Enjoyable, but not transcendent

Yeah, everything is in the title, this novel is not that great, but I still enjoy reading it. It's a guilty pleasure for me smile

I tried reading it after I saw its popularity, and I was told I would get a cool badass smart MC.

Well. The MC may seem cool to many other reviewers, but I don't like him that much. All the ladies fall for him for no other real reason other than he's strong/plot, he gets strong because of a cheat (this trope is kinda overused and meh at best), he quickly becomes a ruthless killer parting from his gentle way ( which I liked ): He gets trouble pretty much everytime because he's a dick who only think about getting stronger (he got tons of enemies by now).

Then about some other things that bother me : the writer is kinda sexist (pretty much the same with most Chinese novels, female have to be protected by the strong male ...) and the story kinda repeats in a cycle of "MC get enemies" "MC get lucky treasure" "MC has a breakthrough" "MC trash everyone". Not much variation. I guess I can forgive the writer because he's writing a fuckton in a very small timeframe.

TL;DR : Novel is good as an introduction to the genre and very enjoyable to read, but no real deep stuff here.

Coolest Hero Ever.
by Hailboy

The protagonist of this novel is exceptional. Whether it is manga or novel, Usually in every story the quality of the protagonists are kind of same. Some are man of women, Some are heroic again Some are justice freak. If you are bored with these common theme of protagonists then this novel is a change of taste for you. The protagonist of this novel suffers from many depravity and undergoes a great change of character but unlike common knowledge where the protagonist becomes dark and kind of evil, he becomes rather cool. The protagonist of this novel is just like a wind who comes and goes without any warning. Sometimes he becomes a tornado that rises above the heaven again he disappears without a trace. He can't be bound just like the wind. He comes, impresses people, makes bond with them but before gets bound he disappears just as he appeared out of no where. He is just like a star up high in the sky whom one can see and appreciate for sometime only to lose again. This novel lacks in romantic elements but it is its greatest charm. There are so many romantic novel out there that the theme of romance itself has become boring. The hero of this novel is an eccentric. These uncommon qualities makes the hero of this novel the coolest hero ever.

I have to say that this is definitely one of the best Xianxia's I've come across in a while.

Story: 10/10 (Alluring, interesting, and hilarious at times.)
Main Character: 10/10 (Who doesn't love an underdog who speaks their mind.)
Characters: 10/10 (Especially Lord Fifth haha)
Translation: 10/10 (Deathblade is very reliable and consistent with his updates.)

Guts(the guy below me) has it right. This is one of the best xianxia out there. If only there was some more romance it could be my #1. Unfortunately it seems this author follows the japanese shounen route where the main character is a eunuch. There is some romance but its only developed far a few chapters every 300 chapters. Also in my opinion a harem is a must lol, I take points off for that.
Other than that the story is great, starts out slow, almost dropped it around 150, it was ok but was reading others more interesting and I wasnt liking the goody2shoes eunuch mc, fortunately I didnt drop it and kept going to 200. The story picks up immensely after that, the story takes completely unexpected turns and the author always manages to keep you guessing what the fuck is going to happen next. The cultivation and fighting methods change too with each new rank of cultivation which I find really interesting, I also didnt like the whole flying sword thing at the start. The comedy picks up too, you will laugh you ass off from time to time. This is definitely the most unique novel I have read. To give you a small taste of what I mean, right now where I am, they are fighting with pokemons on steroids, who knows what will happen next. I cant wait to see. P.S. Forgot to mention that the translator is hands down the best novel translator out there. Translations are top notch and worthy of support.

Romance is ISSTH main flaw

@ Avarrencus. I would say that romance is this one is worth of only 4/10. I think its the only major weakness - romantic heroines and their relationship with MC is nor properly built. I dont think the author can write anything really romantic even if his life depended on it.

Read Against The Gods or others if you want actually well enough developed romance. But as I said I think romance is ISSTH main flaw. Other than that its a really great and fun story. Starts up real slow but gets better and better eventually.

