New Poll - Best Shoujo
If you haven't noticed, this IS a popularity contest.

This here is poll number 2 of our series of "Best" polls! This time around, we got shoujo! Thank you to the 150 people who gave shoujo series suggestions that deserve to be named the best. And curse those people whose posts that I deleted because they didn't follow my rules. Again, if your favorite series isn't up there, sucks for you. You may think it's the best, but not everyone else thinks the same way. Also again, this poll is not up for discussion on our forums. By the way, some great titles that didn't make the top 5 were suggested, so if you're an avid shoujo reader, I really do recommend you check out the other series in this thread:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=13775

As an interesting side note, I only haven't read Mars. And I know which series will win without even doing this poll...
I would also like to thank the many people who for the first time made a post on our forums just to make some suggestions~

In case you were wondering, the five runner-ups are as follows (in this order):
Hana Yori Dango
Koukou Debut
Basara
Beast Master
Cat Street
If you're wondering how a particular series did, just PM me.

For the next poll, we're doing seinen series. Make your suggestions here:
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=13890

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Best Shounen
Choices:
One Piece - votes: 4138 (28.5%)
Fullmetal Alchemist - votes: 3455 (23.8%)
Death Note - votes: 2917 (20.1%)
Great Teacher Onizuka - votes: 2180 (15%)
Claymore - votes: 1812 (12.5%)
There were 14502 total votes.
The poll ended: September 5th 2009

And we got a winner! One Piece it is! Notice that Naruto and Bleach aren't up there...
As an interesting side note (again), Claymore is the highest rated series out of all those choices, yet it didn't garner as many votes

So many overrated shoujo titles up there.
Hana Kimi was a bore.
Ouran was a bore.
Furuba was a bore.
Mars is a great shoujo manga on the other hand.
But my love for Skip Beat knows no ends.
(And yeah, I can predict the winner too.)

» PansyWansyLinsy on September 5th, 2009, 11:38am

No NANA? Hana Yori Dango? I like most of those titles in the poll, but there's a huge gaping hole if you forget those two. HYD is one of the best selling shoujo of all time followed by NANA.

thread

» cl123 on September 5th, 2009, 11:44am

I completely agree! Basara and HYD, IMO, are the best ever! However, I'm glad at least Skip Beat and Mars are on the poll (the rest of the titles ARE overrated).

thread

» Dubby on September 5th, 2009, 10:28pm

Nana is josei, is it not? : S

thread

» StarlightDreams on September 6th, 2009, 7:31am

Nana is serialized in a shoujo magazine, so it's classified as shoujo on this site.

thread

» Tananda on September 6th, 2009, 12:11am

I can't believe my eyes! Why Mars in 5th place? It's such a great manga! Though I have nothing against Skip beat being the best (I hope mangaka will see it through till the end on the same level...) but Ouran is only fairly fun and nothing more.

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 6th, 2009, 3:32pm

in your opinion bigrazz I can understand why you'd think those titles are boring though. >_____>

XD
All the same I love Furuba and HK is good as well, Ouran stopped interesting me though sad My love for Skip Beat knows no ends either ;D

thread

» NightSwan on September 5th, 2009, 11:40am

Mars for me.

Sadly underrated~ *sigh*

thread

» blakraven66 on September 5th, 2009, 11:48am

Same here...

thread

» BaeSooky on September 5th, 2009, 7:00pm

Same. T~T

The other four are so overrated. It already looks like Skip Beat will win, guess this is a sign that I should actually pick it up. >__< I honestly don't understand how Hana Kimi made it up there, the rest I can see...but it beating HYD? (which I didn't even vote for) I wonder if there was a tie....O_O

On another note...yay for OP~ XD

thread

» CookieQueen on September 7th, 2009, 5:43pm

Although I agree Mars was good, how do you know if Skip Beat is overrated if you haven't even read it? Prejudiced much... >_>

I'm with every other Skip Beat fanatic, it truly won my heart for having an awesome heroine!

thread

» BaeSooky on September 7th, 2009, 7:49pm

Erm, I dropped it. <__>

I would actually want to see how many people would still vote for it once it's finish. The ending might or might not be good, who knows. >.>

thread

» amaranthine on September 5th, 2009, 11:50am

Using the process of elimination, Skip Beat...

