The main character of this manga is a young boy who I believe is looking for his father/grandfather. As typical of shounen the main character is a strong fighter. Some other details I can remember is that at one point he visits a friend of his father/grandfather who is a vampire. Also part of the stories premise has to do with a battle between heaven and hell. I believe that they are both interested in the boy due to his father/grandfather being one of the strongest magicians alive.

Sorry about the details being so weak. I read parts of this long ago, and it has just popped in to my mind recently. Also I read the manga in a Borders which means that the story was licensed. Don't know how much that helps.

That sounded exactly like Negima! until the last part about heaven and hell.

Yeah it does sound similar to negima but I know that is not it. This one had a much darker undertone to.
