Are there any romances where the death doesn't happen to either of the leads, but ones that are close to them? Like the female lead is in love with this guy and the male lead is in love with the female lead. The guy who the female lead loves dies and then basically the male lead is there for her and she falls for him. And the male lead doesn't pounce on her while she's in a fragile state, but is just genuinely there for her even though he loves her.

I haven't read it so I'm not sure, but Regatta sounds like it could be like that

I had forgotten about Regatta, but yeah it fits. If you think of anymore, please post.

Haru no Noroi - Please give it a try.

Cross Game - Subtle romance, primary focus are the sports and slice of life aspects.

Eh, not really about Orange considering Kakeru is the male lead. Anyway, I've read both, but thanks.
