Well, technically Christmas is a pagan holiday. It was just commandeered by the christians, when they decided to celebrate Christ's birth, which happened much earlier than December. And I don't even know where Valentine's came from. So technically they are hedonistic bastards since they don't even celebrate Christmas for its intended christian purpose.

Please don't take that last part seriously.

13 pages of posts are a real pain to search through so I'll apologize in advance if someone has already posted a similar question.

Love letters... do Japanese students really do this like in the manga. That is girl gives boy a love letter in the shoe box, then meets him behind the gym to confess. Does this really happen?

celebrate it as a couples holiday

off topic

Soo here's a new one for those Japanophiles out there.
Question:
You know how people make a big deal about Japanese samurai armor? How it's almost always worn into battle and whatever. What happened to that armor during the time period of the Shinsengumi, Tokugawa Shogunate, the Meji Restoration, Rurouni Kenshin, Peacemaker Kurogane and the like. It seems as if they wore minimal protection during that time period. Cuz I've never seen a full set of Japanese armor being worn in any manga or anime set in that time period.

My guess. Armor was only worn for open battle, and by wealthy samurai who could actually afford armor. As I recall, the term samurai was originally reserved for those who were in service to some kind of lord.

My (like ten yrs old) lil brother once went on a kick about how freaky Japan was, telling everyone stuff like "Did you know it's okay to pee on the sidewalk in Japan?"
I tried telling him, "Hey, what if in Japan, they said things like 'People in America paint their houses with poop'?" I mean you can make up a rumor about a faraway country and somebody somewhere will believe it. In Djibouti, underwear is illegal! In Soviet Russia, manga reads YOU!

You mean it's not a symbol of unfaltering patriotism? That would explain all the looks I'm getting.

That's true, but in Soviet Russia, manga propably
does read you, although there's no manga, but
you get the espionage thing, rite?

Is Bulimia (self-induced vomiting) common?

Also, it seems like all japanese girls have bangs. Is it just fashion?

Well most of it is true, regarding the uniforms, it's pretty factual that the girls dress like that. We have Japanese exchange students that come to out school every year because Japanese is a language we study at our school. The girls dress pretty much like that except their skirts aren't up to their asses. The ones that came to our school had sailor uniforms on which were so cute! Their socks we're knee-high, and had really cool colorful trainers on! They didn't wear a tie, they had those Hanky things tied up (: To be honest none had makeup on and they all looks pretty cute without it anyways. They had cool hair accessories and jewelry. As for the guys, they had Blazers, some had a jumper inside also, and a white shirt, with a tie. They has REALLY baggy trousers, which were so cool, compared to usual pants. Their hair styles are pretty awesome too, the way they style it is so cool!

Ok, I read all the post in this thread and found some answers to questions I wasn't really going to ask... but knowledge is knowledge regardless of how useful it is...

I am not going to ask about Anime related stuff... for starters... I would like someone to point me in the direction of a really good Tokyo City Map (other cities could work)... yeah is an odd question, but I can't find any good one online >_< and even if is in a Japan Government site there MUST be a reliable map around or at least 2 or 3 maps that have the following info:

Detailed course of the Subway Lines and the Elevated parts of said Subway (there must be a single map with this, but again I couldn't find a reliable one), with every stop and in with district is the stop

Somewhat detailed Street and Avenues map (specially the elevated highways) with some important/famous buildings "if possible"

Location of Parks and how to get there...

Creepy? Odd? I could say I am a strange person at times, but before ask any kind of question I would like to have the bases of where it is...

why I am asking this? Data >_> for what? for a book.

Now lets see if someone answers

PS: THis is the best I could get
