Description
From Yen Press:
When Haruhi Suzumiya introduces herself to Kyon by asking if he's an alien, time traveler, or psychic, he knows his chances for a normal high school experience are ruined. Bold Haruhi takes a shine to him, and uses the force of her irrepressible personality to draft him into her club to find paranormal beings. Kyon soon discovers what she's looking for: Haruhi herself has the power to destroy and create entire universes at her whim. But if she knew about her ability, it could spell disaster for everyone.

I love this series. But I can't argue it has one BIG flaw. Time doesn't seem to flow. It is filled with fillers. It's been ELEVEN books, and the in-time has been just two years. It doesn't end! Full of unnecessary stuff.

Other than that, the plot is good, the characters and their relationships are good. It is good. Unfortunately, if you have limited time (tip: you do, as you will most certainly die), I cannot recommend this to you. There are better books that require less time and effort out there for you to read.

Very creative, very interesting read with excellent characters.

But if you plan on reading this series in English, be prepared to wait a LONG time to catch up with the Japanese novels. To give you an idea of how far behind the official English releases are:

Volume 9 in Japan was released in April 2007.
Volume 9 in the U.S. is planned for release in April 2013.

Volumes 10 and 11 don't even have a projected U.S. release YEAR yet.

its not as good as i had hoped
its very repetative
every other page its reminding us again who the characters are... what they are like and how they look
its filled with technobabble
and...nothing really happens...the stuff that happen does not matter much since it will just go back to normal again...and you know this so...it just takes away something from the experience

and... sure... endless 8 should not be blamed on the novels
but they certainly made me feel ANGER toward the whole haruhi universe

i just dont like it very much

I love this series so much, go read it, never a dull moment ever, Haruhi and Kyon's relationship is fun. Read this series you will not regret it the story is amazing!

By the way, there are 3 books released in English, not 2. The fourth will be brought over November 2nd though.

Fantastic light novel, Just great, I mean really really great. It's funny and just manages to keep a smile on your face while reading it, It won't get old either. Vol. 10 should be released immediately. Upon finishing vol. 9 I am becoming increasingly aggravated that vol. 10 is not out.

i review after only 6 vols

ok, ive only read 6 vols of it so far and it is hands down the best light novel ive ever read. The wackynees/crazyness is epic on a grand scale, here is the kicker the crazynees is actually explained and throughly thought out. the scary thing is the big words that come flying at you, being 20 yr old college student im used to that happening but it even confuses me sometimes. My one and only harp about this is that the romance is not flushed out very well, but when i started reading i had gut feeling it wouldn't.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
after reading the interview the author did in 06, most of my thoughts i had it seems a lot of others did as well, one of questions asked was something like "what do see as a good romance story" his answer was something like "boy meets girl, they hang out and dont confirm there feelings for one another and what kept them together goes away, like highschool and they separate and after sometime later meet up again and get together", so we might see something like that at the end. when asked directly is this a boy meets a girl (friends) he wasn't sure and said he just goes what his guts tells him so we wont know till the end

The fanbase is frightening. The merchandising is suffocating. The sheer popularity is overwhelming. The series? Amazing.

The fans are stereotyped as a bunch of ItsuKyon shippers who just like the Hare Hare Yukai dance, but the series is so much more than that. Each novel is part of a very complex storyline, all of which is leading to unraveling the mystery that is Haruhi Suzumiya. It gets somewhat confusing once time travel gets involved, I'll give you that. However, if you read nothing else from the series, at least read books 1, 4, 8, and 9. Especially 1 and 4. And then rage like the rest of us at the lack of book 10. I think they are waiting for every man, woman, and child to have bought the other 9 books, all the DVDs, the character albums, and at least one figurine before releasing it.

An interesting read. The characters are highly personified and the setting is fairly unique. Those who understand Japanese or Chinese are encouraged to buy the novel itself to read. Sticking to a computer just to read a light novel defeats part of the essence of a light novel.

Also, if you watched the anime or read the manga before, the novel easily beats both of them out of the competition. There are just some things that words convey better than pictures or videos.
