Now this is kind of hard to choose, but an "All of the above" option would be too easy. I suppose in the end, despite any other annoyances, I want the author to properly end a series. I can understand if it can't be helped, like the author DIES, or is unable to draw, but I will be pissed if a series I'm following, or love, just up and ends mid way.

Besides that, I hate when authors use the same characters: ADACHI Mitsuru. I swear, he uses the same characters over and over.

The thing that actually annoys me the most is when the author creates all this chemistry between two character, but nothing happens between them.

Seeing as something like that isn't on the list, I'm gonna go for discontinuing a series or throwing it on hiatus. I know that sometimes it's not the authors fault, but an unfinished story is truly infuriating.

I think the discontinuation/hiatus option is kind of unneccesary, everyone hates when a series they like stops O.o This is actually an interesting poll, but there is already such a bias to the discontinuation/hiatus option that there probably won't be very clear results between the other options...

I seriousley hate authors who make plot too generic which includes the generic protagonist who have heart of gold and always talk non-sense about friendship and believes that even killing an enemy is not a right thing.
The one who always sprouts about ideal world....
For eg. Naruto manga. His speech and personality really pisses me off.

Since when is a discontinue the responsibility of the author? The publishers kill a series, if it lacks popularity. Their is a good reason for a hiatus, sickness, lost inspiration, and everyone needs a vacation. Anyway you can't blame them to be later with it as quality needs time.

I'd have to go with author fetishes. For example, IM Dal-Young family complex fetish. Almost all of the series that i have read by this author has main characters with sister/brother complex or mother/father complex.

Basically when a mangaka keeps using same plot devices in different series. Another example would be author of Suzuka. Kimi no iru Machi is basically Suzuka 2.0.

Personnally I hate it when all the characters look the same, because even if the plot is interesting it becomes nearly impossible to read and understand everything just by the art. And then there are authors whose art is so distinct that every single characters from every story look the same. eg.: Hwang Mi Ri. But even then her stories are almost the same thing over and over.

Of course noone likes to have a series discontinued, but then most of the time its not the authors fault, most of the time the publishers end the series because the profit is not enough. And somethimes the authors lost he drive and doesn't know how to continue the storie or as an idea for another story. It's all relative probably the author preferes to end a story just like that instead of watching it decay.

But then Its just my opinion.

Killing of main chara, same face on different character in other series, disliking art style is ok as long as it has good story and delivered in good way. A plot that makes no senses however, could kill the the story, and at the end, the reader will start to hate not only the plot, but also the art style, because it was a reminder of the horrible story that makes no senses whatsoever.

+ I agree with the -same plot devices in different series- thing. Ex :Watase Yuu. Its basically the same story over and over again. But still, its not as annoying as nonsensical plot.

Kill off the main character - most of the story i read have good reason to kill the character, so i dont feel this is bad. why would people raging on the author just because he dont give the good ending they want but what the story need?

Have such similar characters (looks or personality) that you confuse them - i really really hate them because it make the whole thing confusing. and it is much more aggravating that this phenomenon don't usually occur in shounen series with 50+characters, but with shoujo stories with only three characters where i only need to keep track of them, and they just need to draw both guys with the same look with slightly different hair because the artist thought that is the most beautiful facial feature ever!!!!!

Draw the same faces on different characters in other series - it dont bother me because it's not i read them simultaneously.

Discontinue the series (or hiatus) - it only bring ire when the mangaka have hiatus almost every other chapter (cough,hxh, cough), but it should be understandable most of the way it is not their fault. none want their story never get finished right?

Divert the plot away from the main characters - sometimes its bad, but a good artist can make it work. it depend on the story.

Have characters step out of character - its pretty hateable when the character get thrown the idiot ball or somehow have 'hidden talent' just for plot progression. but even more disgusting is when depraved, sadistic, murderous rapist become a 'lovable rouge' after get beaten and friending the mc. defeat mean friendship my ass.

Copy art or story from another author - i never notice, so it doesn't bother me.

Being too formulaic - cliche done well is still very fun. i hate it when they try to be more edgy and original but the story and characters go all over the place. the pretentiousness is even more laughable.

Have a plot that makes no sense - very very hateful when the author just pull the plot out of his ass. we know when you just winging it, man. it's okay if it is a deliberate trippy manga, but most is just bad writing.

Have lots of plot holes - i think this is the same with the above. i know its hard to plan in advance, but it is not too hard others can do it, right?

