...a bento can be composed of any number of those items (in theory, at least, the soup-based dishes would be rather unusual). Really should've been left off.

You definitely should have. ;p
But apart from sushi and sashimi, I don't think I've tried anything else.
They don't really offer a big variety of Japanese foods in most restaurants here.
It's usually an Asian mix.
Anyways, I love sushi, so I guess I'll vote for that.

I was torn between sushi, ramen and tempura, but in the end I just went for what I eat the most out of the three, and that's sushi.

I love a good sukiyaki. There's nothing like a hot broth of sliced beef and vegetables on a cold wintery day or night. Often times I fall back to shio ramen, curry anything, and okonomiyaki. They are my comfort foods. At my regular izakaya, the chicken meatball yakitori is very addictive. I'm really particular about the freshness and variety of fish for my sushi but when in season, I love mackerel sashimi with scallions.

I picked sushi! Or as my mom's friend calls it, suzhi!
I feel rich when I eat it. Riiiiiiiiiich! `Cause lots of the sushi restaurants I go to are so faaancy and expeeensive! But worth the $moolah$! I feel like I can indulge myself in the delicacy of sushi more than ramen! When I eat ramen, it usually happens when I am in my dorm room, all arone... Sooooo it is much better eating sushi! Plus, I don't get to eat sushi that much, so when I do, it's allllllllways le lovely!

Le edit:
I also LOVE le ice cream mochi!!!!

Not just that...nabe and ramen is not exclusive to Japanese cuisine. Sure it has a Japanese name but that's because it's in Japanese. There's Korean and Chinese equivalent and the only thing unique about the Japanese version is their ingredients and preparation.(From what i've seen from my visits to Korea and Japan, they prepare nabe the same way. And about Chinese stuff...I'm Chinese.)
They should have added the most popular Japanese food next to Sushi and Onigiri...Takoyaki.

My favourites are not listed...
1. Dorayaki
2. Takoyaki
Since they're not there I choose sushi (which is 3rd). The other are chawan-mushi and miso. Cold ramen is good too (the one with green, I forgot its name). I like onigiri too, eat it for breakfast if doesn't have time to cook. Good thing there's store for Japanese food in my country
...And now I'm hungry