But yay, OP won! XD

thread

» makoz on September 5th, 2009, 12:03pm

fruits basket will win though I don't like it that much.

thread

» b1ue_wishes on September 5th, 2009, 12:17pm

i like Skip Beat the most out of the given five but Saver is even better!

thread

» xkat on September 5th, 2009, 12:31pm

-gasp-

No Hana Yori Dango? D: <3

Fine~ then I will choose my second favorite~ ; o;

thread

» ArtsEnticingOrdeal on September 5th, 2009, 12:42pm

As expected, these polls aren't an indicator of "best", really.

Only of "most popular".

thread

» kana503 on September 5th, 2009, 4:57pm

But...this IS a popularity contest. lambchopsil said it himself.

thread

» ArtsEnticingOrdeal on September 6th, 2009, 1:49am

True. But I think it's funny. xDD

thread

» nightcrawler103 on September 5th, 2009, 1:19pm

Well, "best" is very subjective. What you considered as "overrated" is what others considered as "best". It's just that the majority has similar opinion.

thread

» vietangelix on September 5th, 2009, 1:23pm

The only manga I haven't read on the poll is Mars too,
Gotta check that out '-'

thread

» riney25 on September 5th, 2009, 6:24pm

The only manga I read (in one sitting I might add) and completed is Mars. Skip Beat is one I follow, though my vote does belong to Mars.

thread

» bunny_tsukino on September 5th, 2009, 2:12pm

What? No sailor moon? Sadness! Koukou Debut would have been my second pick bigrazz

thread

» xkat on September 5th, 2009, 3:42pm

I know! D:

Sailor Moon, Koukou Debut, and Hana Yori Dango would've been my choice ; o;

I had a split decision between Fruits Basket and Mars x-x;;

thread

» Lightning Hiro on September 5th, 2009, 2:59pm

A difficult choice for me, I voted for Fruits Basket in the end, but Skip Beat is haunting me.

thread

» E-chan52 on September 5th, 2009, 6:15pm

There seems to be a number of people quite upset that Hana Yori Dango isn't on the list.

I for one, am also one of those people. D:

thread

» kaloo on September 5th, 2009, 7:59pm

Probably no one voted for Claymore because it lacks the Shonen Cliches we all love. Or rather it doesn't have enough of them

And I voted Hana Kimi, because I read it through in one sitting.

thread

» kokonut_soda on September 5th, 2009, 9:32pm

I pretty much guessed all of those would be in the top five, but really....Beast Master? Was/is it really *that* popular? ......I had no idea. :\

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 6th, 2009, 3:41pm

I didn't know that either. I mean I like it but one of the best?

thread

» kanosa on September 5th, 2009, 9:44pm

In my opinion Furuba was an angsty story featured around a Mary Sue who tended to have everyone around her eventually love her.
Skip Beat! was my absolute reason to live until it became extremely dragged out and repetitive.
Mars bored me and I couldn't finish it >___>;
Ouran is wonderful~ but yeah did drag on a little and has become wordy in recent chapters.
So I'll have to go with Hana Kimi~ Kept me wanting more (doki doki!) and brought me into the scanlation world AHA Though for some it does drag on a bit~

thread

» Sindas on September 5th, 2009, 10:07pm

Wonder if you'll dare go on until best hentai & best Yaoi?
=)

thread

» BaeSooky on September 6th, 2009, 12:57am

I was wondering the same for BL. XD

But don't think so. These polls are aimed at the general public. Hentai and BL seem to be the minority here. xD

thread

» voraciouszest on September 8th, 2009, 7:54pm

I couldn't possibly manage to vote for my favourite yaoi. There's just so many.... *______*

thread

» Crowned_Cumber on September 9th, 2009, 2:54pm

I hope so, it would be interesting to see what the favorites were in less mainstream genres.

thread

» Dubby on September 5th, 2009, 10:27pm

It was obvious Skip Beat would be the popular choice, and Furuba and Ouran would follow closely behind, but no matter if I adore all those series, Hana-Kimi gets my vote. D: Mostly cause if it weren't for it, I wouldn't have found scanlations and be here in the first place.

