This is one of the best manga I've ever read. Seriously. It's AWESOME. You may be turned off by the gore, fantastical plot, and stark drawing style, but don't be. Give it a chance, and Dorohedoro will blow your socks off.
Kaiman and Nikaido's friendship is heartwarming, Noi and Shin's relationship is adorable, and En is just a badass. Also, Fujita is the best character ever. He's hands down my favorite. <3
DEFINITELY at least give it a try through the first five chapters!

I don' know what genre is it...You know Hellsing, Blame, Furi-kuri. Put together this and you get some ideas what it is.
Fantastic until the ending arc.

Other reviews have covered the general idea of the manga so I won't talk about that.
The pacing is near perfect for most of the read. Its confident enough to not rush itself, but it gives new information and builds characters quickly enough that there never is a feeling of stagnation.
The art is wonderful throughout. Gritty and rough and totally unique. The only issue is that the faces are often drawn in an oddly simplistic manner which can contrast in a poor way with the rest of the art.
The comedy is spot on. No generic boke + tsukkomi ad nauseum here. What little of that style that is present is done very well, and the rest of the comedy is far more original and its just really funny.
The characters are wonderful. Well realized and multifaceted across the board they're possibly the best cast assembled in a manga.
The fanservice is plentiful, but frankly I could never find it at all arousing. Its just not very impactful.
The manga runs into a wall at the end, however. The pacing slows to a crawl as the writer tries to tie up all loose ends at once and struggles to spin all the plates of separate character arcs ending at the same time. The more serious tone that was built up over the entire rest of the manga starts to give way to an awkwardly light-hearted and comedic tone at the worst possible times. The wind gets sucked out of the story's sails and what should be climactic moments feel generally lackluster.
The finale itself is good and brings the story to a satisfying and enjoyable close, but that last arc leaves a bad taste in one's mouth despite the greatness that came before it.

I gave this manga a try long ago, and gave up quickly. But then I went back after coming across some recommendations, and am so glad I did. This is one of my all time favorite mangas. After getting past this first few chapters, I couldn't put it down and was hugely addicted.
Pros: This is the cleverist of clever manga out there. It has an original story and great character development. I love the strange artwork with the masks, and the odd world grew on me. You end up liking the good guys as much as the bad guys, and good luck figuring out who which side the characters are on. It draws you in completely, which makes it a solid 10.
Cons: I wish the releases werent so slow in coming out. Meanwhile I guess I will have to re-read it, and will probably pick up on things I didn't the first time. It's not hard to enjoy the story, but some things arent obvious so Wikipedia helped me to fill in some concepts I didn't get at first.

The discription is really sucks. Well, as i understand there are two worlds(places)-where magic users live and live others(city). Magic users come to city to practice there skills. It's not usual magic-it usually some kind of smoke(gas) that they can use for make door in another world or transform somebody in bug(painfully) or mushrooms(dead instantly) for example, Well, and half of the city are this kind of mutants. Somebody transform the head of main hero into lizard-head, but he don't remember who did it, because he remember only last year of his life. He kill all magic users and seek who transormed his head. The author posses unique style of drawing-i didn't see anothing similar to it. The world is unique and very interesting too. Every hero is wonderful, Author show life not only main heros but also there opponents(50-50%). And you begin to love them all, but they will fight without hesitation. It is wonderful, sometimes little cruel, sometimes very funny manga.

Despite how chaotic each of the characters were, there seems to be law in those chaos
I cant fathom how much love the author put into each of the characters and its great
The manga started like i guess 20 years ago? that explains the bit messy drawing at the start aand the drawings are still great

Its different from other typical mangas.
Initially the story is a mess but as the clues start to gather along with the summary after each chapter, things start to make sense. For the art style one gets used to it plus The physical volumes have better image quality and are in English. BUT i prefered the fan scanlations as the translations seemed more natural over The "literature" english in official version.

First things first, if you're wondering either you should read it or not the answer is : absolutely ! But please don't search "dorohedoro" on google, you'll be welcomed with pictures of its anime adaptation which has a terrible (AWFUL) style and blatant amount of colors. This manga has a dark universe yet is humorous when called for, you'll find yourself getting attached to any of the side character, the story will make you question your sense of good and evil and I've yet to find a manga i'm so attached to.

If you love shounen, you will love this manga because at its core it is very wholesome and full of characters that try their very very best for their 'nakama'! Friendship is very central in the relationships between the characters, also loyalty and responsibility towards people who depend on you. There are also no overt romance but the deep bond between the male and female here is actually more profound. You could just have your own head cannon for some of the pairs here.
The characters are all strong in their prowess and their conviction. Even the weakest physically is the one that actually give the biggest impact. In the end, actually a character we never notice the one that deal a very heavy blow towards the Big Bad. You will love every single characters in this manga due their good points - including the Big Bad, in a way he is cute and noble due to his reason to live. And they are all comic in their own way, giving the readers great laugh at their individual unique antics. My favorite is Chidaruma, he always do whatever the heck he want to amuse himself, and I think he's the most pitiable of them all.
The gore here is beautiful, as with all the 'messy' art. If you cannot stand sketch-like art you may not like it but I find their messiness add dimension and depth towards the tone of the manga. However, if you really really like guro you might find its a bit lacking because blood and guts is not actually the center and the fetish for sensei unlike in other mangaka art like KAGO Shintaro.
If you love Franken Fran and any ITOU Junji you will love this.
