I want to share my opinion of sex scenes in Mangas.
It actually depends on the genre of the Manga, if it's the serious type, in which no fantasy/supernatural is involved, I guess it's okay.
In a romance Manga it is different, I don't know why but I can't stand seeing the heroine being soiled, whether it's by others or by the main character. I think it destroys the beauty and purity (?) of the story.
I don't want to be a hypocrite, if I want to see sex scenes, I'd read Hentai instead.
or maybe I'm just too young?
how about you, my brethren? I hope I'm not the only one.

edit:
I tend to stop reading a manga/not read it at all after overabundance/unnecessary sex scenes. regardless of which genre it has.
I wonder if I will change my pov after I get older or something

I'm with you on most of it. When the characters are younger I do feel like the heroine is being spoiled. When the characters are older I tend not to mind.

yeah I know what you mean. I always wondered why exactly that is, since it shouldn't be much different than hearing about real people who you know and who did it.
I agree when you say it destroys the "purity" of the story somehow but it depends on the genre too.
In a josei story where that seems to be a topic more often it doesn't feel as "wrong".maybe because there aren't virgin or virgin-like characters?or because of different expectations since most shounen and shoujo even more do without fail have less realistic and more idealistic components. so...if you have an idealized character it would,of course, feel wrong when she's "soiled".
I suppose most people think somewhat like that

I'm fine with sexscenes, what i hate are explicite scenes of rape and sexual violence
Depends upon the manga style

i have to disagree with you. well first of all, i mostly read smut and yaoi, so clearly i like seeing sex. but as far as encountering a sex scene in a manga where sex isn't the main focus, i usually like it. especially when it is displayed more realistically, rather than the overly-romantic and idealistic scenes of shojou smut or the over-sexed scenes of hentai. maybe its because i'm 22, but i'm not as interested in manga where they act like sex doesn't exist, or are too afraid to touch the topic. especially if its a romance manga involving older characters. sex is a normal part of life, so i have no problems seeing it in manga.

the other reason i disagree with you is that i think you kind of have a sexist view of what sex means for a woman. the whole "heroine being soiled". seriously? i don't think that sex has to mean that the woman is losing her virtue or her "purity". i know that's a common view, but i hate it and disagree with it. having sex doesn't make a girl dirty or a slut.

I think it depends on the story itself...
I usually don't care for smut, but that doesn't mean that I don't read stories that are a lot more sexually explicit, it's just that in smut the sex almost always seems to come out of nowhere.
For example, I really enjoyed Suki-tte Ii na yo, and I haven't read it in a while, but it would ruin it for me if the main couple had sex, since their relationship was so cute (I don't know if they have had sex since I stopped reading)
So, it just depends on the story and the characters...
If it's leading up to them having sex, then it's ok, but if their relationship is just 'cute' and suddenly sex is thrown in, then I'm not too fond of that

I believe it's the other way around, that I honor them and hold them as a perfect figure who does not exist in real life. Actually I don't like it as well when the main character (male) has sex with somebody (depends on the genre, naturally) so I figure I'm not quite the sexist.
What I meant is stated by jelzin89. I couldn't care less how people around me react to sex, just in Manga that I feel uncomfortable

I'm 50/50 on this and here's why?
I do think that the genre plays an important role but more than that, the general atmosphere plays an even bigger role. I have nothing against Sex in Manga what i have problem against is when it's used?

Take Love strip
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
for instance the tone set right at the beginning and the fact that it's a smut manga gave the indication that it'll be a manga that contained sex scenes. without the sex scenes the would not have been any point to the manga?

also Take Kare First Love
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
though this starts like any typical shoujo of this type it later establishes it self by providing a more realistic tone but not being completely realistic by introducing, Finance, Future, Trust, Virginity and the possibility of marriage. this shows that one cannot naively protect the "innocence/purity" whilst writing about these kind of story in a serious tone. Sure the the sex could have been left out but then it would have been like every other shoujo on the market following the cliche'd recipe.

Take lovely complex the happy go lucky tone set at the beginning set the entire story up even with the drama the happened later and a sex scene would have just ruined the whole story cause the was just no need and the art style would not have complemented it either.

Take Bitter Virgin, Berserk and Zetman.
Sex is something that most people practice and nearly everyone is interested in it. so it can be used to manipulate the emotions of the reader by the author but this can only be done if the character has been developed by a significant amount.
essentially what i'm saying is sex in a manga is not completely right or wrong it all depends on the context that it is used in and also how the characters view it? in most shoujo it is view as a sacred thing and something you only do with someone you love. the second common type of view is heavy smutty manga and borderline stuff and they say it not all that important everyone does it.

While I agree that it depends on genre, I also believe that it depends heavily on how it is handled.

Two good examples I can think of right away are Ichigo 100% and Love Roma. Both have protagonists with "pure" relationships (and Ichigo is shounen, to boot), but they both were also able to handle the sex well.

I don't get the whole "purity" thing... especially after what happened with the mangaka for kannagi. I think it's totally fine for the hero/heroine to have sex, since sex is just another step in character development (for romance at least).

I can only say six things after reading that, "WHAT THE FUCK, ARE YOU KIDDING ME." I guess it's just me but unless shown or said otherwise I don't see usually see characters in manga as non-virgins (unless their older). and the kannagi case makes no sense to me at all (wait isn't the manga still ongoing, despite this case being almost 4 years old).

As long as there is love and things do not get ugly later then its ok =P, when the main hero/heroine are in a romance sometimes i really want them to have sex already and be done with it XD

but sex is natural part of romance. consummate love always include sex in the package! so if your character romantically involved with other character, i think its fine to have them engage in sexual activity. after all, act of making love is not act of rape. you are not soiled by making love. your honor is still there. if making love, or just consensual sex, considered soiling, then what come of our mother? don't be a freak who rages when 'good ending' has its main female engage in sexual activity!

(but that's my opinion, though)

of course there are maturity restriction (age; not so young), or proper etiquette (requiring marriage in some cultures). flawing those things can be considered soiling, unpleasant to read. but i think, as long as the theme matches, meaning, there is lesson to be brought, its no problem.

Pfft, feminist. He is right, girls should wait until they are older before turning into hump-anything-that-moves kid-sluts and ending up on Teen Mom. Why do you think fathers hate letting their daughters have sex? Like it or not, there are, always have been, and always will be differences between men and women, with different ideals to uphold and keep: A man has his dignity, and a woman has her chastity; losing either is shameful and dishonorable.