This was very hard because several were my top pet peeves but I had to go with discontinued/or on hiatus. At least if you start a series, especially like me who collects them, I would like to finish it.

The next for me would be have a plot that makes no sense. You're confused and spending too much time trying to make sense instead of enjoying the story.

These two are basically the same so I pair them together. Have such similar characters (looks or personality) that you confuse them and draw the same faces on different characters in other series. I often try to refer back to a series by the same author and get mistaken because characters look alike. It's worst when they are in the same series. Ugh!

I voted for having characters that look the same. I've actually had to stop reading a manga before because I couldn't tell the characters apart, so I couldn't follow the story.

The reason I didn't vote for discontinue or hiatus, even though this annoys me more, is because in the stories I've come across that have been discontinued or put on hiatus it was out of the authors hands. Like if an author gets sick and can't finish the series, or if the series isn't popular enough and the publisher decides to get rid of it. I haven't read a story where the author just decided for no good reason that they just didn't feel like finishing.

Those who actually like plot holes or the discontinue of their beloved series shall step out of the shadows NOW. Might become a really interesting conversation. There might be readers who see sense in plots I see as senseless. That is a problem of definition. But Discontinue.... I really want to see someone who isn't bothered by that. Even worse than that is the axed end I think. But didn't find that choice. I also miss the "Kill off your favorite character" choice. I really hate it then my favorite dies. And I think thats more like a pet peeve then killing of the main.

I saw "plot that makes no sense" and I jumped on the choice immediately.
That's a total manga turn-off to me.

It's also no limited to bad storytelling, but also just too much content, new things to learn, weird system of a fantasy world or whatever. For example, in this new world there's a evil thing called a "Blahxypheria" and the good thing called a "Forablah" and the protagonist is a really a "Meablahblene", etc. etc.

So that's just a big personal turnoff to me, haha.

"Have characters step out of character" when it's for obvious 'sucking up to mainstream readers' reasons. For instance, when a character has a quirky and not 'politically correct' personality,and then starts to behave like a good lil' hero, or (worse) give in fanservice...
For example, I recently read Arachnid, which had promising characters and a promising plot, and I feel that the protagonist became little miss fanservice completely out of the blue (and let's not talk about the plot). That kind of turnaround (with maybe a bit of editor meddling) usually pisses me off.

I truly hate discontinuing the series. The others were bad as well, but discontinuing the manga is very aggravating.

Discontinuing the series sucks, yes, but what I hate even more is when a series goes on for a while, has hit its good points then continues on with the characters acting all different or strange for no reason or if they have no serious development (like maybe High School Debut for me)

honestly, my pet peeve with authors is putting comedy mixed with drama... it's fine to have banters and witty remarks within the characters, but when someone gets punched in the face and flies to the moon, it ruins the mood of the drama it built up. Another pet Peeve, in a truly dramatic scene, especially in shounen mangas, THEY NEVER LET THE MAIN CHARACTER DIE! or some of the side characters that develop the main. and then they drag the story. e.g. bleach, d-grayman. One of the reasons why i hate... apparently it's so common that one overcomes a huge obstacle and comes out stronger every single time... it doesn't matter if he took a fatal bullet shot to the skull, it doesn't matter if all of a sudden his entire body organs began to fail and fall out of his butt, the author will always make sure they survive just for the sake of continuing the story

Actually i have chosen "Discontinue the series (or hiatus)" but for me it's even broader, I just hate it when manga ends (at all) of course I hate rushed endings even more but the thing is I always want continuation. I think hiatus is better then ending, especially if hiatus does end eventually.

But actually I do like to other things too:

I don't care about art that much but story and plot are very important. If plot doesn't make sense I won't last even few chapters most of the time (well 10% of time i still continue reading because of comedy)

And i don't like when story is copied. Well if characters are all new and only setting is the same then it ok, but if somebody takes characters of the other author then i think that won't do. For example I never read Doujinshi that are based on manga/anime/novel, because I believe that only original author can write stories about those characters. Though if author of the plot is the same then it's ok to reuse characters I think.

But still if it one of last to then I may still read it (rarely but I do), but if manga is discontinued then I 100% won't read it anymore (guess why)

I'll just disregard the discontinued option. I guess I'd go with the plot makes no sense one. Similar characters whom I can't tell apart is second I think. None of these are good to have though, except maybe killing off the main or diverting the plot from them. That doesn't bother if it's done well.

