Kurôzu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the world. It manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. And in large ways: the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurôzu-cho are pulled ever deepe... More...

or please read the manga first. Some important things, and the ending in the movie were changed, so not to go into detail, the movie was good until the boyfriend turned into an evil worm and tried to kill the main character, etc. Not something that even closely happened in the manga
The manga was pretty amazing though, it was the first Junji Ito i'd read, and I am still a huge fan. Awesome art and strange and good storyline, and good ending.

Definitely disturbing and horror-filled, in a good way if you're really into that kind of manga. I wasn't, but I still found it very interesting. It was still too depressing for me though. I would have liked it if at least ONE person was said to have survived. And by the third volume just looking at the spiral-y drawings made my head hurt. Scary!!!

it is not great, it is not special. i wont feel sorry if anyone hate it or anything. i enjoyed it enough to finish it. it was wierd and bizzare experince. was it scary? nope. creepy? a little. i just wanted to see wh it will go. the ending was underwhelming but then i realized the ending dont matter. the show mosly foucs on tellinga theme. there is something greater than you and you cant control it, and it is hard to escape from it. the manga is stupid and silly sometimes but that is also what makes it more theway it is. it felt like the mangaka didnt careabout flawsand was just intrested into showing off his creativity andstory. he reminds me of go negai's devilman. the characters are simple and not good. the story was heavily plot driven.

Uzumaki is not exactly what I'd consider horror. Like the reader below said, it was more shocking than anything. I also wondered why the people in the town never tried to abandon it in the first two volumes, but you see exactly why they couldn't near the end of volume 3 even if they tried, so...
Speaking of volume three, let me warn any and all potential readers that you may become a little (or in my case, a lot) frustrated with this volume. TBH, the mangaka just seemed to have thrown a bunch of crap together in order to make for a quick wrap up. I was, to say the least, let down in the biggest way. Yeah...it sucked reading it. Also, some rather important events are never fully explained (if even at all), and that annoyed me, too.
On the plus side though, for those of you who are familiar with Ito's work, you know that the guy has a rather macabre sense of humor, so there were actually some eerily funny moments in there as well. I laughed almost as much as I said "WTF? O__o??" while reading this. Also, his artwork is horrifyingly beautiful, as usual, and the overall theme is rather solid. It does feel like a series of one shots, but that was cool. It kind of reads like "Mimi's Ghost Stories," so I didn't mind that.
Overall, this series was pretty good. Not his best work (some of his one shots are amazing), but still pretty good.

It wasn't really horror-it was more of the shock (or rather, aftershock) of the entire thing. The spirals and how everyone becomes spirals in the end is the shocking part-the morphing, and the result. It was still clever, though, although it was repetitive for a while. The random ongoings and spirals which popped up somehow or another made it interesting.
How Shuichi's parents were the first to get it is interesting-and in the end, how he was the last one-quite tied up the whole thing. And also...the ending-if everyone became a spiral (or somewhat tangled as one) in the end, what about the guy in the end who cleared the corpses off the road? He was human, not spiral.
I'm wondering...if they had eloped earlier, would they have managed to escape the spirals?!

To be honest - I hate it when manga starts good, gets better with each chapter, then ends like shit.
The first two volumes were really great. Mangaka's ideas were really nice, the art was AWESOME and this whole spiral thing - great. But then, the third volume comes and it screwes everything. The last chapters were so stupid, I almost had tears in my eyes.
And, seriosuly - this girl experienced so many strange and horrible events and she didn't even try to run away from this town, but instead just went calmly to school, spend time with family etc? Wth?
But despite all disadvantages, I really liked it, it almost deserves to be my fav horror manga. Well, almost +damn third volume!+. As said before, the art was amazing and you can really feel scared, especially when you're reading it alone at night~

The story 3/5 : It was really good and scary but some things were not fully explained, like why did this town become cursed, and the ending was not good.
The only characters you're going to care about are the protagonists, all most all side characters
the art 5/5 : beautiful and very realistic, the panels were easy to follow and they show every detailed move, unlike some other mangas were some moves appear out of nowhere *cough naruto cough*.
My only complain is the ending

One of my favorite manga, not because it was scary but more like it was a bunch of lulz. Yeah, the first 2 chapters were pretty awesome and horror worthy, but after that IT. IS. A BUNCH. OF. LULZ.
I'm seriously laughing my butt off just remembering this manga and the last time I read it was more than a year ago.
Horror or Comedy, either way it was a definite page turner. And Junji Ito's art is gorgeous, really worth it.
