A long journey but a good one

I've been reading this manga for several years now and I can safely say it never gets old. Waiting for the translations to come out is an extremely slow process but I can stick with it because it's a solid piece of work. I admire how the base of the characters don't change. Everyone but Ayase is already in their adulthood, they know what they want and how to go about it. Ayase is the one who makes the most character development as a result. He is still the quite and naive guy who looks like he hasn't hit puberty yet... but he's been more strong-willed and opinionated. Of course with this development as a hidden gem the manga is full of sex (mostly rape, in the beginning, the transition is a little difficult to see), fighting (mostly about/over Ayase), and the Yakuza world. If any of these topics bother you then you shouldn't read it, but if you can withstand them please take a look. It isn't shota by the way! Yes, Ayase is small and frail, there are small and frail guys who bottom to a bear like top in real life too!!

My firs yaoi manga...doesn't meen I love it...

Well, how should I start? it was my first yaoi manga ever, so you can imagine the shock I had seeing Ayase. At first I thought: wtf? is it a girl? and yes, the way the characters are drawn it's unbelievably wrong and disappointing. But that time I thought it was good and I'm still emotionally bounded to it (first yaoi manga).
Now, I can't say the same, after discovering better ones. The story wasn't so bad in the beginning but turned out to be repetitive and the characters don't change much, not to say at all (same old same old: Ayase is always in danger and Kanou does everything to save him only to both end in the bed having sex...and every fucking male character wants a part of the uke). The development doesn't occur and it's getting boring and frustrating after a while because, let's face it: the manga is still ongoing and only 39 chapters appeared until now. Kind of slow, if you ask me.
Another point that I personally don't like is how Ayase is dressed: being realistic, he looks like an otaku that tries to copy some fantasy anime characters.
Some people say it's not realistic and no way in reality things could have an outcome like the one in "Okane ga nai". I consider it more like a distorted mirror of the reality.
I do not recommend it to beginners of the yaoi genre, because you will misunderstand the genre.
It's not that I hate it or love it, it's just another one in the reading list and waiting, hoping, maybe the authors will make it better from now one till the end. Otherwise, I'll live under the impression that the male authors wanted to mock the homosexual society creating extremely feminine uke (more like a flat-chested girl with a d**k) and a totally-denying-his-gay-nature seme (drawn 5 times bigger that the poor uke).

So wrong

This is the first time I comment on something after reading only one chapter, but it feels so stupid. Ayase looks like Sakura Hime, when she lost her memories, the same face and the same blank look, no brain at all (not to mention the idea of Sakura getting raped). And the other guy Kanou seems like a nutjob with double personality, he thinks one thing and does the exact opposite. So since he LOVES Ayase, it means he is going to kill him.

Crap

I don't recommend it. I couldn't stand the possesive lover in it. He clean pissed me off. Mostly because he had the bright idea that if he raped the uke the uke would love him. (I saw the reverse attempt of this trick in another manga, the seme tried to make the uke hate him, and failed when the uke admited he loved him. So if anyone wants to complain about how some mangas aren't realistic, I suggest over looking this factor again!) Anyway, back to the subject. I hated it. It was repetitive and the characters were mental retards. Ayase could have called the police. (Don't give me some crap about how he loved Kanou (or whatever his name was) 'cos I don't believe that.) The buying and selling of humans in most countries is illegal and so is rape!

Ayase was such a girl. This wasn't even yaoi, that's how much of a girl he was.

most feminised uke ever
by pleochroic

Rating: 4.0  / 10.0
not only feminised, but just about emasculated -- we never actually get to see his penis; it's only hinted at (and it is tiny, even considering ayase's diminutive size). ayase spends half his screen time in skirts. he's a damsel in permanent distress who cries at the drop of a hat. he's kind and gentle and forgiving of even those who harm him -- the ideal image of a traditional japanese woman. so yeah, ayase is clearly not meant to be a man at all. OGN is also thinly veiled shota because ayase is so small; i go *ouch* every time they have sex.

i hated this the first time i looked at it and put it down after the 1st volume. but with any manga that is this popular, i usually give it another chance, and read more of it to see whether it improves. so this time i have caught up with the scanlation at v8 ch39.

that was quite the slog; i should get a reward in the form of some good manga. OGN does improve. but it does so very slowly (v5), and not by much. ayase grows more of a spine, yay, but he is still dense beyond belief, and gets himself into one bad situation after another, from which he has to be rescued by kanou who solves the problem with violence, and then forces sex on ayase. half of those situations consist of some bad guy molesting ayase. kanou himself improves a little bit as well -- he's admitted that he is a (still disgusting) homo, and is considering consensual sex (!), though he doesn't actually live up to it; what happens instead is that ayase comes around. on that subject, @addicted2u seems to be confused by reading too much stupid BL: rape means to force sex on somebody against their will. it doesn't matter whether the person has a physiological reaction; it is still rape if they have not clearly consented to it. men can get an erection when they're greatly frightened -- read some science, please, before becoming an apologist for the dumbest BL trope ever. if you like rape fantasies, hey, your kink is ok, but don't call it something else. it takes until late in v7 before there is any consensual sex here; up to then it's all rape, each and every time.

alas, while OGN does improve, it never actually becomes good. heck, the art improves more than the storyline -- it is especially good in action scenes. alas i hate ayase's character design with that sharp-chinned, triangular face of which 50% is permanently tear-filled eyes, and that tiny, pouty mouth, and the girlchild body (it even looks like he has tiny breasts). the guys are a lot more appealingly drawn. there is no overarching plot, there are only plot bunnies that go on for a few chapters. for a bit there, maybe a total of one volume, it looked like the story might finally take off and garner some depth; but no, instead now every man falls in love with ayase. the chibis are cute, sure, but they don't make up for the rest. so, i am tired of it and will drop it.