And yes Lord Fifth is worth of 99999/10 just like Ultimate Vexation is worth 333/10.

Ultimate Vexation! Please convert this bully!

I do believe you are misinterpreting the term "Smart Protagonist" in this case (or the term could be changed but its good enough lol); Meng Hao is quite smart but more than that, he is Deep and Enlightening. What he says, on whim on Author, can make one ponder about one's life, so Meng Hao is "Smart" (I'm confident there's evidence of him actually being smart in whatever sense you are thinking of though)

The issues of using too much pills only occurs in the 1st book when Meng Hao is a scrub -_-. Hehh, obviously you didnt read too far or just chose to ignore the later chapters about hardwork. You also nicely forget that Meng Hao finds this awesome relic/artifact that lets him exchange money for duplication of pills, making them not-so-rare (if you have unlimited "Rare Candies", why the hell wont you use em?) Offf couuurse, these pills are shiet when you get stronger sooo... Why you acting like they End-Game pills?

Meng Hao is not complex? Go read to latest chapter! In 10 different languages! Orders from Ultimate Vexation! There is a difference between a Static and Dynamic character: the later meaning constantly changing, which, if you read to the latest, you can absolutely agree that Meng Hao is.

The values thing.... In RL, I can certainly see people following values... BAD ONES! I can't help but feel you are a bit too naive about people since truly good people are in the minority (by which I mean they are on the Post-conventional Level of Morality) buuuut why are we talking about RL? Meng Hao was introduced into a new world, where he could gain everything he desires with hardwork, massive luck, and talent but lose it all in a snap. He has nothing in the mortal world and he has nothing in the Xian xia world; the only difference is he has a chance for change in the later and there is no other options (become strong or die like shiet in the beginning) Only the strong can show values like Confucius', otherwise they'd die. Meng Hao changed from the scholar for the bad but if given the chance, he'll reveal profound thoughts. "Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself?" Trust me when I say this but there are a LOT of cocky assholes in ISSTH, ALL of which would love to rob Meng Hao blind. Bitch-Slaps are essential. Meanwhile, I have not seen a single critical character that was abused/etc. by Meng Hao UNREASONABLY. "Show Family Loyalty?" Uhh well he'd love to but theys dead. What you expect is a pure nice guy. Wrong genre to even have such expectations. I will say this; if you have the galaxy tattooed on your ass, it certainly is more complex than Meng Hao

Your issue with the constant power ups, stronger enemies, etc, exist in most conflict/fighting-focused works of fiction. You can complain about that, but then, I'd like to know why are you reading this and looking for any Xian xia works? Cuz its good and you know you love it. "Overused" things like the level determinant?... No words, too tired, plz, Ultimate Vexation. Go read "Destruction Flag Otome," that was friggin funny and pretty good.

You uhh, said you expected good world building and a epic saga? Go read up to the latest... Lemme break it down for you, typically, theres something called a Climax, which is what you want. Before that though, theres also something called the Rising Action to build hype. Even before that however, is something called E X P O S I T I O N. I can see you read up to the expostion and thatsss about it. Complaints? Well, I'd have a complaint if I watched an action movie but decided to only watch the talking scenes. I'd also have a complaint when Im called a jackass for doing so, though it'd be unreasonable for having that complaint in the first place.

On the thing about Flawless and Perfect being the same, it's not. Flawless is the best Humans/Martial Artists can do without angering the Heavens while Perfect is truly perfect, which should be impossible to attain (if you do, you'll be smited by the Heavens).

Omg omg this dudeee, use artifacts like never before? Blah blah, blah blah blah? GO READ THE SHIT! Lightning. Badass. The Heavens. Read. Now. Gah. Uop. Cave man talk. Just. Do it.

