By the way, if you guys remember that tsunami that hit the Indian Ocean back in 2004 the magnitude of the Japan earthquake is similar this. Back in 2004 the magnitude of that earthquake was so huge that it tilted the earth's axis by a few degrees. I dont know if you guys remember but this caused abnormal season changes throughout the world. This Japan earthquake may also cause the earth tilt again by a few degrees. Therefore, you may be expecting weird weather in the future.

About the Earth's axis tilting a few degrees that is inaccurate from what I've learned Astronomy class, it did tilt but not by a whole much, I'll have to get back to you on that.

Some people in this thread are clearly disgusting otakus. There are some things that are a bit more important than your anime and manga.

People can't be that disgusting... can they? I just peg them as being trolls...

Usually trolls expect a reaction. Some of the responses here seem to imply the poster didn't realize how what they were saying would be taken.

So, I guess people can be. What a shame.

People can be anything. There's no limit to how disgusting human beings can be. Including me.

Thankfully, I'm in tune with the world enough to feel empathy for those undergoing this kind of tragedy. At any rate, my heart goes out to the people going through this.

Argh. Quite apart from the images being very scary, it's probably going to hit world economy in some way.

No matter how bad it is, I guess it won't be as bad as Banda Aceh's, Japan has pretty good infrastructure anyway.

Is that why my internet is so slow today?

I heard about this at another site I go to and I saw some of the pictures as well. I hope everybody's okay over there...

And if anybody's interested, go check out some eyewitness footage of the earthquake over on YouTube. It's surreal...

It appears that there are more 130 something bodies confirmed, despite the 300 found near the beach, but i bet many people are in the middle of the debris, and there is still the matter of people who were in ships and the missing train. Still i think that while the number will eventually rise, if it stays low it's almost a miracle considering the footage we see from Sendai. What a tragedy...
Prepared as they could be from the quake i guess there is no way you can prepare for a tsunami and the damage it made.
What they need to do now is put down the fires and control the nuclear plant to avoid further tragedies, then start going though the debris to see if they can save anybody.

why is everybody so upset about people hoping that the authors of the mangas they like are safe? about 300 people died and 500 more are missing. this is sad but there is nothing that we can do about it. why is it wrong to hope that people that the 800 people were made up of people that none of us have ever herd of instead of people who write things that interest us. i will say it plainly, I am sad that all those people died and hope aid comes soon to the survivor but i also hope that no mangakas who write things i read were killed.

This is very saddening and depressing. I hope that the Japanese people will get through this as safe and swiftly as humanly possible. I heard about this when I first woke up this morning, watching the news. I was shocked and flabbergasted that it was a 8.9 ... Probably the strongest quake I remember in my lifetime. I'm really concerned about the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, I really hope and pray it's under control atm. I'm hoping and praying for the best possible recovery and outcome for the Japanese people.

It wasn't because of what they typed, it was the way that they typed it. It made them sound like they didn't care about anything else other than their favorite manga or anime finishing. I know they didn't really mean it like that, but like I said, it was the way that they typed it.

Actually, it better not be like haiti....

It's good that Japan has a good infrastructure. If that happened on the West Coast, all houses would collapse like dominoes.

Is that a reference how ineffective any monetary donation was? I doubt that the same amount of help Haiti received will reach Japan. People pity the Third World and Japan still has on of the stronger economies; people will feel less inclined for monetary donations... There will still be aid foundations and other resources (there's an article on the Time website talking about how people can help.). There was a statement released from the USA promising aid... er... expressing condolences.

@hubris: yeah and Japan is more prepared to this type of disaster.

Looking at youtube vids of workers in Tokyo...it all looks like a stroll in the park wink
