I know it's not very, but I see a lot of those sites that offers anime/manga download of unlicensed and sometimes licensed anime/manga, but they do it anyways, so what are the laws regarding this and the level of enforcement.

btw, this thread is not started to hear people's say on this subject, I'm just interested in the subject it self.

and I'm not here to start no movement, just a question that needs an answer

your answer will be appreciated.

btw I'm in canada, will that affect how the law is enforced? Or does canada have the same laws as the us?

each area may have their own stance on this, much like the whole music download a long time ago.

The level of enforcement also differs from one place to another, but last I checked with canada, not much have been said for this whole download deal.

On my country the download of everything( when i say everthing , is everiyhing) is not forbidden, but the distribution of a copyrighted material is forbidden no matter where you are (human right 27 or 28), Im from Venezuela, and here is so sad because no matter where you see, there is only fake things... I download manga because here doesnt sell it, the sellers can purchase dollars for it... ( thanks to Chavez and his politician)... but if someday on Venezuela sell then i will buy it legally...

if truth be told I have a site that's coming up that offers direct download of anime/manga for free ( no mega upload and cr@9), but before I do my final touches, I want to make sure things are cool, and if not, I'll have to change the direction this is going. Or maybe just host unlicensed stuff.

and I got to make sure I don't piss off uncle sam

100% illegal if you didnt buy it from an official distributer.

Downloading Copyrighted Manga for free -> illegal
Downloading Copyrighted Subbed Anime for free -> illegal
Paying to download Copyrighted Anime/Manga that isnt an official distributer(i.e. naurtofan.com <-go to hell Tazmo) -> illegal

Nothing more to add ( except for: go to hell tazmo and never come back )
It was discussed before, not in the manga general section I think, probably here in chatter box.

It isn't. There is no "how", there's only "is it legal or not to d/l..." etc. This is a yes or no question here.

Technically it is not legal, because it shouldn't be online at all...
But technically it is not illegal either, because all information on the internet (if you know how to access it) is free. That's what the internet was made for. Free share of information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_wide_web
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_privacy

Unfortunately the world police (also known as the usa), recently joined by japan among other capitalistic assholes, are trying to regulate the information that circulates on the internet and made international laws regarding privacy, intellectual property and copyrighted materials. In other words rich people want to make laws that help them get even richer.

The nature of the world wide web is that everything that is on it is supposed to be free. If you don't condone to it, then don't connect your computer to it.

This issue in Canada has been delightfully foggy as of late, take this for example:

“Piracy for personal use is no longer targeted,” Noël St-Hilaire, head of copyright theft investigations of the Canadian police, said in an interview with Le Devoir. “It is too easy to copy these days and we do not know how to stop it,”

(from: http://torrentfreak.com/canadian-police-tolerates-piracy-071110/ )

Getting anything off of the internet without paying some sort of monetary compensation to whomever owns appropriate copyrights is illegal.

Question answered.

This site provides information, only.

We provide downloads. We provide information, as a manga resource.

I have no idea what you're doing here. You're here of your own free will. Everyone else, aswell.

I am here moderating the forums and adding as much information as I can to the database.

Correct, if it is copyrighted based upon your area of residence.

Legality depends on the laws of the country that can actually enforce it. Pirated Operating systems, microsoft software, video games, etc, can be purchased in countries around the world for dirt cheap. This is especially predominate in places like China and Russia where the government simply doesn't care about American copyrights. Similarly, you'll find that America doesn't care about people who are downloading manga/anime, however Japan has been placing pressure on America to change their stance. (One of the largest reasons is because it is such a small group of people that actually download manga/anime) However it -is- illegal in both America and Canada, it's just not really enforced. The exception is when it's licensed, then american companies may put pressure on scanlating groups.

An exception I imagine would be certain fan manga like doujinshi when it's made as freeware.

it's simple, and i know you and everyone else have already knew ever since you first click on the download button for any manga online (for free)...this is to break it down for ya:

_ downloading manga in any form is illegal
_ we know it's illegal, but we still do it

_ this website is for information on those illegal activities
_ this website is technically legal, since it's not a direct distributor of the illegal activities

conclusion: we come here to get information on the illegal activities > we participate in illegal activities > we do it knowingly > the website isn't at fault

cool
