New Poll - Hentai
I must apologize since I actually forgot to change the poll due to all the family stuff that was going on during the Thanksgiving holidays. It's the first time that I haven't done a weekly poll in time (since we started doing this all the way back in the beginning of 2008). Well, here you go. This week's poll comes from a suggestion from our member psycho-shocker. What level of sexuality do you prefer in your manga? I shouldn't really have to explain this one...

Apparently people are disagreeing over the definition of hentai and whether yaoi/yuri should be choices. For the purposes of this poll, hentai means any material that is 18+ (I live in the US) in a sexual manner, whether that be heterosexual or homosexual. Borderline H is basically almost there, but not quite. Ecchi is limited to maybe a boob flash or something like that.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Last gen console?
Choices:
Wii - votes: 2941 (23.1%)
PS3 - votes: 5996 (47%)
Xbox 360 - votes: 3814 (29.9%)
There were 12751 total votes.
The poll ended: December 3rd 2013

And PS3 wins this one! I actually bought a PS3 during Black Friday... I'm primarily a PC gamer, but I decided to get the PS3 since it was a good deal and I want to finally play some PS3 exclusives (like The Last of Us, Ni no Kuni, Uncharted, Beyond: Two Souls, Metal Gear Solid, some Final Fantasty, etc)

I feel like this poll grossly undermine all the female readers out there. How about "smut" and "yaoi" that many female readers relate to more? after all, our line of erotic mangas are hardly "hentai"

There are female readers out there that do read hentai, like me, so I don't really agree with this statement. Although I do prefer yaoi to hentai.

I don't really like ecchi either. I find it the most annoying since it doesn't lead anywhere and it can just be a huge distraction. Something like Highschool of the Dead (I've only watched the anime, not the manga) was super annoying because I was trying to get into the action of the story, worrying about if a character is going to make it out alive, and then all of the sudden its just random panty shots and boobs jiggling. It just takes you away from the story with no real purpose.

I agree with the smut comment. Smut is different from Hentai, Borderline H, and Ecchi.

I choose H, but I love Borderline H aswell, most of the time it varies on what I feel like reading at that certain time. Some times I like a little plot with my H, other times I don't :/.

Also, I'm pretty sure most smut falls under borderline H either way you look at it.

Ecchi - A lot of strip teasing, sexual situations, Barbie doll anatomy, implied sex if any.

Borderline H - Strait nudity, briefly shown sex scenes, focuses on plot before and after sex.

Hentai - 3 pages of plot, 15 page sex scenes, everything but genitalia shown (silly Japanese censorship!)

I would assume this poll would apply for either. I mean, sex is sex. Do we really need to be specific on the type of sex in order to have an intelligent conversation about it and its use in manga?

No. Since in hentai, borderline H, and Ecchi there are already yaoi and yuri sub genre. Heck, even I know about this information, and I'm not even a fan of this kind of manga.

But somehow you don't see me throwing tantrum about this poll or any other poll that doesn't cater to my interest.

Their might be hentai with yaoi as sub genre, but yaoi and yuri is still a genre on it's own. Yaoi and Yuri still has sexual intercourse (yaoi is supposed to for female audience and yuri for male audience. However their is also yaoi directed to male audience. This is called Bara, strange enough the opposite demography doesn't exist.) Without sexual intercourse also exist, called shounen-ai and shoujo-ai respectively. Borderline yaoi and yuri also exists, but it's most of the time marked with both indicators like yaoi and shounen-ai or yuri and shoujo-ai. wink

I have to seriously object to that
there are 11600 series in baka update with "yaoi" tag
and there are approx 200 series in baka updates with both "yaoi" and "hentai" tag
and NO series that is tagged yaoi and categorized as borderline H

What part of "prefer the most" don't you get? It isn't grammatically complex...is it?
It isn't about being picky, it's about being decisive.
It's actually more picky to get worked up over non-existent poll choices.
It's like walking into a poll booth and voting for all the candidates as your country's leader. WTF?

There are actually quite a few enjoyable hentai stories.
Brandish and Pandra being two of my favorites.
Though Pandra is more on the porn than on the plot.
Brandish has got a surprising amount of plot for the all the porn.

