Description
Madoka is surprised to discover that her parents have won a 100,000,000 yen (one million dollar) lottery. To make things worse, they inform her of their decision to pursue their lifelong dream of becoming doctors. What will happen to Madoka who, when deciding to stay behind, is left to fend for herself in a family acquaintance's (the Asagi's) guest house?

See, this is the problem I have when someone reviews it as "very girly." Some people who are already skeptical about delving into a shoujo comic will immediately be turned off because of what that term "girly" implies: candy floss, flowery, big-eyed hoopla. It rarely stands for anything less pejorative, and that pisses me off.
The 'bitou" in "Bitou Lollipop" stands for "low in sugar", and is an apt title for the manga that has "guts" to turn it's back on natural shoujo conventions, and give us something with more substance.
I'll have to agree with the first reviewer that it's "fun" though, because it is. I haven't read a shoujo manga in a long time that's as fun as this one. One that doesn't put too much focus on the dreaded " love triangles" or relationship rivalry. There are more equally pressing matters for the heroine than just her romantic escapades (be it family separation or a ghost), and that's what sets her apart from other shoujo heroines. It's also insanely funny, and each chapter leaves you thirsting for more.
Everyone should give this manga a try, including the skeptics.

A nice feature in which came across the course of the story for me (I’m 6 chapters in) is that even though potential love is looming in the air with its hidden depths, it is not similar to most typical shoujo. Love is not the end all be all, prominent label here. And I can honestly judge even none shoujo fans would be fond of this manga.
Modoka, the heroine of this story- is far from a weak and stupid girl like in most shoujo. She is not exaggeratedly strong and unbelievable either like in some shonen either, but she is- as you could say, in the middle. She is afraid of ghosts, and after becoming alienated and alone for the first time (living in a sub house alone) she is doing her best to overcome her fear, as well as live her life the best she can. That being said: her parents do come check on her every once and awhile, and show up whenever she needs them. So they do honestly care about her, and it’s not just a gimmick for her to be a typical shoujo girl when their gone.
The male characters are not 100% in love with Madoka at first sight. As well as they are not used as focus for plot division. They are -to put simply, natural. there were quite a few characters I hated with a passion. The male and female leads were good, but they were surrounded by terrible people.
Other than some awful character, it was a pretty good manga.

Madoka - I liked her, but she was kinda fickle and cruel. She dates Tomoyo and while dating him, she falls for Ono. She told Tomoyo she only saw him as a little brother and broke up with him. She likes Ono and then gets over him. Then she realizes she loves Tomoyo and has to deal with the fact that he's with someone else. Well, it's kind of her own fault all this happens because of her fickle feelings. She looked super cute with short hair in the second half.
Tomoyo - I liked Tomoyo. He was pretty tsundere, but considering some of the stuff he was going through then it's not surprising. I felt really bad when Madoka dumped him because she fell for that piece of shit Ono. He doesn't handle Madoka breaking up with him very well. Even though he's madly in love with her, due to the fact she hurt him and said she only sees him as a little brother, he felt tormented.
Ono - This motherfucker. He was in an affair with Tomoyo's mother. He was like the worst piece of shit character I've seen in a manga like this in a long time. The only thing I hated about the female lead, Madoka is that she falls for this idiot at one point. His brother is a piece of shit as well. He was slightly better after the timeskip.
Tomoyo's mother - She was the second worst after Ono. Now, it's clear that Tomoyo's dad worked a lot, but this woman was an awful fucking person. Instead of talking it out with her husband, she decides to cheat on him with a highschooler. She was very overbearing with Tomoyo and it came off as both of them having complexes about each other. The thing is her cheating on his dad caused him to have a hatred of her.
Madoka's dad - Another piece of shit who abandons his family to shack up with a prostitute. Aside from Madoka's mom, the prominent parents in this manga are awful fucking people.
Madoka's mom - She was cool.
Chizuru - She was a cool character as well. Sucks that she dies.
Runa - She was Tomoyo's unstable girlfriend. She was a pretty awful person as well.

Read the manga all the way to the end. Loved it. Another great work by a great mangaka.
For the people trying to classify the heroine Madoka as "masculine" or "feminine"... I'd say, more like, she's just a real person? She's strong, but she's not an island. Honestly I don't like characters who are relentlessly optimistic and sparkly about every frickin damn thing in life, and I don't like characters who are helpless wilting flowers that need constant rescuing from their rich, smart, hot, d-bag boyfriends. Madoka's not either, thank goodness.
One thing I noticed about this mangaka is that she starts with a cliched premise and then develops the story into something much more meaningful and alluring. Like this manga starts with the overused premise of the parents selfishly abandoning their child for whatever reason - but actually the parents are an integral (and really fun) part of the story, so the plotline is not as typical as you think it is.
I've been reading shoujo for years now and lately it's gotten to the point where I think 85% of it is just pure recycled garbage. Bitou (Bittersweet) Lollipop is a good read, definitely worth your time.

