I hadn't seen a poll for this and since we already have one for the FF series, time for one for the Tales of.... This is another expansive franchise I enjoy and I'm sure they are popular here...
Vote the remakes as their first release.

Tales of... > Final Fantasy.
It was hard for me to decide, this being my favorite, non-strategy RPG series. Symphonia was the one that introduced me to the series (though I went back and played Phantasia and Eternia; never got around to Destiny or it's sequel though). I haven't played Rebrth, since there's been no English release, same with Innocence, and I'm unable to play Vesperia (I have too much pride to buy an Xbox 360).
But I'd probably go with Abyss over Symphonia and the others. It's battles were more fun, it's story was better, and most significantly, it's characters were far superior. Symphonia had two characters that annoyed the hell out of me (Genis and Colette) whereas I liked the entirety of Abyss' cast. Also, Abyss has Tear, which automatically makes it a winner over pretty much anything.
Eternia was good, though parts of it dragged a bit and there were too few and too few interesting characters. Phantasia is very respectable. It's probably a disservice that I didn't play it until recently, and can't fully respect how revolutionary it was when it was first released, but it was a solid enjoyable game even by the standards of today. Legendia is at the low end of my list (beating out Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology, only). I liked the battle system, I liked some of the characters (mostly the ones who weren't named Shirley), but it didn't impress me like Abyss or Symphonia.
I'm very much looking forward to Symphonia 2 next month.

Kind of a biased poll since Tales of Symphonia is the only Tales of game released in U.K. unless the others had Star Wars cloaking devices. (GameCube version)

So far my favorite is Abyss, but I can't really say since I have yet to play Vesperia...
My fav is definitely Symphonia.
Phantasia is my second fav.

So true, I loved Symphonia but the only reason I replayed it was because of Raine and Sheena. Colette and Genis just kinda annoyed me a lot.
Abyss wasn't so heavy on the whole guilty streak but too bad it didn't have the partner system.
So glad the Abyss anime is 26 episodes instead of the tiny 4-8 episodes, they should be able to fit almost everything now instead of cutting it to almost incoherent...
BTW, you missed Tempest, though it wasn't translated like others but since you listed Innocence might as well.

i love this series, FF used to be my favorite until phantasia blew my mind, and then symphonia, legendia, and destiny 2. Looks like Abyss is pretty good too. glad to hear Im not the only person who hated collete. I always tried my hardest in the interactions with her to make her the character who hated me the most
phantasia and symphonia had anime's too, and symphonia's a manga too(with a few chapters all about sheena, ie the cool)

I have to say that my all time favorites so far have been Phantasia and Symphonia, I haven't been able to play Vesperia or Abyss quite yet but I plan to.

First would be Abyss, great story and great characters. Then would be Phantasia, played it when I was looking for some good old school RPGs and totally got me into the Tales series. Finally would be Symphonia, love Sheena and can't wait for 2, although I wish they made the better version for the US with the special attacks and more cut scenes. I'd like to play them all but don't have the systems and cash.
