New Poll - Disliking Stereotypes
This week's poll is from our member fantas-ie. Out of the provided list of stereotypes, which one do you dislike the most? And if you're most hated stereotype isn't on the list, post it in the comments below!

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related):
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: How do you feel about time skips in a series?
Choices:
I tend to like them - votes: 4551 (34.4%)
I tend to dislike them - votes: 3346 (25.3%)
I don't care - votes: 5067 (38.3%)
I've never encountered one - votes: 274 (2.1%)
There were 13238 total votes.
The poll ended: June 2nd 2012

The reason I don't like "I don't care" options is because they don't tell you much and usually a lot of people like to vote for that option...

All of the above. The way they are worded... all of the above.

This one is missing the Tsundere, and/or "stupid" girl trope.

Can't vote b/c my sister already voted. But none of the options up there are what I dislike the most.
Honestly, the question and the choices for the question are kind of confusing though.

Stereotype I dislike: Americans=blond and "open minded" eg "overly friendly" greetings if you know what I mean.

Yeah....it's annoying when I read about it.

Quote from mysstris
Stereotype I dislike: Americans=blond and "open minded" eg "overly friendly" greetings if you know what I mean

Yep, that's a good one. A character gets nearly assaulted and he/she says "No, it's normal. That's how they say hi! in the USA/Europe." lolwut?

thread

» Artimidorus on June 2nd, 2012, 12:39pm

Urg, that does bother me. My first time reading that, I did a double take. I certainly don't remember ever being greeted like that, and pretty sure I would remember; especially, considering how American's love their personal space. Heck, in elementary we are taught how to put our arms out and make our "personal space bubble" and that was as close as we could get in lines and stuff.

I also hate how Americans are so often portrayed as the most racist creatures on the planet. If I see an American, I just know someone is getting called a monkey soon.

voted for "The shy, innocent, and cute character" they annoy me to no ends

thread

» Sorcha on June 2nd, 2012, 1:43am

Honestly, the one that I find most disturbing is the main character's possible love interest who end up hitting the mc for stupid reason for every chapter. This case is usually found in moe-centered-harem manga, with Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu as a perfect example. Its not a problem if the mangaka able to deliver it nicely tough.

Ah, one more- the gossiping troops.

thread

» MatrixM on June 7th, 2012, 11:10pm

That's the 'Tsundere' character type mentioned in the comments above. At times 'tsun tsun' [onomatopoeia for acting cold], at times 'dere dere' [loving].

thread

» VawX on June 2nd, 2012, 2:07am

That's why I need "I don't care" option since if the mangaka decided to write that kind of character then that's it, I'll accept it mmm...

thread

This one is hard, but I went for the flowery dazzling character in the end. Especially the male ones. No no no no no.

thread

» FullArmageddon on June 2nd, 2012, 2:28am

That last choice isn't even fair. It's like putting your grandma next to Elly Tran Ha and Lyna Tran (google image them, you'll thank me) and being asked which you find the least attractive. The choice is obvious. So instead of that one, I chose the shy character, but the flowery one can also really annoy me.

thread

» NightSwan on June 2nd, 2012, 2:48am

The one who "suddenly acquires skills/powers and becomes the best in that field".
I just hate these characters so much.
They basically have opportunities fall into their lame, undeserving laps.

I'll vote "the perfect character" since perfection annoys me the most.

lol so much anger...

thread

I voted the evil and sly rival. I always find those types so annoying. Its like they are hateful just because.

The dumb guy who always gets the girl scored high.. laugh Tbh I like some dumb male characters. Like Tamaki from Ouran High School Host Club. They make me laugh. This is one of my favorite scenes. I rather have these types get the girl.

thread

» kujika on June 7th, 2012, 3:08am

Tamaki is not dumb... like Ryuki of Saiunkoku Monogatari he has a smart and sly and tragic side to him.

Dumb is... the superficial kind of dumb.

Dang, if you're a normal guy (or a big bro, probably) obviously you will pick the last one (Dumb guy who gets the girl). In my case, if my little sister has one like that, I will immediately kick his a*s out from my house.

thread

» Here_And_Now on June 2nd, 2012, 8:43am

I feel the same! That's why I voted for the last one, it's essentially the same just reversed. It never ceases to irritate me how a mangaka can put a girl who can't count with her fingers together with perfection in male form and portray it as "true love"; and how girls can eat it up. Once you get older it becomes obvious Mr. Perfect is just with her because she's easy, and doesn't have enough braincells to think then say the word "No!"