One option I'd add is when author just blatantly go into full exposition mode without even attempting to integrate it into the storytelling.

Y'know I recently started reading Freezing, which suffers from probably most of these options now that I think about it, but the exposition really started bugging me for some reason. One scene literally stops all action mid-fight and cuts to a bystander's inner monologue explaining the powers, (to herself), for a couple pages. Complete with diagrams. I get that it's good information for the reader to have, but come on they're at a school learning this stuff is it that hard to put that in a classroom scene?

As soon as I saw "discontinue the series (or HIATUS)" Berserk and Vagabond immediately came to mind. Awesome stories but those freaking long hiatuses...

My biggest pet peeve is when the author rushes the ending and it just ruined the entire series for me. Hate axed endings!!

On one hand you have the discontinuing/hiatus, which is annoying, but I can sympathize with that because I know that there is stuff going on behind the scenes that we may not know about, like the author getting a Top Priority project, or health issues.

But what grinds my gear more than that is when the author drags on the series with little to no plot development for no beneficial reason. Like you wait patiently for the volume to come out, and there is literally nothing important to make the volume really worth it. And I understand the stories that may have one or two "slow" volumes, but if every. single. one of them is like that and it's clear that there was supposed to be a progression in the plot, that pisses me off. I guess that falls under the plot that makes no sense/plot holes...but really, that should be it's own option as well.

It's usually "going fancy" gone wrong, when we get the feeling that even the author doesn't know where the fuck does he come up with the stuff. This has to get my vote (aside from discontinued).

Other pet peeves of mine are rushed endings and ridiculous amounts of exposition for jack shit story-wise. Mahou Sensei Negima! Anyone? Specifically during the magic world arc.

I really like the basic idea behind this poll, but some of options create really obvious flaws. How many people enjoy it when their favorite series gets canceled? Or when the plot is full of holes? Or when a plot makes no sense (barring comedy)? The point of a pet peeve is that at least SOME people must be unaffected by it. If 99% of the reading population would be annoyed by it, it's not a pet peeve.

So besides those three, I've got to vote for being too formulaic. I don't know what it is about mainstream manga, but most of it is as trite and cliche as a Hollywood blockbuster. Just like a Hollywood blockbuster, mainstream manga is engineered to be a hit, with the same recycled plots, characters, and lines. It's all about the money, there's no room for vision, voice, or taste.

It's a real shame too, because manga has so much potential for storytelling. It mixes the dynamic movement of a film with the pacing of a novel. But it seems so few authors take full advantage of their medium.

I can deal with most of this. Killing off the main character? That takes some balls on the author's side; I actually think it usually ups the drama pretty well. Dividing the plot between characters? Good for variation. No plot to speak of? Not necessarily a problem if the setting is comedic enough. None of these points would in itself be a complete contract killer for me to be honest; it can include one or even several flaws and I can still find it readable. It doesn't even have to be a bad thing.

So...I guess what irks me the most, like many others, is the series that are axed/discontinued/put on hiatus. In a good series, I suppose this is always a bad thing...

My worst pet peeve is, in fact, that the authoor almost NEVER take the time to write a good ending for a series. Almost all the times, the ending feels rushed, not really thought of, as if the author was just bored and said "let's just finish this".

Kill off the main character i think this should not be taken as an equal to "the author is bad", because the author kills his character thinking that's the best ending there could be. It is our own interpretations and tastes that make the fact seem something bad.

At least the clothes might make it easier, and you can guess it with many hints from the flow of the story, but having to do such a brain-wrecking action just to know who's talking/moving etc is too much. Should be considered the failure of the author in his/her try to make a good, original character design for each character. That is, unless the two characters need to be alike, for the story. Such as twins or something like that. (even for those kind of situations, there should be something we could differentiate them with, just the bangs going opposite ways won't do, because manga is not like real life. Depending on the angle of the drawing, some manga-ka change the way the hair goes. For example, when a characters switches from looking to right to left, the hair also changes sides). I have quite a bad memory with this, my friend was drawing a manga with two characters exactly the same, but who had no reason for being the same. And said how I was the only one who knew who was who (I made great efforts. uhh), but I should have realized it was her fault and not mine and I shouldn't be the one to e on her good side. I was always like "hehe, really, it's easy..hehe...why would you mix them...hehe..."

