looking for a manga where teenage protagonist who was perhaps b4 soldier/assasin/fighter has to adjust to a normal life/civilian life, preferably going to high school for some reason. It would be even better if there was some romance however that should only be a side thing.

example would be sosuke from full metal panic, though he doesn't stop being soldier.

please no manga where main characters involved die. also i would prefer the manga to be serious. some comedy is k, not too much though.

At the top of my head, Asu no Yoichi!, though it's more comedic than serious.

Blood + might fit? Adjusting to HS isn't the point and is only right at the beginning. After that, it goes another direction.

This may not fit as he's not any of the things you listed but:

Dragon Who- About a Dragon who takes human form to find a woman who plays a significant role in the fate of the world. It's got it's dramatic parts but for the most part it's comedy about a the dragon trying to find the girl in a school and trying to not reveal his identity.

Another one could be Shinobi Life as he was a ninja before, however, I don't know how they are all going to end, who is going to die and who not, as the is still going O.o

Doushirou de Gozaru ought to be what your looking for.

Kagetora though as with fmp, he doesn't really stop what he is doing.

Devil Devil kinda fits. About a powerful devil that ends up stuck in the body of a weak teenager for some reason (forgot why, finished the manga a loooong time ago). The devil has to adjust to life as a high (middle?) school-er while fighting off other devils and angels. At one point, his rival, an angel, possess the body of his host's older brother. The manga is complete.

Second Devil Devil but be warned it shifts into a different genre in the middle as they go into hell and it becomes action adventure type. The beginning fits though, and it had an interesting story.