The whiny, pure one that hates violence and cries a lot; and
The one-dimensional female antagonist that is loud, rich, pretty and does over the top stupid things to give the main heroine the opportunity to appear kindhearted, eventually saving the antagonist and forgiving her

it just hurts my soul reading aa megami sama and see how belldandy acts
is that really a person you want in your life?
a slave that only cares for you all the time and basically have no life whatsoever for herself
all she does is annoy me...following him to school, making him dinner, taking care of him ARGGHHH

she is perhaps the best...better than any shoujo i can think of... example of how japanese/male chauvinists want their woman

thread

» Artimidorus on June 2nd, 2012, 12:35pm

Wow.... of course it isn't like they represent every other form of female (violent and "empowered" with the ability to almost kill any male without ANY punishment at all, perfect at grades, stupid, etc.).

Also, do you respond the same way when the vast majority of males are a) stupid, b) just plain mean and bullies, c) fathers who have no hearts and only serve roles as oppressors? No, probably not. But then again, I guess that is what I can expect of a woman/misandrist such as yourself, correct? I don't view those as examples of how Japanese males want their mates, so much as the fact that that is ONE portrayal out of every other possibility. Don't be small minded. If I was offended every time a male was portrayed bad, I wouldn't be able to use any media, since that is almost all that is ever on t.v. or in books.

Went with The dumb guy who always gets the girl,
AKA, every shōnen male lead ever. Why must they always be
mentally challenged? 9 times out of 10, the lead is a hotheaded retard
instead of a cool and collected strategist. I don't want to read stories of people
who bang their heads against walls until either side gives in, most of the time
the wall that is actually at least equally retarded or one-dimensional.

Another role that is not an option, though somewhat laps with some of them,
is that weakass twerp who just whines
how useless he is and then this steaming of pile of retard comes and saves
his ball-less dick.

» Nirhtuc on June 2nd, 2012, 9:32pm

I voted for 'shy, innocent and cute character', but this is not quite the stereotype I dislike the most.

I'm mainly a BL, GL, and josei reader- one of the biggest reasons for this is because other genres always have those annoying, weepy, super-girly preschooler-looking female characters (who are usually meant to be aged around 16 to early 20s). I mean, sure, a few girls in real life are like that, but the majority are not! What's with mangakas' preference for lolita types anyway? It's ridiculous! I also dislike weepy/helpless guys in BL because...come on, that's exactly what I'm trying to avoid by reading BL in the first place! XD

A close second is the typical 'handsome and popular but a jerk/cold' male lead that is common in almost all genres. What excellent representations- jerks vs crybabies! no

thread

» Ibleda on June 2nd, 2012, 10:18pm

I voted for the "dumb guy who always gets the girl". This also applies other way round where the useless girl gets a harem of the 4 or whatever number of the school's most popular guys. Seriously? There may be guys like that, but I'm sure there are some uninterested and simply wanting a partner befitting to himself and the other party.

The next up I hate would probably be the "shy, innocent, and cute character", but that seems to overlap with the top so yea.

And another thing, I ABSOLUTELY HATE TSUNDERES! Don't you think they need to be re-educated? Do they have any discipline? Seriously! Watch that mouth of yours, I don't particularly have a grudge with you damn it! ... and yet they get away with it.

Ah and, I don't read ecchi or hentai like PERVERTED GUYS (who wasn't able to get popular enough for a real life girl) so I didn't vote for "big chested character" but yea. Besides, what's with the "chested" o.O|||.

I voted "The big chested character".. because honestly, those are the only ones that when they show up I just stop reading the manga... except on One piece, because Sanji is just funny and Nami defends herself pretty nicely, but when it's just boobs close-ups all the time... ugh!

The other stereotypes it all depends on how they are written that they get annoying.

thread

» eLfu on June 3rd, 2012, 1:51am

Damn, I should have voted for big-chested (because it completely ruined an awesome werewolf series I wanted to read) but since it says "character", not "girl"/"woman" I didn't know it was about boobs.
(yes I'm stupid)

Anyways I do hate the dumb guy/girl who always gets the girl/harem of boys (respectively), 'cause you don't have to read the series anymore to know how it's going to end. (And I like endings)

Furtherly, most of the time I have no problem with shy, innocent and cute boys (they can still be funny), but if it are girls... I want to hit them.
Although you shouldn't hit girls...

thread

» SAimNE on June 3rd, 2012, 2:38am

@Ibleda having a girl doesn't make great manga like Ai kora and oretama any worse, so I don't think that's a fair assessment of ecchi. Aside from that I picked the loser getting the girl cliche. I find it ok in ones like AI kora, where the dude struggles through and nearly kills himself for the girl. Only irks me when 10k chicks throw themselves at a worthless guy who does nothing but f up and get protected by the girls. Then he makes one semi-solid decision, and its like he is the bravest and best man ever for some reason... sekireis lead I.e.

thread

» ESE150 on June 3rd, 2012, 4:14am

WTF? Big breasts aren't a stereotype any more than flat chests, they're an attribute.