LOTS OF LOVE TO IT.

P.S: lamb, read Mars. It's honestly my second favourite option up there (after HK of course).

thread

» shoujo_forever on September 5th, 2009, 10:40pm

wow yeah XD
I'm the same with you for Hana-Kimi...

thread

» Mierten on September 6th, 2009, 5:59am

Perhaps this is the best that will happen with the poll. Getting to know the ones you hadn't read makes you the winner regardless of the final numbers.

thread

» Althaea on September 5th, 2009, 11:13pm

most of the manga in the poll are a bore but its interesting to see something ive nvr heard of before. maybe i should try reading it

thread

» rina_yukina on September 6th, 2009, 1:01am

I voted Fruits Basket only because I haven't seen the others before..now, I will have even less of a life..XD

thread

» Mierten on September 6th, 2009, 6:02am

As Ouran shows, the ones in the process of being released with unsatisfied fangirls has a headstart on completed ones. The real way to know would be to only have ones that were completely published/scanlated 2 or more years ago -- then you would be measuring its long-term popularity.

thread

» mewpudding101 on September 6th, 2009, 7:25am

Yay~ One Piece won~ Weird that Soul Eater wasn't there~ XD I voted for that on the forums. But... ew... I don't really like those shojo series all that much at all. I mean, I like Furuba, but not like, cult-like...

thread

» Ev3 on September 6th, 2009, 8:23am

It's quite hard to answer for me ...and it's a bit unfair, some of those series are not over yet... Skip beat is great but I'm waiting for the end ( a bad end can waste everything! Even if I liked the serie like crazy, if the end sucks, everytime I will read it again, the only thing I will be able to think is that how the end was messed up) and the other hand furuba was somehow sweet despite the theme, when kyoko's bursts of anger are kind of refreshing for an heroine...
maybe adding a "blank vote" or "do not agree/care" "others" would be also representative of the opinion of the voters
but aaargh!! the last chapter of skip beat was reaaaaally persuasive ^^ ! it made me choose biggrin

thread

» Ferozban on September 6th, 2009, 12:25pm

well it's obiovus no one voted for claymore. i often witnessed the discussion wheather claymore is seinen or shonen.

most people just dont even know claymore is seinen. i've seen mayn threads in many different forums where people called claymore seinen or listed it amonst favorite seinen. Someone allways had to tell them that it is serialized as shonen.

well its only natural people think claymore is seinen. like someone posted before, it lacks the shonen stereotype plot.
so asking for favorite shonen, of course claymore cannot win.

the poll's result has no weight anyways. the voting list is what is accurate.
just look at the new poll, where is Nana? how can this poll be accurate about the best shoujo if nana is missing. even if skip beat would probably win anyways, nana is one of the most populat shoujo.

and again the same problem as claymores arises for nana. most people think nana is josei. someone allready states this in the comments lol^^

thread

» A Black Dude on September 6th, 2009, 12:53pm

yep exactly...cuz they were trying to act like this just wasnt another pointless popularity contest where you already know the winner before hand. i hate when they try to disguise these polls...if i knew i this wasnt going to be takin seriously i would have changed my vote for the shonen poll.

thread

» frozen_night on September 6th, 2009, 1:07pm

Ooh, this one's really a toughie...I'm actually torn between MARS and Skip Beat. I know Skip Beat's going to have a ton of votes just because it's amazing, but...hmm...Fruits Basket's third on my list xD;;

-sigh-

Whatever xD;; -tosses in vote for Skip Beat-

thread

» tgirl on September 6th, 2009, 1:12pm

There's a lot of better (a.k.a. more interesting) shoujo out there than what's on the list, but thankfully, Skip Beat is there. I voted that yesterday. Go, Skip Beat!! ^o^ Yarrr!

thread

» Da-manta-ray on September 6th, 2009, 3:38pm

Ouran for the win! With Fruits Basket in a close second ^^

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 6th, 2009, 3:39pm

I'm not sure what to vote for. One one hand MARS is the first manga I fell in love with*note it is not the first manga I read.* But the story is so very very good. On the other hand Fruits Basket holds a very special place in my heart. And Skip Beat what can I say, it is currently the manga I anticipate the most. Every two weeks I'm here checking if it has been released yet. XD

I don't think it's fair if it were best finished manga or best ongoing this would so much easier. :/

But please /please/ do read MARS. It's pretty awesome.

