"Cute girls doing cute things" is just a niche market that seems to work, I'm sure a part of the target audience is the lolicon section of the fandom, though never as much as Kodomo no Jikan. I enjoy it as long as the comedy is decent, and that's really hit or miss by the series (I thought Azumanga was great, but I couldn't really get into sketchbook, just as an example).

At least, I'm assuming we're talking about those sort of things as opposed to, say, the anime adaption of Kure-nai, which has an entirely different target audience (falling more in line with stuff like Hotman or Usagi Drop).

^The latter is not what I'm talking about. Those seem more like Guardian/Child relationships to me.

I didn't say I hated them, just was pointing out an observation.

I actually enjoy Minami Ke and Lucky Star quite a bit, though am a little perturbed as to why it seems to pop up as a constant theme.

It's just banking off of past successes. Whichever came first (I think it may have been Azumanga or Ichigo Mashimaro, but I honestly have no idea) hit a niche market that responded very vocally. Subsequent shows in the same vein are just successfully tapping into the same fanbase, and gradually expanding it (Lucky Star especially hit it big since it tapped into Haruhi's massive fanbase). I don't really understand what there is to be surprised about, things inexplicably gather cult followings all time. It's a matter of luck more than anything else.

I just find it trippy and worth commentary.

seinen is anything published in a magiazine directed toward an older male market(18+) but it's the same way not every older guy likes nothing but hyper violent action movies. need a little variety, and that's where good ole yotsuba comes in

Alright. You just asked why and I answered the more literal reason.

You're right, it is something that you normally wouldn't expect to be this popular, but if it sells it sells. There's not really any two ways about it, or any better way to explain it. We could speculate endlessly on potential reasons ~18+ males feel the need to read the plotless antics of little girls (and cultural influences that may have laid the pavement for its success), but what it's really going to come back to is that whoever came up with the idea just got lucky and people responded to it.

Since I'm on the verge of just repeating my sentiments eternally for now good reason, I'll slink back into the shadows now...

I don't like super violent action flicks. I enjoy Seinen Romance more than anything, or a good drama.
