Hello, like the topic says, I am in the midst of a big choice regarding my life/career affecting the next few years of my life (reasonably) and am driving myself insane about what to do.
In a nut shell:
I can stay at my current position with a company called Pepsi loading trucks well into the night. It's physically intense, like working out hard all day, has relaxed atmosphere, all my friends are there, free pop, but has no mental challenge/reward and does not excite me, doing the "same thing" from when I start to the end of the day 10 hours later. Potential to move up the ranks but I don't know if I could suck it up and grind for years to get somewhere better.
Or I could work for my local newspaper selling ad space at regular business hours. Working with customers/clients, doing office stuff and venturing out into the world and dealing with challenges, getting results, taking on projects, independent stuff, with growth potential as well. "Something new everyday" is what I'm told.
Now, I have made pro/con lists, tried talking to friends, family etc. but I waffle and am not the best at deciding what's best for myself. So just wondering what the manga loving internets has to say,

sorry to disappoint you, but that isn't really a place for anyone of us to say anything. We don't know you and if even you don't know what to do, how can you expect any of us to judge you or your life and decide for you...
Even if someone says something to you it would most probably be their own decision, but why should any other one's decision be the right one for you?
Decide and live with the outcome. Include friends and family in your decision, to be precise people who know about you, but even then, it's your own choice.
What this looks like is less searching for opinions and more shifting resposibility.
That won't be good for us, and neither will it be for you.
Do what you like and take your chances. In the end you have to be the one that has to be happy right?

I agree here that it really is your decision and how you plan your future. You must ultimately decide this yourself and not use our suggestions as your point of guidance.
But if I would drop in a suggestion, the newspaper job has more potential to take you further up the corporate ladder and will probably bring in more money in the long run. With the Pepsi job, you have a higher chance and risk for back injuries.

Potential to move up the ranks but
Meh. Unlikely. It's not exactly something that's going to look great on a job resume...
Hmm. How old are you? If you're like really young, then the loading job is possible. Otherwise, it's really a better idea to go for the job that teaches you new skills and builds up your job marketability... The newspaper job sounds like a stepping stone on the way to building your career...

Very true, it does sound like shifting responsibility. Maybe on par with people posting videos on youtube asking if they are pretty. In the end only you can only hold yourself accountable, fuck everyone else. I probably have already made the decision but just needed to vent and and hear something I haven't said to myself already, lol

Agree with most of the posters, but the newspaper job might do u good in my opinion if it gives you opportunity in life, instead of staying with pepsi doing the same tedious job every day.

I worked for UPS for years doing pretty much the same you are doing, without the free pop. I quit because it drove me nuts, such ultra tedious work. I didn't work as long of hours as you did, but I know how boring it is to do the same thing every day, at the same time, every time. So I went back to school, and looked for more interesting jobs. But let me warn you this, make sure that if the newspaper thing doesn't support you as well in the long run, make sure you have a back up plan. I can go back to UPS anytime I want and get my pay back.
But seriously, better to not work at all, then to be miserable where you work.

I quit a job at an Investment Banker to become a writer. You can probably guess what my answer will be.
Another thing you should keep in mind, is that the newspaper job will also look much better on every job application that doesn't involve loading cargo.
P.S. Free soda-pop is a con for your waistline.

Very interesting to hear what all y'all have to say, thanks.
Although most have that hint of do what makes you happy.
Repetition sucks, and if I could I would quite and work on my art, something I think i'm passionate about. Or I would love to go back to school, a masters or phD would feel great. But I needs money to further my short and mid term goals.
It was kinda funny, having strong beliefs about soda/pop playing a big part in America's obesity/diabetes epidemic yet working to deliver it to consumers en masse. But that's why I work out and jog, it make the compromise taste less bitter.
Oh, and winning the lottery is still my back-up plan

Wow, you just put into words what was on my mind. Just... Much better than I would have been able to.
I hope this doesn't count as spam, I just wanted to say I completely agree with you. So, creator of the topic, listen to this man!

Have you heard of the book of changes I ching? You can use it like a source of a different POV, a complement for that pro/con list. You can also consult it online for free, is very fast an easy. If you decide to give it a try check also the original text (it will give you the option in the hexagram page), I like it more. Here the url http://www.ichingonline.net/index.php . I hope you are happy with whichever path you choose in the end. Good luck.

At OP
Personally I would go for the newspaper as it would give you more job options in the future.
As said above if you do, be sure you have the option to go back and work for the cargo company if the newspaper doesn't support you enough
