Brilliant comedy and deconstruction of shoujo tropes

Takane to Hana is a romantic comedy that disregards and subverts most of the usual tropes and cliches that have come to typify shoujo manga. The best way to describe this may be, "What happens when two tsunderes start to fall in love with each other?" but another way to describe it is, "Freaking hysterical."

This manga has great art (particularly the super deformed/chibi art and face reactions) and incredible banter between the two leads that will have you giggling out loud. The drama aspect is light, the romance is also light and on a slow burn, but the comedy is in your face in every chapter.

Even if you are put off by shoujo manga in general, I highly recommend this one. It's suitable to be enjoyed by all ages and genders - just remember to bring your sense of humor.

Takane to Hana

The first time I saw the cover which has actually a nice art, I became interested with it. So, I gave it a try. The first chapter is really interesting and I think it's refreshing. Thought at first I think the story started as cliche, it has a really nice turn of events that makes it different. The MCs personalities are different, unexpected and unusal compared to other shoujo mangas. It's really funny how they sarcastically treat each other so hard ≧﹏≦ that lately, I've been wondering how will love grow between these two?
Overall, this is highly recommended to anyone who loves new and refreshing story. Tbh, so far, I haven't read a manga that has a similar feel and approach like this.

I REALLY LIKE THIS ONE

Not like ordinary shoujo drama, the character are cute, refreshing, funny and sweet at the same time. Takane also different from the usual male lead, he's awkward, M that pretends to be S, and doesn't want to admit that he has fallen head over heels with Hana.

At first I thought it's pretty much the same as other shoujo manga, BUT IT'S NOT. Please give it a try, you'll love it. I hope the scan group will keep upload new chapters.

It's funny, lighthearted, but can also be serious

It's a fun manga that still manages to be serious and sweet. The characters are developing nicely, and the way the story unfolds about them is really well done.
I highly recommend it.

Totally refreshing

I'm really glad I tried this series out - I find it very unique and refreshing for a shojo! The basic premise of "rich-guy-meets-commoner-girl" is so overdone in manga that I was expecting the characters to follow their usual archetypes. Boy was I wrong! Hana, our heroine, is a bold, spunky high schooler with a sharp tongue. I find her hilarious and endearing for all the times she shoots down Takane's arrogant delusions. It's nice to see a shojo heroine who doesn't go weak in the knees every time the male MC says something.

Takane is equally endearing in my opinion. In most manga's featuring a rich lead guy, they are smug and arrogant (which Takane is) but also usually dark/brooding/mysterious/lady-killer. That character trope gets really old really fast. But Takane is non of those things! He's conceited and pompous, yes, but he's also a total doofus and goofball who is fixated on constantly trying to one-up a 16-year old girl. Despite his age, he usually comes across as very innocent and naive, not for lack of trying to sound cool though. But he does have his moments where he really IS cool - which is good for fangirls/boys. smile

I believe that their current relationship (up to chapter 21) is reminiscent of the old saying that "the loser in love is the one that falls first."
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The way I see it now, both of them have feelings for one another but are confused by their competitive relationship. Hana hates losing, so admitting that she likes Takane would probably feel like she lost their one-upping game. Takane obviously has feelings for her, as depicted through his overprotective attitude and constant need to be with her, but he seems too prideful to acknowledge these feelings himself.

I think one of my favorite things about this series is how it turns typical shojo cliche's on their heads. That is not to say that they don't exist in this series (because well then it wouldn't be a shojo, would it?), but most of the time the author uses comedy to casually dismiss any dramatic cliche. I would strongly recommend reading this if you're bored of the usual shojo tropes and looking for an authentic funny story about two tsundere's who can't help but poke each other's buttons.

Brings back memories

This manga is actually really good, take my word for it. Its the manga we wanted and needed (LOL). Too often the female protagonist of shoujo manga is a ditzy, weak little girl who needs the male lead to basically "protect" her. This manga is completely different.

Hana is an intelligent, quick witted, and adorable character. She knows how to handle Takane and their relationship is mutually built on a foundation of winning/losing. Turns out our main character is the elusive female sadist. And to the people saying she's mean to him for no reason, I assume your eyes are just knotholes. Its bickering love, they both play with each other. She just happens to be better at it than him.

Btw Takane is a refreshing male lead. He's bit pure and naive, but just as much as a fighter as his counterpart.

In the end I'm excited to see where this goes and can't wait for more chapters. Takane and Hana remind me so much of me and my ex. That bickering, trying to one up each other, with a somewhat (light hearted/jovial) sadistic manipulation. If you're into that, check it out

Description is off!!!!

The description is off!!!! I started reading the manga because it says that she accepted anyway, which she didn't. So it's not a "I accepted (to anger you) so what will you do? *evil smile* " but "I decline *makes scene* (and he likes it)" It is a totally different story than stated

This manga is really funny and watching the main characters fight or their dialogues is so hilarious! the main girl is a little childish but she stands for what she thinks and has a personality (somthing really weird in most shojos) and even though the main guy seems selfish, he has his good side and really cares for her. It's really refreshing reading this serie.

Great but loses steam

[edited] This is the funniest thing ever. At least for the first chapter. The main character doesn't give a crap and her tsundere love interest is a narcissist who's always bickering with her. It's awesome. But then the author loses steam, as the story was already pretty much wrapped up with the first chapter.

The mc...starts treating the guy like crap for needless drama reasons. I want to punch her for being so mean to him.

AND HE KEEPS COMING BACK TO HER DESPITE HER PISS-POOR TREATMENT OF HIM

Hopefully it picks up steam again but as of now, it's delving into regular cliche shoujo.

Most Shoujo = Total bore <> Takane to Hana

If you're like me (and kira6) that shoujos nowadays are a total bore and a repetition of the same thing but with different setting, you should give this one a chance. I'm always searching for a good shoujo story.

I've read the only scanlated chapter and It made me add this manga to my reading list.
