New Poll - Types of Relationships
This week's poll is from our member Sapphiresky. There are many types of romances, but I specifically wanted the poll options to be based on genders and number of partners, rather than things like long distance relationship or love/hate relationships, etc.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Yaoi or yuri?
Choices:
I'm female and I prefer yuri - votes: 787 (4.9%)
I'm female and I prefer yaoi - votes: 4683 (29.4%)
I'm female and I prefer neither - votes: 1690 (10.6%)
I'm female and I like both equally - votes: 1066 (6.7%)
I'm male and I prefer yuri - votes: 3726 (23.4%)
I'm male and I prefer yaoi - votes: 480 (3%)
I'm male and I prefer neither - votes: 3012 (18.9%)
I'm male and I like both equally - votes: 476 (3%)
There were 15920 total votes.
The poll ended: February 7th 2015

Are your really surprised my Archon and about the villains pole.
Now we know why Shikamaru is so beloved.
I prefer Monogamous boy/girl couples without thinking for a second because this is the one with the biggest quality hit rate. Harem on the other hand and it´s borderline negative storytelling can go to hell unless it is Oooku/Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei(King of Trolls).
Everything can be written well of course but i want quality storytelling not a sleeping aid.

Ahhh... that middle option is a little.. no For the sake of uniformity, it should probably read as "monogamous same sex couples." That said, I prefer to read about monogamous relationships regardless of gender. I'm a romantic and I like "true love" stories smile

I'm throwing in another vote for "monogamous regardless of genders of people involved" and don't get why that isn't the option considering non of the other choices are limited to het setups.

Another thing we can take away from the previous poll is that the males in this site tend to avoid homosexuality in fiction - 1/5 of the voting population and the 3rd highest option is something one can't ignore haha.

Anyways, new week, new poll. I read romance mainly to see how characters interact, and character interaction transcends the kind of romance. So no preference for me.

I usually read most romance kind of stories, but these days, just give me all the yuri. Can never read enough yuri.

what the fuck is with the first choice Monogamous boy/girl couples, it should be Monogamous couples or boy/girl couples
the way the poll reads right now is that Same sex relationships cant be Monogamous

I chose the first option. Only reason I didn't choose "no preference" is because of harem. I will read any type of romance as long as it isn't harem. Harem just annoys me to no end. I prefer there to be one or two possible love interests at most.

thread

» herrdachs on February 7th, 2015, 5:32am

I voted no preference. I have a real bad habit of being drawn to harem mangas for... well, obvious reasons. But honestly the most rewarding reads are usually the non-harems (not that harem-mangas can't be).
I mean heck, Negative-kun to Positive-kun was one of the most enjoyable ones I've read and that's a same sex monogamous one, and I wouldn't call that my preference.

So yeah, no preference. wink

The kind of romance that I'd love to see would be a polyamorous or open relationship that works, as opposed to love triangles/polygons full of drama. Then again, I guess those stories doesn't really exist out there, so such an option would be moot to include.

Out of available options, I'm somewhat torn - same-sex romance has by far the greatest potential to be interesting, but it is wasted because of the usual tropes and cliches employed by shoujo ai/shounen ai manga. As such, I think I'll choose one night stands - I don't like the usual drama in "ordinary" romance manga.

I'm a weird person, I absolutely hate most romance stories out there, but those that I like, melt my heart. I'm a huge sucker for unique/interesting stories.

Actually there are tons of those since that's one common theme in porn doujinshi. Peaceful polygamy requires shallow women with extremely low self esteem or a very limited set of circumstances. Any setting where the partners have to think about it is bound to be filled with drama.

Now that's quite judgmental, and you should note that the word I used is polyamory, which is multiple men, and multiple women. As much as society wants to believe that it's impossible, amoral, and goes against nature, successful, happy polyamorous relationships exist out there, and I personally know one guy who has children with multiple women, and they're neither shallow, have low self-esteem, are unhappy, or in a limited set of circumstances.

I'm not too big on romance as the main plot point, but I love same sex relationships. <3
I guess most stories are about monogamous couples, but I don't mind either way.

Monogamous as I've always found them to have the most depth and thus the most interesting. Sometimes I think manga go the harem route simply because the mangaka doesn't want to put the effort in to create the depth that's necessary to make a relationship interesting. I might read/watch a harem for comedic value and if it has other enjoyable aspects, but there's a part of me that always feels bad for the harem members (IRL such a playboy/playgirl would be a jerk). Still, despite being too prevalent, I think those fantasies have their place.