Draw the same faces on different characters in other series - at first it will be confusing and a bit displeasing, but it's not like it's the same character. It's just that the manga-ka wanted to draw them like that because it fits their personality, it's not like they made them similar on purpose. It's not like all authors make different types of eyes and such for every character. Sailor Moon, for example.

I think a hiatus or discontinuation is not the author's fault. Because these kind of things come with a reason the author can't argue with. For Hiatus - it could be anything. What if the author falls really ill and is hospitalized? If we say "what is this author doing? making us wait? just draw already" then it's like saying we aren't complaining and accept the situation every time the teacher or boss makes us work even though we aren't feeling well or something and does't even care. And for Discontinuation - the author really has nothing to say about that. A series is discontinued when it's not popular/well received enough. The magazine they're drawing for just says "in X chapters, you end this series". And it's not like they can just draw the continuation and publish it as a doujinshi or something, because they don't have the time for that. If they want to continue to try and make it as a successful manga-ka, then they would not have the time to continue the discontinued series, they will surely try and draw something else. Because it's not like money's falling from the sky.
The one thing I can't understand is why people can't accept these situation. I'm more like, I will wait forever for a hiatus to end. I'm not in any position to complain anyway.

Divert the plot away from the main characters - This should be considered good. Developing all your characters is important. If not, they're just there to connect the story when you can't do that without having a character push the story forward. Anyway, many people say "your character has no personality" and in manga contests "Characters" is one of the judged parts of the manga. Well, sometimes if the character annoys me, of course I don't want to read a whole chapter or even 10 about him/her. Even more so when I know the manga-ka's doing this in order to show his/her past and make me like that character. Because, why make me hate him/her and then want me to like him/her. But, in the case when you like the character, you'll be happy to see him/her more, right?XD

Have characters step out of character - Hmmm this could be in a way a side of character development. Authors might want to show that "this character can also make this kind of expression". And I see no one complains when a good for nothing character goes and becomes all cool in order to do something awesome as protecting someone. That's out of the character for me.

Copy art or story from another author - That is inevitable. Everyone has an idol or a preferred subject (like psychology, mystery etc) so it's not like they're doing it on purpose. For example, I like the art of a manga-ka. But maybe I see another manga-ka that resembles this one. It might seem annoying if you don't think enough, but when you go surf the large web, you'll see lots of amateur artists with that kind of art style. Trust me on this. The story? The word "cliche" should exist for this purpose, is it not? If I were to comment on how this author made the same "cultural festival" setting in their story like some other author did, I wouldn't get anywhere.
Of course, doing it on purpose is not good. Like stealing art and such. I have seen these kind of cases, even for real manga-ka. Plagiarism will always be tried when you think you "can do it, so why not do it? Just a little bit from here and there, I like the idea". I hate those kind of things...but some of them can't even fall into a category. Like, is it on purpose or not? Sometimes eve you yourself can't figure out the answer.

Being too formulaic - This depends on tastes. Solely on tastes.That's what I think. (that is, if I got the meaning of the word "formulaic" right, ehe!)

Have a plot that makes no sense - A plot that makes no sense can't be considered annoying anymore. It's more like, a failure as a story. If no one can get what's happening, I wonder how the author made it this far with such a failure of a story. Or maybe it's me who doesn't understand it. For example, if you made me summarize FLCL, I wouldn't be able to do it. For me, that thing was a complete mess and I didn't get anything from it. Not that I tried too much, I hated the characters anyway, all of them annoyed them to the maximum. At least, that's how it was when I watched that anime. Left me with a "bleargh" expression.

Have lots of plot holes - That should be considered annoying. I mean, you've got an editor, at least make the plot holes less. With two minds thinking, or even some friends to help, one should be able to do it. But still, what's impossible remains impossible. It's like making me say what's 1+1 when I haven't learned any math.

Dislike his/her art style - this one, there's no way of curing this. Just a strong mind who can accept anything. Eh, me, for example, although I choose more based on art (shame on me), I don't criticize someone's art. And if the story is interesting, I could care less about art. Also, really bad art won't pass and be made into an official manga. If the art is good, then the style's at fault. And with the style, you can get accustomed. There was this manga, Akuma de Sourou. At first the art looked like "what's this i don't like it!" but at the end I was squealing at how cute the man male character is.

Draw the same faces on different characters in other series : The best example would be Hiro Mashima's Fairy Tail and Rave. Many characters have same design especially the female one. Also you can hardly distinguish between female characters in Fairy Tail especially in the starting
