well i am a girl so a really dont know but in manga my favorite female characters are usually Tsunderes
why?
Because they provide humor (usually) and the relationships arent just flat romance--there is some depth into it--not just love at first sight or anything really but gradual romance that takes it for who the person is

also Rei isn't a real clone,the DNA was just somehow used but it's not exactly a clone,she doesn't even look like Shinjis mother!
I've read an interesting text about Shinji and Asuka yesterday.It was said there that when Asuka is using her female side his hormons go crazy(he's 14,of course they will!)but every other time he wants to be far far away from her.

also some hints of ShinjiXMisato in the manga are bigger than in the anime(like when he quits being a pilot,I believe it was episode 2 or 3(?))

first i hated the manga xD and b/c it left out asuka mostly *stabs manga books*
it kept misato &rei (did the mangaka hate asuka or something

I've only read seven volumes of the manga, so please don't attack me for lack of knowledge, etc. >.< (I'm deciding whether or not to start watching the anime though...)
I prefer ShinjixRei. Asuka is...irritating, extremely irritating at parts. I feel like I'm just waiting for her to screw up and make me hate her I don't really understand why there are people who like her. From the moment she was introduced I didn't like her 
Although I will admit she's a bit more mature than those who have the same stereotype personality as her.
There's something about Rei I like. Not sure what it is though

well, if you get the jist of the series, and look into shinjis character a bit more, you will see that asukas better. Shinji isnt meant to be with rei cuz he cant be totally happy cuz of his psyco character and asuka is in a way a psyco too. they have more in common than rei + shinji will ever have. Also, in the manga, shinji says that rei was a part of him that he abandoned years ago. Through my inference, shinji is more unlike and like asuka in the present. Also, shinji understands asuka more than most and knows that she is unsecure like he is>> both have a parent complex (xD) >> her psychotic nature comes from her past >> shinjis insecure/unstable nature comes from his past>> so that means that rei is the part he doesnt want to go back to. First of all, NGE isn't meant for romance. It's just a sorry tale filled with depression. The story wasn't meant to have a happy ending. Every character had a problem which made reading it feel like a visit to the madhouse.
And who likes Shinji anyway? Such a pathetic excuse for a character. He's not 'getting' with anyone.
As for the topic, I'd say Rei and Shinji. Asuka was extremely irritating, and the only thing that was appealing about her may be her looks.
Anyway, thats my opinion.

Why are you still deciding whether or not start watching a series that was awarded in the 10th anniversary of the Japanese Media Arts Festival as the best anime of all time (According to 80,000 Japanese Fans at least), and who is as well considered by many critics as one of The Four Revolutions of Anime? Really, I can't even imagine what's stopping you from watching it.
And by the way, you shouldn't even be reading this topic since it's full of spoilers, and personally I highly recommend you read the manga after you've watched the anime (TV series + movie) because otherwise the overall enjoyment that you'll experience when watching the series will decrease incrediblely.
And about the thread topic, I don't even want to comment about it. It makes me remember those commentaries about the hapless-like state in which most of the discussions about Eva are centralizated by much of the "typical" Western audience, and how their attention is only directed to the superficial aspects and elements of the series, being unable of even try to be interested in having an opinion fundamented on a critical and methodical approach. I thought that (in general) the English-speaking public was different, but for what I see, I was terribly wrong.

Shinji and Kaworu of course. Sorta, not couple couple, but like BFF. Cause he's just like Rei but more outgoing, he's like a blend of Rei and Asuka without the super anger, super cluelessness, and angst.