I think that Skip Beat has the unfair advantage of being currently read while the other series have been finished.

Also, I had no idea Cat Street and Beast Master were so popular. I really do love those stories. I rated them 9 or 10 but the best? I do love Basara, HYD, and Koukou debut and think they are some of the best shoujo.

even this is a scrambled post. Overall this is a good pick of shoujo.

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 6th, 2009, 3:45pm

oh I forgot Ouran was ongoing. oops

w/e I voted for MARS, if it were ongoing it would be Skip Beat in a heart beat

thread

» Kiseki-chi on September 7th, 2009, 2:19am

Aww... D: And Kimi ni Todoke is such a great manga too.

The demographics should be further split into the magazines meant for younger ages and the ones meant for older.

thread

» daniyagami on September 7th, 2009, 8:48am

Antique Bakery is the best shoujo ever in my opinion (and in the experts opinions, since AB won the best shoujo prize in Japan). I can't believe it´s not in the poll.

thread

» vietangelix on September 8th, 2009, 11:26am

It doesn't say it is shoujo here though~

thread

» kawaiiairbender on September 8th, 2009, 7:09pm

but they give best shoujo manga awards every year. And that was only one company, there are other companies/organizations that give awards. :/ So there would be a ton of manga on the list...

(*If we went by the Kodansha manga awards for shoujo from 2000-2009 I still highly doubt Antique Bakery would win because Fruits Basket and Kimi ni Todoke would beat it out.

Also, the western* audience doesn't necessarily like the same as the Japanese audience. And to be honest Antique Bakery isn't as popular as the titles mentioned. Otherwise it'd been suggested.

thread

» maxcrazy7 on September 8th, 2009, 1:54pm

I did not vote because I didn't read none of these title, but did saw the anime for Fruits Basket and Ouran High School Host Club the later was ok but the heroine in FB was meh.

thread

» voraciouszest on September 8th, 2009, 7:53pm

Ah, shoujo really makes my head hurt. They're all pretty good... For about four volumes or so. Then the mangaka figure out that they can make more money if they continue the series for lord knows how long and that's when the stories start going bad. Now that I think about it, shounen is the same. lol. *hiss*

thread

» PhoenixRe on September 10th, 2009, 2:30am

All of them are shoujo and I liked most of them but the thing with me is that from all these only the 3 can be considered as shoujo. What I mean is that skip beat and host club even if they are shoujo the strongest trait is their comedy so I cant really compare them with the others as shoujo because it is their comedy that make the most impression. The other three however are shoujo/romance with trais of comedic scenes nothing more so I can think of them as shoujo. I know that skip beat is going to win and I like it the most from all the above but I voted for hana kimi as tha one i liked the best from fruits basket, mars and hana kimi

thread

» voraciouszest on September 10th, 2009, 4:13pm

Well, that's not necessarily true. You're completely forgetting that shoujo is a demographic group rather than a genre of work. Skip Beat and Ouran are most definitely created for the shoujo demographic of readers. Shoujo =/= Romance.

thread

» vietangelix on September 10th, 2009, 11:10pm

Yeah because shoujo means "girl".
So shoujo manga is girl manga,
just like shounen is boy manga.

thread

» PhoenixRe on September 11th, 2009, 6:29am

Actually you are right
I completely forgot that is a demographic category
Well cant blame me though. I mean more than 80% of all the shoujo I read was also romance... bigrazz

thread

» littleprince on September 15th, 2009, 4:11am

Well you know, I myself voted for Skip Beat, but probably a series that is still ongoing shouldn't be compared to a completed series. Like maybe if both Skip Beat and Hana Kimi were both completed, I wouldn't know which one to vote for, since ongoing series are still "hot" for readers.

thread
