Divided opinions.

There seem to be quite a few negative reviews for this manga. Well, I liked it enough to defend it. It's realistic. Relationships are like this. Things bug you but you don't say anything, people cheat, love erodes, we move on. I think people are taking a very critical view of Sousuke in regards to his actions, and I admit that could have been better portrayed. But I do think that there are a lot of people who perhaps are weak or too kind for their own good, and end up succumbing; in that way, I think he is quite realistic. The mangaka was looking for a way for a good guy to be tempted by someone else, and it made sense to me that he was drawn into it that way.

The only thing I didn't like as much was the ending.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Inaba marrying his girlfriend was very stupid. To the point of me thinking, "what the hell?!" Perhaps the mangaka needed the wedding to bring all the characters together for closure, but honestly I think that was unnecessary in itself. Also, I was disappointed that Sousuke himself did not seem to make any progress by the end, still being in love with Ari. I'm not sure why that bothered me so much. Perhaps I felt that in moving on from her he would have shown that he'd accepted the breakdown of their relationship was his fault. Or something.

But I think it was pretty good, it's refreshing after reading a lot of other manga to get to something that tries to be more realistic.

Well, okay, so maybe I shouldn't even be rating this because I've always hated (okay, maybe not hated, but strongly disliked) Yoshizumi-sensei's works. They were always too shoujoish and her lead characters are waaaaay too ... ANNOYING! (hell, Marmalade Boy is one of the few I dislike less, although that is only thanks to secondary characters like Arimi or Satoshi, because as far as I'm concerned, Miki, Ginta and Yuu can all pretty much go... well, whatever, I'm not a fan).

Still, I read them all. Why? Because her art is so insanely gorgeous and her stories all sound so promising that I can't help thinking she just may surprise me (she almost did with Mint Na Bokura... except I hated Maria... and every guy who fell for her).

And so I read this too. MISTAKE. BIIIIIG MISTAKE.

Now, don't misunderstand. The reason I don't like this manga isn't because the guy was unfaithful or because they didn't get back together - Nana is one of my all time favorites (Shouji <3 <3), and even though he's a right little piece of scum, I still love Sho from Skip Beat!... I mean, cheating and hurting and breaking up are all things that happen in real life, it's normal, and I hate super clichéd manga anyway.

But... The way the whole story was told was just... bad. First of all, it felt incredibly rushed. Of course, still better like this than the same, repetitive, clichéd plot repeating for 8 whole volumes like Random Walk... but still. Even that ending, what was up with that? One page just blurting everything out, you don't actually feel as much of that character development she was trying to push as one would expect. Is Sousuke really sorry? Does Ari even like this Shiroi guy? And the best friend marrying the girlfriend out of pity? That's sad. And what's even sadder is that everybody is so accepting of it.

So, yeah, I think the story is told really badly. As if that weren't enough, the main characters (hell, ALL of the characters. This is probably Yoshizumi's only manga where I haven't found ONE character I liked!! The only candidate would've been Remi but she pretty much disappears soon so you can't really grow attached to her) SUCK!! Ari's so freaking indecisive and submissive! I mean, really! Tell the guy what you want, for God's sake! (hopefully she's gotten a bit better by the end of the manga, but the ending was so rushed it was hard to tell). And Sousuke? I really can't stand him! Hey, I didn't like Shouji cheating on Hachi with Sachiko, but at least he'd FALLEN for her! But Sousuke? His explanation of everything was, "She was about to cry, I didn't have a choice." Hello?!?!? What kind of reasoning is that?? What if she told you to kill your own wife or she'd start crying... would you do that?!?! Oh, really. If he were at least convinced of what he was doing I may have found it more tolerable, but he was just dragged along. Hell, both, the main characters were dragged along. They just passively watched everything happening around them, not making any decisions or anything. Going with the flow.

The chick, forgot her name, she's exactly like Suzu from Marmalade Boy, except Yuu had more backbone that this Sousuke guy. The best friend? Reminded me of Satoshi, I thought I was gonna like him, but I was thoroughly disappointed with the ending. Other than his relationship with Tomoka, I guess he was kinda decent.

Anyway, I thought I'd never be able to find a Yoshizumi manga I liked worse than Random Walk but--- well, okay, maybe I still hate Random Walk a bit more (0 character development there, about 0.5 here; 8 volumes of torture vs 1 volume....) but still. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Not my cup of tea...

I've loved Yoshizumi's other works, so I thought that this one would be awesome too; I was wrong. It started out sweet and went downhill from there. Now, I do love romance and the idea of being with the one you love forever, and that may have influenced my rating. But, it still left me feeling incomplete.

The following spoiler reveals the ending, so only read if you don't care.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Sousuke going on a date with his student was a stupid idea and bad, but to some people, (not including myself), forgivable. Turning his phone off was a worse idea. Kissing her was the deal breaker. Now, if things had ended at that, I could maybe forgive him, but he just had to go and have a relationship with this girl. People blame Ari, saying that it's not all Sousuke's fault, but I think he deserved it. I liked them together, and kind of wished that they would've stayed together, but this incident made me dislike him. And, in the end, I really did want them to get back together, even though I agreed with them breaking up... It left me undecided and just unhappy.

So, all in all, I don't recommend this manga. If you want to read it that bad, just read the first chapter, because that is actually good. It felt incomplete and left a bad after-taste. I know it is supposed to be realistic, but it was too far-fetched to be real. She had a good story, and ruined it.

