Loved them so much I actually wrote/programmed a few. Free flash version of one of them at:

http://games.mochiads.com/c/g/college-romance/CollegeRom ance.swf

Another game that is downloadable (Linux/Mac/PC) at:

http://www.tycoongames.eu/adventures/collegeromance.php

And if you want to write/program your own, you'll want to check out this tool:

Hope the above helps encourage folks to do their own games (so I have something to play)!

My favorite Japanese translated one is "The Sagara Family". Semi-realistic setting, very nice art and voice work. Kind of hope that's what heaven turns out to be like biggrin

Yeah, I've never heard of them either. It it just another kind of hentai video game? (I know that you said that there are a "few" non-H versions, so I assume that these are mostly a H-culture thing...)

Yeah I like them.
To people who haven't played, you should try them. But be aware:
-Most games are in Japanese, and contain violence and hentai scenes.
-Seriously, they're just for manga and anime lovers. I mean, the gameplay is kinda...Well, just think about the game that Keima plays in The World God Only Knows.
-They are freaking huge in size and require lots of time to finish(this depends on the game)

Here's an example: School Days visual novel - Bloody Conclusion or you can read about the endings here; btw, a visual novel has many different endings, and finding them all is a very enjoyable process.

Wiki Definition of Visual Novel

Now that I think about it, we don't have the option : I don't like it/I hate it

I've only played Tsukihime yet, but I already love them biggrin It's great that in each storyline different parts of the past are uncovered.
With visual novels, it's sometimes better to think of them as novels, and not games. They are not the typical games...

Personally I have played Fate Stay Night, and a few other 18+ games. Truthfully they are not that bad, and there are some really great horror/gore games that don't have any hentai scenes, but have a really great and complex story. And actually a lot of visual novels have been turned into anime so it is interesting trying to see the different endings and story lines that I didn't know about.

I enjoy them. And since some are quite long, it's a great way to kill time.

I didn't know what it was either - until I saw this poll and read up on the subject.

Now that I do know, I can safely say that I'll never play one. I'm not really into these computer-game-type things anyway.

I have fate/stay night and clannad on my computer, but never actually got around to playing them.
