I remember reading this a quite long time ago, it was good but I can't say that I enjoyed it. It gave me a very uneasy feeling after finished reading.
Maybe the manga's message is something like "love is unpredictable it may come when you least expect it" but the only thing came to my mind after reading this was "Love is not forever, because people change".
It's not a matter of reality or not I just find the series not positive (and likeable) at all.

I read Rules before I read Hydra... which probably was not a smart thing to do for me... because, initially I felt like Hikaru was too much of a puss... just sitting and waiting for Yuki to come around. Never getting pissed at Yuki for deviating (and making out with Atori). And I just couldn't get how Hikaru could just have all of the patience in the world. And act all so understanding and cool. Don't get me wrong, the story was well written and I liked the characters a lot. Drawings are excellent. Storyline is excellent. I just found Hikaru's character to be kind of... unreal...
With that said, I initially rated the manga at 9.5. But after reading Hydra... I now want to rate this manga a 10 (but won't because my first initial response was not a 10). So I have upped the rating to 9.8. Why? Because I now understand Hikaru's character... after reading Hydra... I can see why Hikaru is so patient... and not forceful with Yuki. I like Hikaru a lot now.
Anyway, I suggest you reading Rules after Hydra. But that's just my opinion.

First of all I want to make it clear that the story is good, the narration, the characters and the art makes the story special but it would not be something I put as my top manga.
It was a good manga but I would never read it again since the story gives me insecurity. Like the pairing would be different if they meet at different time, or the sex encounters are switched between characters, since that actually more important than their feelings. Make u not to trust in real love.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
1) The young ones always end up with the ones they have have sexual encounter first (and a complete stranger), I feel it shows the idea of "body first and mind follows" Especially, Atori, why try on someone you know as a complete slut?
2)And they got swayed so easily, its not a love triangle but a complete maze, like every pairing is possible. So 4 people and just a little more, all of them slept together. And Yuki, wow, really u jerk off ur crush while ur bf away. And u already hurt ur bf enough by treating him as rebound/ second best partner.
3)I understand Tooru is a complex character so I try to look over all his promiscuity. But I found it stupid that he doesnt understand why Atori is mad, every human would be able to. He knows jealousy too. I think Atori's argument was pretty valid. "U think I slept with Hikari bc ur slept around yourself" Too bad, no response to that bc of interruption. At the end, they didnt even touch it, easy going with the ex-bf issue. Sigh.
4) The whole Hikaru x Atori is just out of no where and inconsiderate of Yuki (not like he doesnt deserve it for his wishy-washy attitude) And sometimes the sexual relationship is possible between Yuki & Atori too, which should not be happening at all.

It's wonderful manga done by a mangaka who's characters have depth. Understandably this has a few volumes as well as doujinshis attached to it so she had room to allow her characters to grow. There are only a handful of mangaka's that create this wonderful world exploring different facets of a gay relationship and Miyamoto Kano is one of them.

i heard of this story on Liquid Passion's site and i decided to read it.
luckily, the site has a chronological list so, i was able to read the series in the order miyamoto-sensei meant it to be in
...and i have to say: RULES is one of the best BL manga series i have ever read. period.
seriously, there really is no cliche to this manga.
the story and the characters are all very well developed.
miyamoto-sensei really takes her time in her storytelling and it really shines through.
this manga is very realistic and never cheesy. <33
i could really relate to each character and definitely got attached to Hikaru
[especially when he was younger with his short hair in high school haha]
you really get a sense of how each character feels not only though dialogue but also through miyamoto kano's clean artwork.
if you really want a well-written, beautifully drawn, and realistic story of finding love,
the RULES series is absolutely a must read (:

whenever somebody complains that yaoi isn't realistic (yeah, and erotica in general is?) i whip out miyamoto kano's work. it's very different from the idealized bishounen world; miyamoto's people feel real. there are no stupid stereotypical seme and uke here; the terms should never even come to mind; it is completely irrelevant who sticks what where. the realism also means that not all relationships work out, and not all her stories end happily. "rules" is probably my favourite of her work overall because we get so much time with the characters, and we see them grow and change as they move into adulthood.
at first i didn't like her art a whole lot because it is so loose and sketchy (except for her colour art which i've always loved), but i came to appreciate it quickly because she is so adept at showing emotion with the tiniest quirk of a line.
the sex is not glossed over, but it's also never gratuitous; it's simply a part of the lives of the characters. i just don't see this primarily as erotica, and i never use it that way.

I like how the manga traced the changes in the characters and their relationships. The physical (hairstyle, addition of piercings) changes were refreshing, but as a reader I felt like I changed and grew with the characters as well.
I definitely enjoyed Tooru and Atori's story in Rules Volume 2 and 3. There was sexual promiscuity on Tooru's part, but I like that overall there was a good mix of love and sex. Sometimes relationships start from lust, but love will be there to change and recalibrate that relationship. The piercings and tattoos were an added bonus for me.
Even though some people might not like it because of the love polygon and seemingly tangled relationships, I felt that it added more edge to the manga. Love and relationships in reality aren't that clear-cut and straightforward either.

Don't get me wrong, it's quite a good manga but, with all the great stories (specially Hydra) building up to this, I kinda expected more. Ack! Hikaru deserved a bigger, more *doki* *doki* romance after all he went through... I guess it's a good manga as a stand alone and it's my fault that I can't help but compare. I really don't like all that sleeping around though so I can't honestly give this a 10.

this is truly one awesome manga!!
i'm really smitten by sensei's works
previously all the yaoi manga i've read, even if they had pretty artwork, there was no real plot or substance to it...like ur average cliche manga..
but kono sensei's manga seem...like as if they ain't manga but something spun out of real life...
i totally fell for bun in the walker saga & even rules is truly an amazing read...
like those fresh mangas which u really have to search a lot for before u stumble over it..!?
i'll give it a 10.
its a must read manga & all those who're really lookin' forward to reading an absorbing manga i'd recommend kono sense's rules XD