I am genuinely surprised that this is categoried as josei; this still has a feeling of shoujo around....his (?) usual style, I have to admit. I'm with people who said josei isn't his forte....

Granted, he did deconstruct everyone; the naive hopeful shoujo heroine and her cheerful easygoing boyfriend, his loyal, pining, protective best friend who's in love with her.... and it's indeed realistic; but realistically, painfully stupid. It's great they all grow up for the better (except the best friend; WTF, Yoshizumi? Or indeed, Japan? there's second chance, there's omiai, and there's marriage out of pity. It's DIFFERENT </rant>)

But getting through the end is a pain by itself. So yeah, I'm not looking for realistic depiction of a stupid relationship.

And the summary above is misleading, in some ways. I'm expecting a more slice-of-life feel from this manga.

More real than a lot of other manga

I like it, it’s quite a realistic representation of how relationships work.
I also like the way peer pressure is shown, all the characters constantly changing their minds – marry him, forgive him, break up with him! It truly is a bitter sweet story love story and I recommend it to anyone that wants to read a (mostly) credible romance that hasn’t got a ‘love conquers all’ theme.

To the comments below saying that this manga is bad because this doesn't project a romance well and that the plot shouldn't go the way it did, well then you guys don't have any idea how it is in real life. Men cheat, women cheat. They still stay together because of whatever reasons. All these things HAPPEN, it's crap but it happens. Simply because we're humans and have the tendencies to make the stupidest mistakes.

I personally think that this is the best manga by Yoshizumi Wataru-sensei, and I agree with a comment below that the mangaka has matured. Her maturity reflects well in this manga. A 10!

The thing is that any unrest in any relationship is only due to cheating in YW's diary...
...I agree with leecherboy that Josei isnt the mangaka's forte- she might be more easy going than some other shoujo mangakas but ..
Spoiler (highlight to view)
I find it really odd that a young man in a relationship with a young woman would find a whinny high schooler attractive in any way except sex.. because immaturity usually strikes first..he won't just fall into something like that..if obsessive dedication would get you an older guy, man, that would make a lot more women's jobs easier.....

Well worth the read. Not a love story but a LIFE story.

Now hang on, I understand why other ppl didn't rate this manga so highly. But I think it's actually a very good study of infidelity and what sorts of people engage in it and why. I mean it's realistic. Of course it's an upsetting theme but I think it's done really well here without some of the extra unrealistic drama that sometimes accompanies cheating in shoujo mangas. This is just... heartbreaking in a quiet way but I really like the ending, I think it was just right and I liked how all the characters had grown and matured by the end. It actually managed to leave me with a feeling of hope instead of despair. People grow and can leave their sorrowful pasts behind. That's what's wonderful about life - you keep on living, and then things get better. Even if you've been through hell before... You can always grow out of it, and life does get better, and you do find happiness. I like that side of the story. (Note that this is not really a spoiler because I'm not giving away HOW the heroine finds happiness lol. Or with whom.)

This is how life sometimes is. Ain't perfect but it is what it is. I like the fact that this is a josei "romance" manga that actually chose to confront such a realistic and serious topic without trying to dress it up or glamorize it or smuttify it or make excuses for it. Just a plain, believable and therefore sympathetic story about a young woman and a bad experience she had with romance, which might become just another memory - neither good nor bad - for her in the future. This is how life is! I've been through something similar to her, so I really do think this manga is realistic in its depiction of human folly without trying to demonize anyone.

I recommend this to readers who are looking for a change from the candy-sweet, sugar-coated, unrealistically perfect shoujo romances. Nobody (or hardly anybody) has a perfect life in which they have one true love that is also their first love and that lasts forever. Most people ride the merry-go-round a couple of times before finding "the one". This manga is a depiction of one of those rides on the merry-go-round of self-delusion, betrayal and hope that a young woman goes through in normal modern life. Many women will have an experience like this in their pasts. That's what makes this manga realistic and that's why I like it. smile

Edit: Wanted to respond to the observations of some of the other reviewers below claiming that the mangaka may be losing her touch. I disagree. I think she's maturing because she's able to draw more realistic and less "perfect" relationships. Another reviewer said the mangaka must be broken-hearted, well maybe. Certainly this kind of maturity comes with experience. I like sweet love stories but I think it's good to have a bitter coffee now and then to freshen a mature palate. And "Cappuccino" is that kind of story - bitter and it wakes you up to the realities of modern romance, not the foggy dreams of pubescent girls. True love is still possible - even very probable - but chances are that you'll encounter "false love" many times or at least once or twice before finding your true love that you can stay with for life. Just saying. I think the mangaka has matured and improved to be able to write such a realistic story. That said I can understand some readers' disappointment because the summary is totally misleading. o_0; Like I said before I don't think this really counts as a love story, I mean it has love in it but it's more than two people getting together, this is a LIFE story. I wouldn't market it as a love story because that builds up readers' expectations in a way that this manga can't deliver on. Lol. It's just another kind of life story, not a love story. I don't think the summary should call it that.

i like marmalade boy so I was really looking forward to a good ending. I don't know but maybe wataru-sensei is brokenhearted or sumthing. all her recent works were sad, although there are still that reality type of genre... its just... not inspiring at all... we are supposed to be inspired by romance stories to fall in love right? What the f*** is with that story?! cheating and all that and with a student to boot! Bleh! I hate those kind of stories...

I really enjoyed reading this manga. I was not fond of the ending, but I am a true romantic afterall. In some ways the ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, in other ways it suits the story well.