I am the one who suggest this poll. So I will give a proper reason why I don't included yaoi or yuri in the poll.

Baka-Updates Manga definition of

1) Ecchi: Possibly the line between hentai and non-hentai, ecchi usually refers to fanservice put in to attract a certain group of fans.
2) Hentai: Adult sexual content in an illustrated form where the FOCUS of the manga is placed on sexually graphic acts.
3) Yaoi: This work usually involves intimate relationships between men.
4) Yuri: This work usually involves intimate relationships between women.

With those definitions, I thought yaoi and yuri can be either hentai, borderline h, ecchi, or none of them depend on the series itself. It just like comedy series can be either a slice of life or adventure. As simple as that.

As for why I replace smut with borderline h, simply because the definitions of smut is more vague than borderline h. I'm sure people understand that borderline h is something between ecchi and hentai, as for smut? I'm still not sure myself.

I went for Borderline H in the end. Although I read hentai, it's rare to find a decent story that fits in with all the sex too, as obviously sex appears in every chapter of a hentai. I don't think I've read a hentai manga where there wasn't a sex scene in a chapter, which is understandable because the reason we're reading it is because that's what we want to see XD
I know there are some decent hentai manga out there, but I find most of the borderline manga I've read balance it quite well, and the sex scenes usually pop up in somewhat appropriate places.
Ecchi I read too, but yeah I agree with people saying it's just a tease.

Well not all females are into yaoi, or yuri, and plenty like hentai -> Women who read hentai! (a thread in the 18+ section of the forums). Also I'm sure there are men out there who like yaoi/yuri and I disagree with chomio comment saying yaoi is meant to be for women, and yuri for males statement, but that's not the point.

Although I do agree with Hespia Klarerin (and others) I think smut should be added as an option.
Quote
Smut: Deals with series that are considered profane or offensive, particularly with regards to sexual content
This is from the genres page, and seems relevant to the poll.

I also agree that yaoi, and yuri should be added as an option (but not because it's more for the female members).
This post tells me that in this site they are not sub genres of hentai. but a genre itself.

(As for my vote, I'll wait to see if changes are made, or the very least a comment from lambchopsil saying it's not going to be added.)

You never responded to to the possible smut option ...

I agree in the US (which I'm also from/in) sexual manner is for both heterosexuals and homosexuals, but in mangas hentai and yaoi/yuri are not separated. I never seen a yaoi hentai (unless it had both straight, and gay couples in it). I think since all polls on this site are suppose to be manga related the poll choices should be in regards to how the manga world considers heterosexuals and homosexuals separate.

- Now if you want to exclude yaoi/yuri due to it not being hentai and not related to hentai I could understand that.

As for the answer, these days it seems to be full on Hentai for me. That is what I read the most, if we just count it by "pages per week" basis. Discounting the occacional archieve binging of a whole series.

Why? I say, why not.

Went for Borderline H.
Though I have read some H-Manga and have read quite a few Ecchi ones, I found that the story in Borderline H is quite better. I mean, Prison School and Nana to Kaoru have both a very interesting story, the art is very good, and plot development is good as well.
However, Slut Girl, that H-Manga is the best H-Manga I've read not for the actual sex but the story is good.
Btw, I would like some users that voted for Nothing of the sort to post their Lists and actually show proof that there's no Ecchi in it. Find it quite hard to believe nowadays.

I really don't know how to classify the yaoi I have read, none of them have the "ecchi" or "hentai" tag/genre on it (not even "smut" in some cases). I guess that is why some people want to put yaoi/yuri as a option, but I understand the definitions of it etc etc.

I picked borderline H. Like everyone said, ecchi is just teasing and nothing else and hentai is way too extreme, porn without plot. Bordeline H is a great balance with plot and sex in a decent and sexy way (even though some bordeline H I have read involve peeing?? I don't really get what is so sexy about that).

Borderline H

Ecchi gets silly after a few chapters and frustrating if it doesn't go anywhere in the end.
Hentai, on the other hands, focuses too much on the sex scenes and not enough in plot.

Borderline H is the best of both worlds: hentai scenes to draw my interest and, usually, good plot to keep me interested afterwards.
