Beautiful

I shared the sentiments with some previous comments: this didn't start well for me. The tension was too much at the beginning. Then the suspense just kept on going and prolonging. I thought to myself: Argh! I might not be able to take this.

And I did. I stopped reading it until today. When I saw this ended, I jumped at the chance. I was not sure why. Sakamichi no Apolon was great but not outstanding in my mind. Still, I was intrigued. The series is drawn so beautifully. The characters are so different (if you know how popular authors tend to replicate their characters into different titles and it get repetitively boring, this is not).

Damn. It is beautiful throughout. Seriously, Kodama Yuki is master storyteller. The way she always builds up tensions then suspend right at the end of each volume without rushing or dragging is a feat! And yet, despite all that, the whole thing feels as a breeze at the end. It's superbly dramatic, trickling as if there are tiny streams curling their ways into the minds and the hearts of the readers (a.k.a. me). It's so feminine with appreciation for the tradition yet progressively looking to the future. There are pains and hurts and misunderstandings. But the author only gears towards what can be and will be positive. People can always make amends. People can always forgive. People can always move on, living with both their pasts and their prospects. And these make all the commentaries on how seemingly closed and distressful the society of Japan hopeful and forthright.

I love the characters too. I love Hikaru for his frankness. The pacing makes his traits less and less childish as the series progresses but into someone, even at the start, most thoughtful and considerate. Again, I love him being upfront all the time and speaking his mind with care - it's a breath of fresh air to manga really. Hotaruko is lovely too. At first she seems overbearing and kind of only thinking about herself (she has all the rights really). Gradually she starts noticing things around her and becoming more observant of others and of herself. Madoka and Mayuko are poignant and forever loving. And all other characters too: Zenji, Narumi, Chinatsu, Rio... Even if they are side characters, they have their own thoughts and progresses.

Extremely well-made manga. Absolutely recommended.

Thank you author-san and everyone who support you 🙂

Really looking forward to reading more of this. Currently 2 volumes in.

Kodama Yuki has a great knack for creating interest in art and culture. After reading Sakamichi no Apollon, I went to listen to jazz, now I'm watching owara.

The art is beautiful, especially with the dance elements and costumes. I'm excited to read more.

Thanks for scanlating, Stiletto Heels!

Annoying female lead

The series started great.....
but the female lead became more irritating as the chapters progress...
She is selfish, spoiled and very high maintenance..,
I feel sorry for the male lead for always covering for her and picking up her slacks..
She is very insensitive and an idiot... She lives in a small town where gossip easily spread...
I know that loving a person has got nothing to do with age and she is free to do whatever she wants but can't she restrain herself a bit for the sake of the Uncles reputation..
Not only is she very obvious with her feelings but she doesn't care if other people see...

I just hate this types of characters.. Her actions most of the time are unforgivable
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I completely hated her when she was acting jealous because the uncle (Madoka) was visiting and caring for her sick and dying mother... Like wtf!!!! She is really selfish!!!! Thinking more about the Uncle than her dying mother!!!!

Stepping Stone

An improvement on her previous works while not quite reaching the excellence of her current works.

I was not a fan of the cast (Chinatsu being the lone exception) or the ending.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The ending has Madoka driving to Hotaruko's wedding, but it doesn't confirm who she's marrying. Whether or not it's Hikaru, it severely undercuts the romance, which I would assume is the entire point of the manga.

The romance is the weakest part of the manga anyway, so maybe it's not that bad. And maybe I'll look back on this in a year or so and change my mind. At any rate, the characters here are both less interesting and less likeable than in her other works.

Recommended, as it's a solid read despite the problems I had with it (YMMV, per usual). Kodama captured something here and it's interesting to track how her storytelling has developed.

Decent descendant of Sakamichi no Apolon

I really like this manga. Kodama Yuki has her specific way of setting story and she is good when it comes to background details. Setting and secondary characters are more interesting than main leads and manga is quite informative about Owara-dance. Even though the "love triangle" was dragged out there is several reasons to read this work

I am surprised no one has commented on this series yet! So far it has a really interesting plot where it may look like a weird love triangle between a high school boy, his new classmate, and his uncle but I am predicting

past lives are the reason why Hotaruko and Madoka are so familar with each other.
The art is also on point and I am definitely keeping my eye out for any new updates smile