This guy's complains reeks of "I havent read this story for shit"

Ah that confirmed it, he/she literally read the 1st chapter of the second book before judgement. Welp. Ultimate Vexation, if you will~

Don't mind JetGT's comment, he is just a noob. =)

Really good novel, interesting plot. Well developped with good setting, good twist and many surprises and originalities. I like how the author make a come back with old characters, items, mysteries later in stories. The best novel ever.

"There is a huge turtle in space at the end of the first book. Hilarious? Yep. Made sense in the context of the story? Hell no"

Of course there have, that's why it's interesting but if you can't understand it's your problem and when you talk about plot armor.. didn't you find it really stupid what you said? it's the same thing to said "why a MC live?" to every novels. Don't tell me you think that there have any plot armor in other novels?

Alright, what with the lies in the reviews?

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I was looking about for a good Xian Xia or Wuxia. Friends recommended it when I asked about a good world building and epic saga. XianXia/Wuxia seems to be very very long, chapters numbering in the thousands on average.

Smart MC? Not true. He's cunning - yes, but that is because everyone else is so dumb. If you put an idiot in a class of retards, does that make him smart? Hell no. He is more intelligent than average MC, that is for sure, but I wouldn't called him smart. Why? There are so many ideal opportunity he misses. If he really is smart as you all says, he should have notices those opportunities or at least made comment or references to them. Situations he got in and out of is more or less plot armors. So he is only smart when the plot needs progression?

A little annoyance of mine is stuffs given on a silver platter just because he is the MC. It is something I despise the most in any fiction. The MC works for his progression? So Meditating in a cave and swallowing EXP pills calls hard works? Am I missing something here? When did hard work, work beyond your limit, with blood and sweat each day, exhausting yourself to the point of death to just gain that extra level has been reduced to this?

When I first read one of the Xian Xia novels, I thought the EXP pills was just a plot device for that particular novel, but every freaking novels so far has them as a mean for progression. These things are a cheat. You don't train with them - you mediate with them. You don't break sweat with them. All you need is swallowing tonnes of these, and how absurd they appears despite their incredibly rare status is just mind boggling.

Complex characterization? Lol - he is as complex as a white piece of paper with some winkles. There is no dot on the paper for me to focus on so my eyes wandered just like the MC until someone write something on it to define him.

The MC was a scholar, who as far as I understand, follows Confucius. It implied he is a great follower to the point that he failed the imperial examination because he got no one to rely to. It wasn't due to his lack of wisdom or knowledge. Cool. That great. He's an underdog? Yet, as the story progress, he spits on Confucius values the moment he gained status in the world of cultivation. His rapid changes of values wasn't a problem at first, but how he went from A to C, skipping B in matters of few paragraph of expositions. It made me cringe. This guy just swing to whatever wind blows at him, are you fucking kidding me? Real people do not do that. They holds onto their values, and true heroes, despite adversity, will not throw away their values they gain throughout their early life. Complex? My ass is more complex.

Another problem with this story, and probably Xian Xia in general is: Monster on top of monsters. No matter how powerful you get, there will always be someone more powerful than you. I get that. MC need something to strive for, but Xian Xia upped it to eleven. How to sound more epic? Add more insane godly character into the scene, only have them killed by even more insane godly characters who appears because the plot called for it. Their arrogance so overshadowed the protagonist's one that you immediately root for the protagonist because you lack the brain to remember what he just did a few pages ago. Lol

Power level up is a joke. Not that it didn't make sense, it's the way it was handled. Qi Cultivation is the lowest form of level just like in every Xian Xia. It's like a universal thing. Let's say this Qi Cultivation is level 1 to 99 if it was an RPG game. Easy to understand right? Everyone play RPG at least once in their life.

So being level 1, fighting against level 99 = instant suicide, but if you got good items, potions, armors and weapons, used your turn correctly, a level 80 can beat a level 99. If you got shitty items, you just need potions - lots of potions. Attack, endure retaliation, drink potion, and repeat. It's painfully slow, but you can take down a boss type monster this way. So in this story, the MC... oh wait, it's exactly like that? Is this a game? No matter how much the MC get injured, he will be up and running about in a few line of exposition.

