Random Walk should be named Random Dating
by Celianna

Rating: 4.0  / 10.0
I agree with the rest of the reviewers here, the name shouldn't have been Random Walk, instead it should have been Random Dating, as that's what the main character does all the freaking time.

Random Walk stars main character Yuka. She's had a few boyfriends already, and now she's a first year in high school. She meets a random boy, and decides she likes him. She asks to be his girlfriend, he says yes. Chapters go on, and they break up. Yuka meets a new boy and decides she likes him. They date, they break up. Rinse and repeat for 3 more times.

Random Walk offers almost nothing new. The art is bland and the main character's design gets lost in the rest of the shoujo genre art. She's nothing special. She's got a rather flat personality, and the only thing we see her 'liking' apart from boys, is taking pictures. All the boys have zero personality too, and very questionable morals.

Since the characters are so bland, you don't really feel like reading the rest anymore, since you don't care what happens to any of them. Sure the manga tries to portray a more realistic way of teen dating, since I've known plenty of girls myself who were exactly like Yuka (randomly dating guys they don't know, and breaking up within 3 days to a week), but there was one thing that really bothered me about this realistic portrayal. There was no jealousy. You'd think that since they're teenagers, and they've dated plenty of times before, that their current girlfriend or boyfriend would get jealous of their past relationships, or would get jealous if they saw them with another girl/boy.

But there's absolutely no jealousy in this manga. The only 'conflict' this manga has is that you know they're going to break up, and you're skimming through the pages, waiting for this to happen. I'm also very surprised that nothing else happened besides kissing. Where's the sexual tension when you're in a relationship? Like the jealousy part, it's non-existent.

I wouldn't recommend reading Random Walk. It's not really enjoyable, with bland characters who you don't care about, little to no plot, and nothing ever progresses further than kissing. That, and the ending was cut very short.

Really interesting point of view!

I thought it was really interesting how the main protagonist is basically the 'rival' girl from any other shoujo manga. It was really cool to see everything happen from the other side of things, though I can see why it could be frustrating if you were reading it like you would a usual manga, expecting the protagonist to end up with the guy she initially falls for.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I mean, first she loses her rich boyfriend to a poor girl, then she dates somebody who is already spoken for because he keeps hitting on her, and THEN her new boyfriend dumps her for a girl in the hospital who thinks she’ll only be able to get better if he dates her.
I know I’ve read all those scenarios before, but not from this angle. As long as you go into the manga kind of expecting to root for the other pairings, I think you’ll enjoy it more.

I found Yuka to be a refreshing lead - as someone else pointed out, she's definitely not a shy/withdrawn type, or a tomboy type, or even an endearingly clumsy type, which sets her apart from many other shoujo protagonists. She doesn't really change who she is when she's with a guy she likes, and while she's popular, she's not really a 'leader' in the class (nor does she immediately go for a convenient delinquent who doesn't follow the rules/isn't interested in her like everyone else). If a guy expresses interest in her (and he’s cute!), she’ll probably date him, and develop feelings for him after. Which, in a lot of ways, I think is really realistic, especially for a high school girl - it isn’t always mutual love right away, or even an initial rejection that eventually grows into love.

Not to say this manga was perfect, because it was really too short and underdeveloped, especially with the final pairing, and none of the characters or relationships really touched me (probably on account of, again, the manga being very short) … but it was still nice to read, and I will probably go back through it again at some point.

The story is fine, it has some moral lessons but other than that I didn't like it that much. I guess I prefer love stories where the female lead has firm principles which they loyally abide with. I agree with one of the comments, this manga should just be renamed to random dating, random walk makes me think of a story about a main character who had fallen in-love with a person she just met who happend to be her soulmate and that she begins to think of him more often and tries to search for him in secret.

If you wanted to read this manga because of its romance then you'll probably be disappointed. It's not really the type of story were you'll feel that feeling of "Awwww, so cute" or "Oooooh, I want the same love story" or "Wow, that story made me blush."

Spoiler (highlight to view)
The summary was a bit misleading, although it was true, it made me think that she was going to end up with the Nozomu. I mean most summaries always tend to put the main protagonist of the story in the summary of a manga. Because of the summary, I thought the manga's romance was about the perils of love between two people. If I had known that the story was about the phases of love which includes cheating, being cheated on, and stuff then I would have never read it.

You should just skip this one and just read her other manga, Spicy Pink. It still lacks development but a considerably better manga than this one.

It's a shame that Yoshizumi's art style is so blandly indistinguishable from that of so many other artists, because this series is actually moderately interesting.

It's a quite rare shoujo romance that lacks idealization of love or melodrama, but doesn't go the other direction into angst. It's a fairly low key story about teenagers who get into relationships, but get bored or drift apart and break up. Surprisingly realistic portrayal of innocent emotional immaturity (there are no villains, for example).

It's found a tiny, unique niche to fit in, which makes it worth reading. It isn't actually anything to rave about, though.

It was okay, wasn't great, but not bad. I would've like it so much better if her love with the step brother took up more chapters instead of those random guys that date her, then dump her for some other girl. AND, it happens like 3 times, pretty much the exact same thing.

slightly terrible? i kinda couldn't tear my eyes from it until the end, like a train wreck... i didn't get all too attached to the characters, and for being three volumes there wasn't that much development... although the relationships (many) were somewhat realistic, they weren't very worth getting attached to. when she finally found "love" it was kinda a joke at that point in my opinion.

this was just... not terrible, but a little above? idk, if you like drama and relationships and mistakes? you might like this. just not something that will ever stand out to me.

I've read enough YOSHIZUMI Wataru's works to say that alot of her works are loved and some are just meeeh~, and this is just one of the mangas that didn't leave me a good impression. it's just bad. i dont like the idea of "its-okay-to-go-after-all-the-guys-in-the-world-till-you-find-love" story. that's just totally bs. It wasn't that good to spend your time on and its pretty predictable who she would her final stop is.

I now know why it's called random walk. It's because of the random/plenty boys yuka liked. It's kind of predictable that yuka would end up w/ his step brother i thought. but it didn't develeop and ended kind of differently. the story w/ the winning boy was short while others are longer. unfair. It was such a short story too bad.

Its a bit slow it lacks in alot of areas and is wayyy to much a repeat of marmalade boy in who she ends up with which was so obvious! so really nothing new from this manga-ka. Also the girl is just so unreal and under developed its at times hard to feel anything for her.