And the poll fails for not including the most annoying stereotype ever: the psychotic, uber-violent and short-tempered bitch who is always raging and beating the crap out of the main character over the slightest misunderstanding (and is always misunderstanding everything), yet the main character still falls in love with her FOR NOT GOOD REASON AT ALL (or for a weak and moronic reason, such as "she's remotely caring every time there's an eclipse"). And the worst part is that we're supposed to consider such an abusive relationship "romantic". See: Akane Tendo, Naru Narusegawa, Louise Françoise.

But out of the listed ones, I'd say "The dumb guy who always gets the girl" is the worst.

I hate when the big-breasted, "perfect" girl, who has a crew of organized admires fawning over her impossibly cute, innocent/shy disposition falls for the dumb guy -for no reason what-so-ever- while the extremely evil and sly rival, who usually uses her phony flowery words and dazzling good looks to flirt with everyone, tries to break them up.

thread

» wolfinthesheep on June 3rd, 2012, 2:04pm

I hate almost every single one of them equally. Big-chested character is dependent on the character, depending on if it's the central part of their character, and if it is, if it's treated purely for comic-relief (like Mx0, where the big-chested side character is a running gag because her face is always hidden, but everyone knows it's her).

The flirt, I almost never have a problem with. If it's the "casanova that can't stand getting turned down", then yes, very annoying. Someone just casually flirting with every character usually ends up being funny, or has enough personality to be likeable.

To be honest any of these can be either not bothersome, or a serious bother depending on the way they are executed and how many of them appear in one manga. I voted for the "dumb guy who always gets the girl" though I would also like to include the gender reversed option in that, cause that's what tends to happen in shoujo. It's not neccessarily the airhead type that bothers me though, more the stupid jumping to conclusions selfish (crybaby) dumbass type =.=

Stange poll. Some "stereotypes" aren't stereotypes at all.

The perfect character. I hate them guts, but TRULY perfect characters are 99% shojo only thing. In shounen perfect characters are ether really f**cked up in the end (only "looking" perfect the first glance) or MC older brothers, senseis, friends they gonna outgrow anyway.

The big chested character Why this is a Stereotype? And big breasted compared to other characters or just looking "big breasted"? "Big breasts" it's not a part of a person character. It's just a trait. And like someonе mentioned before girls probably vote against it for the same reason guys vote against "The dumb guy who always gets the girl" biggrin

The characters with fan-girls / fan-boys Characters in manga have fanboys for a reason. It's all depend on you like the REASON someone got fanboys or not.

The shy, innocent, and cute character Shojo heroines? Coz i have a difficult time finding characters like that i can "dislike" in shounen manga. May be their just not someone type, but it's hard to "dislike them the most".

The flowery and dazzling character either "The perfect character"(or only "looking" perfect the first glance) or extremly stupid and naive.

The person who flirts with everyone Something from shojo manga? Coz it's hard to remember a character like that from shounen. And passing obscene jokes at any girl you see is NOT a flirting at all.
The dumb guy who always gets the girl The only real Stereotype here.

thread

» ragunmap on June 5th, 2012, 9:28am

I also find the poll somewhat strange as by using the word "stereotype" I thought of something like "North American peoples are all nice" or "All Asians are smart". Well, since this is a manga poll, I guess the way the options are worded are simplified version of some characters.

thread

» dustdog on June 4th, 2012, 10:00pm

It's a bit tough to go with just one but I chose the perfect character, since the archetype is more likely to show up over multiple genre's than the specific ones like the dumb guy who gets the meow girl which only really shows up in shounen, but would have been my second choice anyway. I guess you can always flip the sexes to whatever genre you like for it though, dumb girl gets the hot guy, dumb guy gets the hot guy, etc.

