Though the rating system is quite a good idea in theory, often there are people who give series very low scores merely to be mean. Since it is impractical to wait for humankind to stop becoming utter jerks when on the web, we must look for another solution. I believe one possible way these false ratings can be lessened (hopefully), is if a system is implemented where until a user has been registered for X amount of days, they cannot rate a manga. I do not typically post on forums, but in this case I could not idly sit back. This disease has been allowed free rein for too long, and though using the word "disease" may seem melodramatic, it is an apt expression of this increasingly common trend. DO THE RIGHT THING, thank you. biggrin

Sigh.... It's a much larger problem though. If we make users wait, then they just won't vote at all. You have to realize that this site is still growing. Since we've opened up the rating (so that you didn't have to comment in order to post a rating), we've had over 2.5x as many ratings as we originally had. My hope is that eventually, once series get rated enough, it will all even out. Now I know what you are saying, and I agree with you somewhat. I have often thought about ways of discrediting votes which are pure 10's or 1's in some way--but I haven't figured a good way that will work that will be fair. My only other idea was to somehow use the lists. For all series that are on a user's list (this could also depend on the list), if they rate it lower, then that will count more than someone who does not have the item on their list. Also, their ratings for other series of the same genre could be taken into account when crediting their rating. Not only that, the popularity of the series could be taken into account (discrediting 1's for very popular series for instance). There are a lot of things that could go into a really advanced system for the ratings.

Now we have all this data (and the list data is still growing), so I may be able to implement something like this in the future.

Unfortunately for now, I don't have the time to improve it (bogged down with school). I will improve this someday though, because it really bothers me as well.

A list by rating would be nice, or maybe a list where the quantity of people reading it or finished reading it ,the rating would be taken in, it's just an idea.

Maybe it's just me and nobody else is interested but... i like to read new manga only when there is a "decent" quantity of scans released (like 4+ volumes) and if the new releases are somewhat fast (at lease a couple of volumes each year-.-)
So for myself it would be nice to have a feature to search for new manga based on number of volumes/chapters availble and release speed^^

tacchan23 I like to do that too and you can manage with the tools you have right now just search by rating (how can you search if its new if you want it with 4 volumes ??) and then read the intro if you like it press find all releases if you see at least 2 per month in average then you have a winner...

Manick I think the giving more weigh to the ratings of people who have the manga on their list is a good idea! I don't know about the high scores -all about the taste in my particular case I love sports/comedy thus I have series like Slam Dunk and Hajime no Ippo style with a 10- but is very uncommon to give a 1 -the lowest I have is a 5 or 6 a think- I believe that if someone gives a 1 they should be allowed but if they have lets say 5-10 series -and they are popular- with such a low rating then a search to catch this pattern would be nice and well after that I don't know I think you would know better what to do with such user...

thanks for reading my rant \(>_<)/ banzai

Wow... do people actually do that kind of stuff? I mean, seriously, what on earth is the point?

I joined Mangaupdates some week or two ago, and I've already rated some 130 different manga. So, I have to agree that it is good that you don't have to comment anymore before voting, since then I wouldn't have voted nearly as much ^^

Anidb has a rather fun (though, I can't say that it works incredibly well) feature... By looking at what you've voted on, it gives you tips on what you might find interesting... Through this, I've found some interesting new titles.

Also, I like the idea with randomized tips, unusual stuff might show up, which could be good ;)

[Edit] Lol, I have to become more observant bigrazz[/Edit]

jajajaja got it! sorry biggrin but I forgot to tell you before that a good way would also be to check the best shoujo, shonen, etc... manga threads! I do that every now and then and after reading the posts there is always a manga that many people recommend.

Hmm...yeah...people probably wouldn't vote if they had to wait but...what you could do is have two different kinds of ratings, similar to what movie critics and game websites have. You could have a few of your older, more active members review series and have an average reviewers' rating. Then, both the reviewers' and public rating scores can be listed when searched. Obviously, not all of the series will be able to be rated thusly, but this might help people decide whether to read a popular manga with an average/poor public score.

Well either way, I don't have time to do anything at the moment--but it is on my list.

I personally think this would be a really cool feature here.

Personally, I didn't really join manga-updates until the list feature. I never really felt the need until it. I personally think that although it can use a bit of work, it has a lot of potential to it. And a lot of applications.

For finding manga, I think its a perfect opportunity to do something you couldn't before the lists feature. I also think with lists, and making lists do more, it makes more people inclined to vote.

Doing a "people who read this also enjoyed..." sort of link on the series info page, that did a query of users that also have that series on their list. It would of course need some sort of "relevance" system that put the rating system into effect. The actual formula might have to be hammered out to get the best results, but an example would be something like...

If a user has the series on their list, it would a relevance point.
If a user has the series on their list AND it has a rating of 7 or more. It gains 1.5 points.
If a user has the series on their list AND it has a rating of 3 or less. It loses a point.

It would probably need to be more complex than that, but thats the idea. The only issue I really see is how much resources it would use to do large queries like that. Perhaps only updating it weekly or something.

I've been brainstorming some ideas for just that. It has long been a requested feature on this site and since I know how the list feature going I think I can make a viable recommendation feature. I know there's a topic around here where i talked about it a bit, but can't find it.

Stay tuned. Things will be added eventually. For now I suggest using the genre searching function.

So I just joined as you can see and first off I'd like to say it is very cool site and I see it and me become very good friends biggrin

As for things that could help, the brief time I've been searching I haven’t really found anything that I could tell was using it so I will throw it out there. If you were to add a way to search keywords attached to the manga the same way as you have the genres connected to the manga. This way if some one comes on to look for manga about rock stars. They type it in and they have a relevant search.

This may already be in place and I just can't tell but I think it would help out with people looking for a certain topic that might span over multiple genres but not necessarily interact with those genres.

Again awesome site!
