Too long?
by MySwirl

Many people mentioned, or rather complained, Conan is dragging on for too long. I can somehow understand these negative feelings about the length, but I can't agree completely with it, actually. I know this series since I was a child as well, but I'm rather happy it hasn't ended yet. I want to read more cases, because I think the author hasn't dropped his standard of quality and the cases are still interesting and the characters are still appealing to me. Of course, I want to know how it ends as well, but I also don't want it to end on the other hand, because it would mean the end of japanese Agatha Christie-like mystery.
During the next 10 years or so I would appreciate an end as well, but how is it bad when a series accompanies you for your life: from childhood through growing up and then adulthood, and you are still loving it?

The joy lies in reading single cases

...and not just focusing on the ending. Readers of this series include but do not limited to who only care about the Black Organization. This series is not about Shinichi Kudo, it is about Conan (hence the title). The main plot needs its closure and Shinichi will need to be back someday, but every small case solved by Conan is packed with a lot of different material about criminal minds, psychology, life lessons etc. and is designed to be read independently.
The mangaka works hard on each chapter, and there rarely are filling frames, so I think giving the series a low rate just because it "doesn't end yet" is quite unfair. If we are talking about "dragging" then I will rather include series like Skip Beat (release once per month) and Glass Mask (how many decades have it lasted already?).

An excellent series, but...

As a fan of this series for over 10 years, I can easily say that Detective Conan has always been near the top of my list. This series is very well-known in Japan and other Asian countries, with its fans ranging from elementary school age to elders. This is due to its intriguing plot and characters. As earlier labelled, this series indeed falls under the mystery genre. However, I believe it also has the ability to draw in readers whom are fans of other genres, such as myself. I was captivated by the interesting plot, the humour, and lovable characters when I was a child, and to this day, I'm still in love with this series because of those reasons.

Now, while everything I said so far are positive reviews of the series, I did add in a "but" in the subject. In my opinion, if there is one flaw with the series, it's that it's too unnecessarily long! I'm definitely not the first person to mention this on here, so I won't talk too much into it. Basic point is, I feel like now that Detective Conan has gained a lot of fans in most Asian countries, Aoyama Gosho is just dragging it on for the money (just my opinion though). In an interview from 6 years ago, Aoyama mentioned that he already has the ending planned out; however, here we are 6 years later, it's still no where close to the end. This is extremely frustrating, especially for fans like me who has waited many years for the big conclusion. As much as I love the series, I also wish it would end soon, because seeing it dragged on like this for no reason, is extremely agonizing and annoying.

In conclusion, this series is definitely a good read, but its unreasonable length can be very frustrating.

My two cents

I think this manga has gone on long enough, a lot of people do (as I can see by reading the comments) but I do have a theory why the poor author won't be ending this one very soon.

Like most of the manga dominating the scene (Pokemon, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, too many to continue...) this one has been going on for YEARS. 10+ really. They've run for so long that stopping them would be like halting a moving train with your bare hands. It's difficult to end gracefully. (And no matter how much no one wants to admit it and barks about how it should end, ending it badly would only make us bark louder.)

Also, the manga industry -actually, the paper-based book industry as a whole- is going under. Nowadays, the future of manga relies almost solely on the backs of the big-boys (as I have dubbed them). It must be stressful and at times fairly boring to be writing the same story week after week for years on end. A good chunk of their lives has gone into this. Really, how many of us could keep people reading for over 10 years?

(Oh, and congrats to Tite Kubo for finally ending Bleach. Hope you go on to write other series but I really think you need a break >.< Take one.)

Anyway...back to my point (did I even have one besides ranting? >.>) Be kind to Aoyama-sensei. He's been writing this for almost 2 decades and that's worth a lot of credit. It'll end at some point, so we might as well go along for the ride smile

Overstayed its welcome

I started reading this series in 2001. It's been 16 years and there's still no end in sight.
Don't get me wrong, I think Case Closed is great, with one of the most solid, intriguing main plots out there in the detective genre. I don't think anyone can deny that Conan is a superbly smart series with lots of well-thought plot twists and characters.

