live in poland. FFXI isnt very popular here as well but there are like 200 players (at least i know of that many) and in my LS (guild in FFXI) there was someone form belgium
also monthly fees arent really that high, and difference between free and paid mmorpgs are enormous.
I just hope FFXIV won't be as huge time sinker as FFXI which was the biggest problem. WoW is a game for causual players: easy, fast and simple while FFXI is for the most hardcore gamers out there, you need to play at least for 4-5 hrs a day to make any noticable progress and difficulty of gameplay is far beyond other MMORPGs
btw. SE stated that 14 ISN'T sequel, its a brand new game just with races from XI

I will solve the issue about it being popular or not with one question.
Does it have pirated versions?