Getting to level 99 is an impressive feat, but wait. There is a legendary level 100! It will takes you years and years of hard work, training, blood and sweat - or swallow these pill and sit in a cave. You don't need to eat, shit or sleep. Just sit in the cave while I exposition your progress. Pretty much.

And once the MC reached level 100. His level reset to 0 and he needed to reach level 99 again, just on a new playing field. I like the Qi Cultivation idea because it gives good indication of how powerful the MC can be, but overused is bad - is very bad!

My initial understand when reading the story was: Qi Cultivation, reaching level 9, then form Dao Pillars then Core Formation, then Nascant Soul, then Spirit Severing, then something, then something, then something, you become Immortal. Cool. Pretty straight forwards. Easy to understand, right? As the story progress, each stage after Qi Cultivation expanded more and becomes even more draggy, to the point that each stage is the same as the previous one, just with a different name.

Qi Cultivation - 9 level with legendary 10 to 13 levels.
Foundation Formations (Dao Pillar) - You don't have one, you have 9. They comes one at a time, with a slice of fractured, cracked, flawless and perfect. Ummmm.... isn't that the same as previous one?

At which point, the story stated there were several stages of Spirit Severing... so basically endless leveling until the author decided to fuck it and give the MC all the power boosts he needed?

Each stages has nine levels with legendary 4 levels that no one seems to reach, which our MC will reach because he got plot armor. I don't know about you guys, but I hate reading rehashed stuff in the same story. Training phrase is fun in the beginning, but strategic phrase should start afterwards. Use what you have to beat up opponents that more powerful than you. Using artifacts in ways that no one else thought of.

In fact, the MC went from stage 10 to 13 of Qi Cultivation in matters of chapter. One chapter in fact, and I'm going to guess that he's going to go from somehow fractured foundation to perfect foundation in a very shot amount of time? Hacks much? That brought me to my Ex Machina point, which underplay badly in the reviews.

Holy shit, there are so much in here that it aren't funny at all. Lacking resources to cheat your way into next level of Qi Cultivation? Here is a mirror that duplicate stuff at an insane reduced price. Lacking godlike weapons? Here is a sword that can steal Qi from other people, which you definitely won't abuse - no, scrub that, here's another one, because what better than having one legendary? Having two legendary! You can steal people's hard earned work at a double rate, you douche bag. Needed Spirit Stone to exchange for all these godly items? Here's a mountain worth of them. Oh, don't worry, when you run out, I'm sure you will find an ocean worth of them with little effort.

Yeah, bullshit that this story isn't full of hacks.

Sighed. I don't want to spend pointless words describing how misleading the reviews in this section are. This MC is pretty much like every other MC. Just because he got a little cunning, it doesn't mean he a smart MC. Show is intellect through his actions with interesting twist and turn. He barely worked for any of his power up, and you guys are so blinded to that simply because he is called the MC. He can cheat and hacked his way into godhood, but when someone else does it, that person is evil? It's like Naruto versus Sasuke. Hypocrite much?

And what bothered me is the MC's flipping personalities. Depends on the situation, his personality could do a total 180. Basically: "I will not kill unless the plot demands it." After committing sins, he will explain why he did it and reverted back to his more usual self. A few chapters later, it was never mentioned again.

Meh. Entertaining - very, but shitty story is still shitty. You can watch mindless TV shows for hours on end. It doesn't mean the story isn't stupid. Honestly, I enjoyed it for the first book, but randomness at the end (turtle in space) made me dropped it. No, I'm not kidding. There is a huge turtle in space at the end of the first book. Hilarious? Yep. Made sense in the context of the story? Hell no. Then book 2 starts with him basically rehashed of him at gaining his first Qi Cultivation Level. It just called Foundation Formation now.