However, by around volume 50 or so, the random cases (so-called "fillers") really got on my nerves. They dilute the main plot, and some fillers are just ridiculous. You can use simple common sense to figure that certain tricks and gimmicks are downright unperformable. Sad to say, but it is quite clear that Aoyama-sensei must be running out of ideas! And I'm really tired of the continual introductions of unknown, mysterious characters. Yes, I understand that they play a huge role in leading Conan to the Black Organisation, but come on - after like a dozen of them, isn't it time to unfold the Big Boss?

Lately, I don't even bother to read the cases. I just picked up the chapters that have something to do with the Black Organisation. Well, what can I say? I'm one of those fans that have grown frustrated.

All in all, I'd like to say: Read this series if you haven't. After all, it is like the biggest detective manga out there; and as I said above, the main plot surrounding the Black Organisation, the CIA, the FBI, the immortality pills, etc is fantastic. But if you are looking for something that is really focused on mystery and murder tricks, Kindaichi is probably a more fitting choice.

this manga used to be my favorite manga years ago. but now, even I still read it and I think it still a good manga, I cant place it in my top list manga anymore. it just too much, too long for it running. because there's so little progress on him to find out who the hell black organisation. When will this manga end, and conan back to his true form? it has been over 15 years..... and i'm tired to wait.

I've been following this manga for 6+ years already, and there has been no progression in terms of story. That's extremely frustrating for me! I can't read this anymore.

I think the author is honestly just looking at this series as a business. He wants to pull out as much wealth as he can by dragging this story past its long overdue ending.

Now that it's been many years since the start of Detective Conan, there have been many many many different animes and mangas coming out... And everytime I watch 1 episode of Death Note/Naruto/TTGL/Another/Mirai Nikki etc etc... I go back to watch 2 episodes of Detective Conan.. Because it is different. The "hyping" in most animes these days is just inhuman, however I do read alot of books so the younger audience might find Detective Conan somewhat boring,
I used to love Death Note but now... It's like Scooby Doo compared to DC.

When I was a kid, I fell in love with this series. Everyone in my class was in Conan's Hype. Everybody talked about this series. Follow the manga and even the anime. But after YEARS without unending detective stuffs, we all grew tired and left this series. It was a pity for such a great beginning starts to drag A LOT. Years after I left this manga, I returned to check on it just to find out that it hasn't finished yet. The other manga that start around this series already finished and the mangaka already began to make a new series. But not with this mangaka. I feel like Aoyama-sensei only want to milk with this series.

The other detective manga such as: Kindaichi and Tantei Gakuen Q are better than Conan, but Conan still get the spot light more than those two. Conan indeed has great story (though more of the time is more like nonsense than logic), rather good style of art, but lack on character developments and most of the stories are only circling around the same thing. Kaito Kid is the one who is more famous than the other characters, so Aoyama-sensei started to milk him too. The trio kids who always with Conan are SUPER annoying, but Aoyama-Sensei never do anything about them. As I mentioned earlier, the story is SUPER dragging and circling around, I want to know Conan's adventure and how he can restore his normal life! Who are those two black suit men? This is the biggest mystery in this manga. But after more than 10 years, I don't see anything. Heck, they even make a new movie. I wish Aoyama-sensei will just end it manga soon. It was a great potential, but with 3 little brats and one stupid detective (Goro) the story looks like an irony comedy.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Goro always slept whenever Conan want to solve the case, yet nobody ever think about how odd it is?? Even though it's his "QUIRK", Goro should think odd for himself. I mean he can't recall anything after the case HE solved, doesn't it bother him?? Maybe he has some kind of incurable disease?? He should at least fear for himself, don't you think? And nobody try to look into Goro's behind to check on something? Or maybe some passer by unintentionally looked at him? This is why I said Conan is a no-brainer story

Conan has lost its charm long ago. I don't know why people still hype about this. Maybe because there's not much detective manga, so people still lingering unto this one. But for me, I'd rather wait for new Kindaichi than this. At least Kindaichi knows how to end it without dragging to long and the case is more mysterious, with good logic than Conan.

I really like this manga but it really need to start wraping up the story and move on with the plot. Seriously 88vol now lol. Yet it be sad to see if go when it ends at the same time. Maybe the author could just do a spin off series if wanted to do more stories.
