I think this works. It isn't obvious at first, but later on in the series, when the main character's past is revealed, you understand that he never meant to fall in love with anyone (even though he does). Don't want to give too much away, but he basically hurt someone he loved a long time ago, so he doesn't think he deserves love.

Similar story here. The male lead hasn't so much as given up on love as that he feels he doesn't deserve it because he used to do a lot of bad shit. Very sweet story. I recommend this one the most.

I was thinking something more along the lines of beauty and the beast. Not in the literal sense, with one of them being ugly or anything. I just saw a commercial for the movie being re-released, and though the situation was interesting. Someone who is by all means undesirable (beast) has pretty much given up on the notion of love, is suddenly found by it when he imprisons the girl.
to make it a little broader, I got rid of the "undesirable" and just went with "someone who has pretty much given up on love, finds it"
