Do you really mean "otaku" as in a person with an obsession? Because the male lead in Horimiya isn't an otaku in any sense....

Well, there's Omae o Otaku ni Shiteyaru kara, Ore o Riajuu ni Shitekure!, but I'm not sure how much of a recommendation this is being that I haven't actually read it, but I'm mentioning it anyway because I'm aware that it exists.

Tonari no Kashiwagi-san? It's cute, but not exactly deep. =) Art style is lacking in realism, but not poor.

Sure.

Following the category recommendations for Omae o Otaku ni Shiteyaru kara, Ore o Riajuu ni Shitekure!, I see Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu.

Now, this one I have seen, but I can't really recommend it. In fact, stay far, far away. I've read a few chapters of the manga, but specifically, my un-recommendation comes from the anime.

There are two, 12 episode long seasons, and if you can choke down the first season, there's little reason to desire watching the second. I'd have to rewatch a few episodes to give you any concrete gripes, as my memory is pretty vague on why I wasn't satisfied with it, but if I'm remembering right, I think my main gripe was simply that the story was dragged on waaaay too long.

Like, the novel in which the anime is based on is 16 volumes long, and while this is billed as a 'harem', the protagonist only ever has eyes for Haruka, so watching 24 episodes of two people dancing around a verbalization of their feelings becomes real boring, real fast. Especially coupled with the fact that all of the initial conflicts surrounding Haruka's circumstance are mostly resolved, so when new conflicts start bubbling up, it comes off as a poor attempt to extend the life of a series that's already gasping for air.

On top of ALL THAT, the main character is so... bleh... that I can't even remember him. You see how the description reads "The main character, Ayase Yuuto is your average boy without any special traits?" Well, that's about the most accurate description one could ever hope to write. He's so average it'll make you wanna puke, and to be fair, as a reader, I see this description used all the time, but always find that the 'average' main character has many redeeming qualities to make up the difference. Not this time.

Anyway, this has unintentionally turned into a mini-rant, so I'll cut myself off and end by saying that Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu is a little different from what you're looking for, in that the female lead is both the otaku and the popular one, and the main character is your average doofus who happens to be there. Don't watch it, it sucks.

If you finished reading the ongoing Tonari no Kashiwagi-san, then let me reaffirm that you've made the right choice. It's not THAT terrible, but it follows a similar vain of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, where you just want it to get to the point. To its credit, however, the main character of Tonari no Kashiwagi-san has the drive to push forward with his relationship. Clumsily, I might add, but you can't say he's not proactive or trying.

I'd say the main problem I have with Tonari no Kashiwagi-san, is that I slowly started to notice how vacant the world is. The story itself is about four characters, Sakuraba and his friend, and Kashiwagi and her friend, but outside of that little bubble of characters, there's almost no interaction with the world. At all. None. It almost feels like I'm reading Sakura Sakura (Morishige), except the author neglected to mention the back story about these being THE ONLY FOUR TEENAGERS ON THE PLANET.

In short, if you dropped this already, don't pick it back up. Especially so if you're looking for a "popular girl" because Kashiwagi isn't really "popular" in a sense that you can feel it through any sort of interaction with the student body. She's billed as "popular" on paper, but if you weren't told that, you'd never know. I just got done flipping through the first 40 chapters which covers an entire school year, and I'm dead serious when I say there is almost NO interactions with society. It's really strange.

[Edit]

Oh, hey, looks like the author finally became aware that his (her?) manga lacks any sort of society at around chapter 41, by introducing a different character AND he (she?) pokes fun at this aspect of the manga with a tongue-in-cheek start to chapter 42. Neat.
...

Why am I ranting?

@Badkarma: Yeah, you're right. Kashiwagi-kun is shit and not to mention its slow as hell. I stop reading it in ch 50 or so. The slow pace is just a no-no. Too bad the moe art cannot redeem the shitty plot.

@OP-kun: Probably Wagatsuma-san wa Ore no Yome. Maybe Btooom!, but the female lead isn't a popular one. And Shinigami-sama to 4-nin no Kanojo fit your request.