However I do especially hate romance manga where there is a definite primary love interest in the presence of a harem simply because the protagonist is too weak or too unempathetic to resist the advances of others (and then the fact that this hurts the main love interest is ignored or considered a joke). In fact this happens too often in manga that aren't even considered harems. I've never liked this because it makes it quite clear to me as a reader that, while trying to create the appearance of a "genuine" romance, they are still stuck in the gender-specific harem fantasy world that does not actually consider the other sex's feelings except for on a very superficial level.

I'm kinda funny, I guess. I enjoy both Monogamous and Harem, but mostly dislike Love triangles. Generally b/c Triangles tend to have either the completely ignorant (oh, she/he liked me?) or the unobtainable (which is almost always combined with ignorant). One night stands can be fun and it really depends on the story for Same sex (yeah I know, lol). Thus I picked No pref.

Normally, I prefer little to no romance in the stories I like. But if there is to be romance, I'll pick boy-girl romance, preferably monogamous but no matter if it's a decent harem. The problem is the drama tag which often comes with romance, or the comedy tag which usually means I prefer not to read the story at all.

thread

» KJacket on February 10th, 2015, 6:28am

This, me too. I'd read something with romance in it but preferably not as the only plot because of the aforementioned drama and/or comedy tags that almost always comes with it.

Romance that have drama or comedy in it is okay but not overly dramatic(eg. misunderstandings or fights whatever for 50+ chapters) or comedy just for the sake of comedy(eg. all the comedy harems out there). Basically meaning not to hammer some feelings into me just 'cus it's romance.

So I picked 'don't like reading romance' but really I'd read anything other than dramatic love triangles, and you all know there's no other type of love triangle story.

Since I read a lot more romance manga than anything I seem to prefer monogamous boy/girl couples than anything else. eyes Harems seem to piss me off because the story of such manga seems weak at times.

No preferences. As long as it is well executed and isn't too laden with drama.

Most of my favourite romantic mangas have a single heterosexual couple, and usually something like Couple Growth among categories. Though among my favourite romances I have also harems, love triangles and even one shoujo ai (that one is weird though, with 2 lesbians and a guy who is kinda loves them), also I have some shounen ai not so far from my favourites. I definitely hate one night stands. But still prefer monogamous couples, gender of lovers or even gender bending doesn't matter as long as it has a non-cliche type of romance. Love triangles and harems might fit in if they are unique enough. But one night stand isn't a romance, I generally grade those below 6 at best.

Also a correction to above thought, harems I usually like not for Romance, though some of them are for romance, especially if they actually have a harem ending, where MC actually chooses polygamy properly. There are so many ways to choose it improperly that I was unpleasantly surprised =(

I can't quite find an appropriate option.
I prefer monogamous relationships, but having the only options be "boy/girl" or "same sex" is rather weird and foolish (no offence meant).

I don't like guy/guy relationships. They're fine and all, but it's not what I like to read/watch.
I do enjoy girl/girl stories, however.
Many have the opposite opinion (enjoying boy/boy, but not girl/girl).
Thus having an option, that a lot of people can't choose, because they only half agree with it, is rather unwise.

Boy/girl or girl/girl. Either is fine by me (if anything, I might have a bit of a preference towards girl/girl).
Thus none of the options are valid.

I generally dislike harem (note that one girl, many guys [sometimes termed a "reverse" harem] is still a harem). Most stories that involve harem, are pretty shit ...and the harem aspect, is generally not something I like, even in good series with harems.
Love triangles... that depends.
One night stands... Well, there's not really much to those, so: No. (frankly, I fail to see how a one night stands would even qualify as being "romance", in any way)

I voted "I don't like reading romance," which is only partially true. For awhile now, I've mainly steered clear of the genre because I am so sick of sloppily-written romance cliches, and anything with even a hint of wish fulfillment in it has me running in the opposite direction so fast I get whiplash. -sigh- Now a good romance -- that's something I'd love to read no matter the type of relationship, be it boy/girl, girl/boy, boy/boy, girl/girl, non-gender-binary, monogamous, polyamorous, asexual, love geometry, what have you. 'Cause I'm always up for a good story! eyes

I'm pretty open to everything except for harems. I'm often not a big fan of love triangles either, but it depends on how the author employs them.
