Yet another Gary Sue story that gets showered with unending praise for something only those who praise seem to be able to recognize.
Loser in our world dies, reincarnates in a swords-and-magic world with his memories/knowledge fully intact and proceeds to become a magical wielding savant on account of the fact that hes a 30-something year old in a 3-year old's body. Yes, thats right, he is self-teaching himself water magic at the age of 3. Before hes age 10, hes already surpassed his Elven magical tutor and by that point I stopped reading.
If I was told that this was originally a fanfic with some key words identifying the source material removed, I would have believed it.

like the tittle state this novel is not for every one . i would highly recommend this series because of the story and how author craft every character.( i do wish for more chapter on how the another character view of thing ) . this is the story of change, the MC change form a closed closet jerk into an

I've been on-off reading this to and from school on my bus every day. It's been a decently enjoyable. The story generally stayed that way, for the beginning at least. In the latter volumes of the book, to put it bluntly, sh*t hits the fan.
Not trying to spoil no too much, but what happens is a plot-twist without much foreshadowing, which I generally don't like. But the actual potential plot brought on by this plot twist more than makes up for the unfairness of it being sprung up out of the blue.

Damn this novel is killing me, gotta stop pulling all nighters to read and finish my work, think the last time i was so engrossed was vinland saga

The plot is awesome and the pacing is smooth. It starts off really slow and doesnt rush anything. its built very patiently until it just explodes in the later volumes. There are some chapters just about life, but thats just the calm before the storm
There's lots of comedy and some tearjerking tragic moments too
I just have one big problem: cant decide between charmander, squirtle and bulbasaur ;_;
finally up to date, cant wait for new volume

this light novel was a surprise, was getting kind of jaded about the general quality of novels since there's just so much cringeworthy stuff out there
then BAM MUSHOKU TENSEI! its like a treasure hoard of interesting dialogue and epic fantasy.
in a similar way to Re:Monster, the MC is reborn as a child but hes not an orc bent on eating his way to max super saiyan 4. the guy actually has a personality that you can believe in with ordinary emotions. the new world is waaaay entrenched in japanese culture and its funny how he keeps trying to separate japanese logic from his new life. the action parts are also written very well without over exaggeration, the magic and swords system + monsters etc. mesh well together without making your brain ache with contradictions
the romance is a teenage wet dream come true, but the somewhat unique thing is the author makes the harem actually work. the girls have personality rather than being what the author calls "satellites" revolving around the MC, they develop a history together and for the longest time, its just teasing and nothing happens. the slow moving and gradual merging of their lives is gratifying if you enjoy that type of romance.
however if you're a milis believer (aka one love one life), stay away. you will be irreversibly seduced by the fatal temptation of "3P" you have been warned!
but best of all, there's a lot of semi life lessons mixed into many chapters that give you a feeling of what family and friendship mean, especially to someone like the MC who was secluded. it feels like the author is often writing with his targeted audience being NEETs. the mc says all of it from a non judgemental tone, so you're free to take from it what you will
read it you'll love it, but check the tags first though (HAREM + MATURE + SEINEN). i dunno how so many reviewers come to throw dirt because they can't stand a pedo joke, don't like harems or like the guy below, want a superhero MC who has to be the strongest in a world where the plot moves linearly (beat bad guy 1, beat bad guy 2 who's stronger, beat the gods and so on until you wonder what's the point of even reading)

It's strange how so many people love this novel and how many people hate it. Anyways since enough people praise this novel here's the problems I have with it. I have read 170 chapters and really had to wonder why I'd bother.
Incest and harems
1. The 1st person he sleeps with is his cousin Eris Boreas Greyrat, he is physically 12 and mentally he is 46 at that time while she is 15. The author later reveals a volume later that 15 is considered the age of an adult in his world. The reason she sleeps with him and she requests it, is because she nearly sees him die and because she wants to go on a training journey due to the fact that she failed to protect him. Its in chapter 63 in case you want to check.
Problem I have with this issue is how all the female characters love the mc due to how inferior they feel and due to the terrible circumstances they face. Eris is a spoiled child who takes after her grandfather and while she meets the mc when she is 10 and lives and travels with the mc for 5 years, she is told and forced by her mother to sleep with the mc almost when she is 12 because apparently no one else will possibility marry her. After coming back home despite being missing for 2 years, her own father is trying to marry her off to gain political power which results in her giving her virginity to the mc and running off to train to become someone who can protect the mc. She is a violent oujou sama with a big bust in case anyone wants to know how the mc classifies her.
Sylphiette is a childhood friend who's a mixed race who is befriended, and taught by the mc. She basically develops a childhood crush and marries him and stays married despite the fact that he will marry 2 other women. She is teased due to her hair when he rescues her. She fulfills the loyal childhood friend stereotype.
Lastly, the last wife is roxy who is in her 40s and taught the mc magic. He catches her masturbating in the 1st volume and steals one of her unwashed panties to remember her by. She falls in love when the mc rescues her in a labyrinth but she doesn't have any experience in male relationship because it states somewhere they all treated her like a child or just friends. She fulfills the loli teacher sterotype.
2. Ok the interference of prophecy, divine influences
In the first few volumes, the "human god hitogami" literally helps the mc do anything important. Befriend the superd when he's teleported to the magical kingdom, where to get his magical eye, ignore the request to save his parents, ect.... It really ruins any tension if a god is your guardian angel in my opinion.
Later on we find out that the human god is using him for his own purposes and the dragon god is a time traveler that's suppose to destroy him. He even meets himself 50 years from the future. This story is too unpredictable, whenever the mc has a problem, a god helps him or some random plot device helps him solve it. Despite the fact that he has one of the highest mana capacities and is good at spells and amazing at magic, he still has to negotiate, or get help from various beings stronger then himself.
3. The plot and the terrible sexual jokes
After he is dumped by Eris, he has ED (erectional dysfunction). One of the running gags is he worships his sensei Roxy and the holy object, her panties. If you look at volume 10, the whole volume is about him getting married to his 1st wife Sylpie. Keep in mind he will get married 2 more times... The fights that he starts are he wins due to his overwhelming magical abilities and some swordsmen abilities (red stray dragons, various bandits, monsters, students) or he is spared, pleads for his life. (1st time vs the dragon god, saved by human, 2nd time vs the dragon god, demon gods twice).
The more you will read this story the less you can care about the characters unless you pretend to be the main character which is some of the 10 star ratings are doing. In conclusion, don't waste your time, unless you want to pretend to be a gary sue who gets a harem and solves his problems with the interference of divine beings and fate (if you actually read past 150+). The discussion about the plot device seem to make things worse, like the author doesn't know what he is doing with his story anymore and is trying to stall for time or justify his poor plot.

