Legend of the Galactic Heroes Gets New Anime Project by Production I.G in 2017
(4 posts, 1704 views) Posted: over 8 years ago by senile_seinen in Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu
I strongly suspect that the success of the Yamato remake and the recent Macross, Gundam and Lupin III franchise extensions is the driver here.

Production IG does excellent work when the budget is high enough. Color me optomistic.
New Poll - Genders and Games
(23 posts, 5309 views) Posted: over 8 years ago by senile_seinen in News
I don't think I can answer this question with the answers provided. I'm male and I tend to make whatever kind of character seems to round out the party or fit the scenario better. I think I'm about 50/50 on this one. I've played more male characters, but that's because...

Age Difference Romances..why are some taboo? [Rant]
(10 posts, 2709 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in Manga General
In the USA it's illegal for a person above age 18 to have a sexual relationship with a person under something defined as the 'age of consent' which varies depending on just where you are in the country, but averages age 16. A few places still allow marriage with parental...

The Rise of Novels
(27 posts, 5538 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in Manga General
Like a lot of people, I got into light novels during the Haruhi thing. The anime came out and people started scanlating the manga, but at the same time a batch of translators and editors founded Baka-Tsuki and started working on the novels.

They pretty much single-handedl...
Fuuka now, wow...

So he killed her off? Well, I thought he was just recycling Suzuka and KNIM, so this is an improvement. I'd dropped it about 20 chapters ago anyway.

Maybe he's going to rip off Kirara and have her be a ghost guiding her boyfriend in the past?
Has anyone played any galge games in English and what were your thought on it?
(7 posts, 2583 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in Games
What, no love for Katawa Shoujo? It's basically a doujin galge written by all native English speakers on one of the common game engines. Good music, not bad plots, and does a good job of not having the usual total doormat main character.
Under Rated Manga with Awesome Plot, Twist and Art

I'll second Amagoi, which is a happy recent discovery, and add a bonus of Houseki no Kuni, which is another happy recent discovery.

Forgot to mention Chimoguri Ringo to Kingyobachi Otoko, which definitely isn't following 'the rules.'

If you can find another setting like Hou...
Under Rated Manga with Awesome Plot, Twist and Art
(19 posts, 3823 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in I'm Looking For...
I don't know exactly which genre you're looking for, but seinen/josei are going to generally be where you find the weirder (and thus more interesting) plots.

There actually have been quite a few manga lately that I looked at as being unusual treatments of usual (or unusual...
New Poll - Manga App
(38 posts, 5883 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in News
I pretty much only read manga on my 10" Android tablet. I used to read it on a laptop, but then the laptop died and all the replacement options had 16x9 screens which were great for viewing manga...if you turned the laptop sideways. The old high-res 4x3 screens were bet...
A Silent Voice - Koe no Katachi Manga to End on November 12
(2 posts, 2871 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in Koe no Katachi
I saw some commentary to this effect on 4chan back in August quoting an interview as its source. Not surprised. The plot really can go only so many places. They're frankly smart not to go over 9000 with it...
Why the weak heroines?
(12 posts, 3251 views) Posted: over 9 years ago by senile_seinen in Shoujo/Josei
Shoujo heroines usually have to be doormats because a) that's the societal role message Japanese shoujos get every day, and the shoujo manga published tend to deliberately reinforce it, and b) because the shoujo version of a bildungsroman has to include doormat-protagonis...
New Poll - Bust
(96 posts, 13948 views) Posted: over 10 years ago by senile_seinen in News
In manga, I like them to 'make sense' for the character. If the girl is, say, a serious athlete, it's generally rare to see a lot of fat anywhere on her, including her chest. Anything involving a first year highschooler or younger should probably be pretty flat-chested ...
New Poll - Fonts (v2)
(70 posts, 18872 views) Posted: over 11 years ago by senile_seinen in News
This is the day of machine lettering in comics and manga both. From what I have seen, the people typing the text into the bubbles are at the very bottom of the manga production food chain. I doubt there's either the time or the artistic force from the letterers to cause...
New Poll - Fonts (v2)
(70 posts, 18872 views) Posted: over 11 years ago by senile_seinen in News
My typesetting on the first couple of chapters of HnFM is a little embarrassing because I was still learning the mechanics, but I went back and looked at the font choices and found little to complain about. That said, Hara's not the most creative mangaka where fonts are ...
New Poll - Fonts (v2)
(70 posts, 18872 views) Posted: over 11 years ago by senile_seinen in News
I am a super font snob. In my own scanlation work, on Hoshi no Furu Machi, WA!, and Mangaka-san there was always consideration of authorial intent.the original Japanese fonts used and application of a particular font (SFX, shouts, whispers, printed/displayed vs spoken, e...

a Manga that makes fun of cliches
(21 posts, 4374 views) Posted: over 11 years ago by senile_seinen in I'm Looking For...
Maoyuu Maou Yuusha practically is all making fun of sword and sorcery game cliches. The characters don't even have names - they're known entirely by their character class.

Ouran Koukou Host Bu also qualifies. But I have to say that the anime does a better job than the ma...

Soothing seinen has quite a bit of what you seek, although the plots might be a little relaxed if you like shounen.

Aqua
Aria

But also:

Hidamari Sketch
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Kabu no Isaki

And all of you suggesting CLAMP works like [m]XXXholic wer...

I'm surprised no one mentioned Aria and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. They're among the best slice of life I've read so far. Genshiken also kinda fits I guess.

Seconding both Aria and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. You're not going to find more soothing seinen mat...

You're heading toward tsundere territory with this. There are a lot of tsundere comedy romance mangas out there. But you're not asking for that, so I'll try to keep the tsundere down to a dull roar.

Off the top of my head:

REC
Mysterious Girlfriend X
Suzuka
Maison Ikkoku