Harems and the dumb-average looking guy/hot girl premises have really put me off shounen.

thread

» Raine-san on June 5th, 2012, 9:55am

I think there are two ways of saying "character"
One is the "type of character", which you can place into categories, and the other is the "character as a person".
I made my choice based on the first way of saying it.
A type of character can be liked as a character, not as a person, if it is well developed, and that means that if the character is detestable and you hate it, then it is a good character.
I can't always say "I hate this stereotype", because sometimes I find myself liking a character that belongs to that type, and that is always a pleasant surprise, because that means the character is well done, but I can say I hate a certain stereotype when it represents a stupid way of showing the reality, and that's why I voted for the dumb guy who always get the girl, cause is really annoying when they show you something pitiable as something beautiful, and that's what they do when this character shows up -w-

thread

» Furan on June 5th, 2012, 10:21am

I agree with Raine-san, I often find myself loving characters that in real life I would totally despise. It all depends on how well done the character is, so you can't really tie yourself up to any stereotype. But, if I analyze all the mangas I've read so far, the character I usually hate the most is the shy, innocent and cute character. Why? Because characters like that always seem fake to me. I can like them, but they have to be reeeaaally well done for me to believe that someone could actually act like that... And that is a hard thing to accomplish for any author.

As for the most voted one, the dumb guy who always gets the girl... I guess that I don't particularly hate them because I haven't read so many mangas with that kind of character. Hehe smile

thread

» mizaki2100 on June 5th, 2012, 2:52pm

It depends on the story. Like, there are big chested character I like while I also hate most of them. But if I have to narrow it down (from the choices), my vote goes to the boobie and the sweet Mary Sue character. Both are equally disgusting (in majority of the time).

thread

» cleodux on June 5th, 2012, 10:16pm

I choose "the dumb guy who always gets the girl"
Yeah i am pointing to the harem stereotype. Almost harem story where the guy magically got a lot of girls after him are usually dumb, nerd, not interesting at all. And i hate it because it is so unrealistic lol yeah i know, manga is supposed to be unrealistic, but please... I am female, that's why i take it very seriously. Also ugly girl who gets all the guys also can drive me mad.

Aside that. I also hate goody two shoes character, but it is not in the poll so yeah. I was contemplating to choose "the big chested character" also. Because it is not funny. And the boobs are in the way for me to fully enjoy the story.

thread

» Jooles on June 6th, 2012, 3:13pm

I was missing something in the lines of "'Pervert!' *slap*"-girls like everyone in Love Hina, etc. I much prefer the "Oh, you saw me naked, what are you gonna do about it? ;;wink" in that case, but then it always boils down to "AMAGAD, I'm so shy"-guys which I dislike just as much.

I'd love to see a manga (that is not hentai or romance-centered) and is still sexually MATURE. Preferably the main character; I've seen some with the brooding mentor-type with loose flings (ie. Holyland, for one). And definately preferably with all characters being adamant about the importance of shaving. But I digress.

thread

I'm much more annoyed by some authors inability to portray those stereotypical characters than by the stereotype itself.

thread

» That3rdGuy on June 7th, 2012, 7:01am

Should have had an "All of the Above" selection. All those unrealistic stereotypes are annoying as hell. Tsundere should also be up there. All equally annoying. Aren't stereotypes supposed to have some truth to them, though? The hundreds of series where all the girls in a Japanese middle school have giant breasts (lol never thought I'd ever see "Japanese" and "giant breasts" in the same sentence). I've never heard of anyone making a fan club about another student in school either, even if there was a celebrity in the midst. A fan club would be compromised of girls and a few homos, never straight guys if there ever was one. Seen plenty of dumb jocks get a smart girl, but that rarely lasts. Never met a shy, innocent, cute girl that didn't blossom once in high school, unless they had some major flaw about them (crazy, taboo hobbies, sociopath, etc.). Never met anyone who I'd describe as flowery and dazzling, unless you count that acid-tripping hippie drum circle lol. Never met someone who is both evil and sly, usually just two-faced idiots. Met plenty of people who thought they were perfect, but I can always manage to knock them down a peg or two and they then become the stereotypical cutter. Lot's of guys/girls flirt with everyone, so I guess that one rings true. I've lived in the 3 biggest cities in the US and never met any of these except the last one I wrote about. Otherwise, I guess these are fantasy stereotypes and are all annoying.
Since we are talking about Japan and the like, the only stereotypes I've seen in my trips there is the shy person (99% of Japanese), the flirty person, and the superiority complex assholes (the perfect ones). Lost count of how many people called me a gaijin and waito turasu (white trash) laugh Guess they don't realize racial slurs don't really bother Caucasians.