While the premise is very interesting the writing and MC are not. Basically, a pedophile otaku in reborn into another world when he dies and becomes the most passive bad-ass in existence. He reaches maximum power by the time he's 6 and spends the next 10 years (where I stopped reading) doing jack shit in terms of growth. The characters are one dimensional stereotypes, story progresses in a predictable pattern and the MC fondles children.

I thought I had already left a comment that, overall, gave a slightly negative review of this series (cliches, not great writing, horribly perverse/twisted protagonist in some ways BUT some pretty great ideas).
Turns out I hadn't.
And instead of saying that, I just need to say: I just read chapter 154, end of vol 15, and holy SHIT that was a great chapter. The series just grew a beard. Shit just got real.
EDIT: Ok, it's finished now, except a few side-chapters. I think overall a great ending and his final opponent was the type that really challenged. I like how as soon as he realised he'd be facing off against that opponent, he immediately realised how difficult it would be.
So, final rating....there IS the whole 'first 14 volumes are only above-average' thing (as in, I'd rate the first 14 columes probably a 7, closer to 8 if the editing made the tl sound natural), so I can't justify a 10/10, even though I'm wholly satisfied. I'll give it a 9.3
But I'd give the series a 5 stars on Goodreads, by their rating system: 'It was amazing!'

this is the ultimate masturbatory material for anyone who always dream of going to another place, living in another time, and being the strongest, baddest, most loved person of all time - this is the daydream of many, the wish of most.
and i love it.
i love that this manga never try to make a good hero, he is what most of us are - the useless, the weak, the anime lovers and game addicts. we who spend hours farming slime just to immersed ourselves in a world of magic and sword. we who got excited with 2D. we who dream of being the greatest existence just like in game.
there is so much imperfection here, because the protagonist is too perfect. however, that's what we want, that's what we imagine our game life would be. so many talk of boobs and ass, quite often interfering with the progression of the story, but that's fine, just like an ero game. even I, who do not like light novels because the sentences are too short and not smooth (none of translators fault, those kind of things are just hard), are charmed by rudeus's life, my daydream of a second life.
dont expect literary masterpiece, dont expect riveting characters, dont expect anything mind blowing since this is just a fantasy game in a novel form - but embrace it for what it is - a guilty pleasure.

The main character is stupid and trying to have sex with little girls in a 10 year old body. Some people defend it as if medieval time the average age is 13 or whatever. That's a load of crap he wasn't from the medieval, he was specially reincarnated and have the mentality of his original life. Therefore his world view, everything he knows, and thought process have been shaped by previous life. If the setting wasn't fantasy and he just reincarnated to the same time line then he would have been a pedophile. Apparently his previous life he doesn't have any morale of giving a damn if he can bang little girls or not. The characters are unbelievable that it borderline those crappy fanfiction, the only depth I've seen is the main character and he's basically a creeper with every passing chapter. He stole his master panty and want to bang random lil girls in a 10 year body. Hell he's willing to raise that elf girl just to get her to grow up to bang her.
In light of people thinking I'm prude and putting word and expectation in my mouth (user fuznikz):
In the prologue the MC was masturbating to porn in the Novel version and his brother use a baseball bat and broke his computer.
In the web version, he wasn't masturbating to JAV porn, he was masturbating to his brother's young daughter pictures.
" In the web novel it states that the video was of his younger brother's loli daughter."

So from the get go, we know that MC is pretty much a creeper. With that in mind his character in general is a creeper and enjoy little girls. It's fine if you're ok with this character, what struck me as annoying, I really try to give this a chance is that fact that MC is regress multiple time and just down right stupid.
There will be tons of reviews defending MC but my points stand:
1. MC enjoy little girls
2. MC is pathetic and regress a lot in general
3. Author doesn't know what puberty is or whatever but MC from the getgo from being reincarnated is a horn dog, real creeper
From what I have read so far MC hardly change at all. His creeper tendancies especially toward little girls is just creepy. Fundamentally, he's a freaking loser with a illegal fetish.

In light of people thinking I'm prude and putting word and expectation in my mouth (user fuznikz):
In the prologue the MC was masturbating to porn in the Novel version and his brother use a baseball bat and broke his computer.
In the web version, he wasn't masturbating to JAV porn, he was masturbating to his brother's young daughter pictures.