No. 1: The slowness of scanlation. I really (potentially) liked this story when I first discovered it years ago, but lacked, and continue to lack, the extraordinary patience necessary to follow it.
No. 2: The presence of the Shoujo Curse. I had just started tentatively reading some shoujo when I stumbled upon this highly unusual shoujo manga that has both good art (by shoujo standards), and a very non-shoujo-standard heroine. I was starting to enjoy her story thoroughly when there appeared on the scene that standard shoujo character the Smooth Operator. One thing I had learned by that point in my shoujo reading was that girls literally can't resist these guys, even if they start out hating them. Something female readers may not know (or care about!) is that most male readers can't identify with such men at all. I'm one of those. Therefore, as Our Heroine started out justly suspicious of Mr. Smooth Operator, and then gradually began to warm to him, and as I recalled that the only other male in the running for her affections was too nice to have a chance within the terms of the shoujo universe, my interest in this manga quickly waned.
Recommended for girl and woman readers who are very patient.

I really liked the art and the fact that this wasn't the typical Shoujo with a really naïve and weak heroine etc... However I didn't like how the plot evolved in the lasts volumes
So much potential but it could have been a lot better in the end.

Seriously, she just had to be a little bit more honest and Tomoyo didn't have to disappear like that. I didn't like the pitiful Madoka at that time (and why the short hair? She was so cute before with her long hair!) and that part of the manga was depressing...
As for their reunion in the end, I expected something more touching, and explicit. Seriously I don't even remember if they kissed at least!

This is a shoujo that stands out from the crowd. There are underlying elements of low-key mystery and unrequited desires that gives this romcom an edge. This manga is reasonably well-drawn from the start, and it's extremely funny.
Because the heroine isn't a cold pillar of self-reliant ice and nonexistent tear ducts, I wouldn't call her strong. She is codependent on her relationships to an extent, but she isn't an overemotional puddle of tears and inferiority complexes either. The two male leads also have their own dreams and problems to deal with and don't dedicate every waking moment to thinking about the heroine. Interactions between characters seem to be more complex than the average shoujo.
A gem.

I kinda like it at the beginning cause I thought the heroine was different from those shoujo stereotypes that I've countlessly read before.
But as the story progress it went downhill for me and it pains me to read it. I kinda stick to it till the end cause I want to know what happens to Tomoya.
Although it was a happy ending, it was kinda exhausting for me in finishing this. All the unnecessary shinanegans and the female lead being indicieve and dense made me really irritated...
It's only my opinion though...

I am definitely happy for Tomo and Madoka. But it's Ono that makes my heart aches still even at the end. Since last year, I have been reading a bit of love triangles. And somehow, all the good bits have two really good guys. But one of them is always (a little bit) misunderstood and at certain degree sacrificing by letting the girls go. And it's just a tad retarded that they would eventually find a super speed love at a few pages, worse panels, at the end. I mean, come on! How decent can the mangaka be for these poor lovefools? Or maybe I should blame the manga publisher and the magazine. Goddammit!
Anyhow, it IS a really good read. But my heart aches too much that I hardly think I can read it again, at least for a very long while.
[End of 2018 Update] I kept my words, I read it again today. It's Ono that's still a puzzle to me, or he is quite unexplored (maybe intentionally by the mangaka). And I still disagree with his treatment towards the end.
And before I forgot, this manga development is real good. REAL life stuff (some can be compared while others I've yet to experience/observe/witness to have a say) with the good and not-so-good stuff. The latter included muddled, full of confusing and contradicting events. At the end of the day, there's grow and clarification. The communication in this is quite good too: both inner-self and between/among individuals.

Through my excursions of trying to look for non-yaoi/hentai/smut shotacon manga, I was able to discover this one, and I have to say it's one of the best I'm reading. Bitou Lollipop is seriously a must-read. Although it's pretty obvious who the main girl Madoka is going to end up with, you can't help but want to read the whole manga because of the great story-line and that you really want to see the development that happens between character.. The art is also eye-appealing in my opinion. Bitou Lollipop is manga that has it's reader excited to flip every page as it's filled with humorous moments that you burst in laughter, and also has it's readers feel for each character whether it be hate or love. Please read!