The art is terrible!! It's so hard on my eyes that I had to drop it at chapter 2!
I'm not going to rate this because it won't be fair if I am only judging this manga from it's art.

I got sick of this story after several volumes of the same story repeating over and over. It's a shame that neither the characters nor plot develop on the glimmers of something deeper that show up from time to time (which had the potential to make this one of my favourites). Instead of developing the relationship of the main characters towards one of an equal loving capacity, the story heads closer and closer to a relationship based on Stockholm Syndrome than anything else (not something I usually mind reading either, by the way), simply because the author seems too scared to move away from the original setup of the story. I started to wonder if the author thought he'd (? mangaupdates says it's a guy - that kinda surprised me) lose his fans if he tried to change and develop the story and so despite having perfect opportunities to move the story forward, he chooses to take a step back to the beginning at the end of each arc.

Aside from the lack of ANY character development, the point at which I had to drop this one (for over a year now and still pending on whether I'll ever pick it back up) was the writing justifying the seme's hold over the uke and more specifically the uke accepting that he shouldn't have a life outside of the seme's because everyone under the sun will force him to sleep with them and, more specifically, despite how happy he was to make new friends and find a place he felt he could belong socially, the bad writing forced the seme to have to save his uke once again making the uke understand that he should never strive for a life of his own since, despite how happy it made him, it caused trouble for others so he should stay put and live out his life waiting for his seme to come home and rape-but-not-so-much-rape-now him every night after the seme goes off to work everyday to live out HIS life. *deep breath*

Sorry, I can't stand reading a story where someone doesn't have an ounce of self-respect and it's being shown in such a positive light with no chance of change. My morals got in the way.

...If I ever revisit this manga, I might update this comment as it HAS been a while since I've read this one.

Perversion Made [Somewhat] Elegant

What LUEser said was wierd if anything, since yaoi is a genre for women, not gays. Thats why the uke (Yukiya Ayase) looks girly in the first place (although some yaoi can have manlier bishounen, i.e. stuff by Kazuma Kodaka, Youka Nitta or Ayano Yamane) so the female reader can somewhat relate to the uke. Kouno is an awesome seme to. But to be honest, Tohru Kousaka-san's art is somewhat clunky.

But there's also this, since this yaoi (BL) manga was written by two VERY straight, male authors, it has a subtle, obscure theme of sexism and male-over-female dominance, but its subtle/obscure because they just made Yukiya Ayase-kun into a "guy"... so it almost seems if No Money (Okane ga Nai) was more for a male croud, but doesn't score being offensive because its "two guys", the "manly manwhore x poor, abused chick-with-a-dick" type of pairing instead of "manly-manwhore x poor abused young women" pairing. For some reason, the first pairing seems less offensive to a women than the hentai-y second pairing.

I give this a 5/10 if anything.

I went to hell and back!

Ok, I know a Manga expresses fantasies and all that stuff, but this is ridiculous. Where did Ayase grow up? In a hole? I mean he looks like an elementary schoolgirl, and has the personality of an empty bottle (none). He is like a little submissive puppy dog who always comes back to his master, even if he's been punished.

He doesn’t love the super evil rapist, Ayase got the Stockholm-syndrome. He needs therapy. Oh, and while he's at it, he should let himself grow some balls, and get some hormone pills. Did you ever watch the tin drum? His physique reminds me of Oscar.

Ok, now to the rapist Kanou, or should I say pedophile. He is a SSST (sadistic, sociopathic Serial killer type). What the hell is wrong with that dude? He buys a little boy to “save” him ( how generous, like there would be a difference between Kanou and some other pervert).
Then he is angered by this little retarded boy because he doesn’t remember the douche bag. (I would have suppressed the memory too, if I ever met a SSST.) After he raped him a couple times he doesn’t know why Ayase is scared of him (Ok he is scared, not even terrified WTF) and looks for advice that he gets from a transsexual pervert.
It’s an advice how to handle a pet. Oh my god. That’s sick! He doesn’t even see Ayase as a person with an own will and feelings. Well, I forgive him because Ayase reminds me of a fish on land. In the end they are perfect for each other. Both have some serious issues.

There are a lot of Manga’s with stereotypes, but this has everything.
1. The sadistic, ice cold super seme and the feminine uke that melts this layer of ice with
his a**.
2. Rape is love. (Yeah right, I would like to ask a rape victim about that)
3. The seme was straight before he met the uke (who is a girl without breasts)
4. Everybody who meets the uke falls in love with him or wants to have sex ( or both)
5. The uke has the size of the seme’s d*** (how is the coupling possible without resulting
in internal bleeding?)

And a couple more.-_-

I’m really sorry if I offended fans of the series, and I know tastes are different. So please don’t write any hate mails or death threats. Thank you smile

Screaming

I really did enjoy this series, as far as I got in it.
Which, was only the scans on the internet because my mom won't buy me it. Ehh.
In any case, Ayase-san is just so adorable that words haven't even been invented to describe him (I know, checked in the Thesaurus).
It was the first yaoi I ever watched, and because I liked those four episodes so well, I had to read the manga.
The more I read, the more I realize why each of them act the way they do in the relationship.
Kanou-san is angry because he Ayase-san still thinks that he's straight, despite how good he feels when Kanou-san touches him.
And Ayase-san is put-out because he doesn't want to have sex with Kanou-san just for money, and he doesn't want Kanou-san to think that's the only reason.
ALSO!
Poor Ayase-san always getting raped.
I've been screaming at my computer for the past couple days, saying, "YOU'RE AN IDOIT! JUST TELL HIM HOW YOU FEEL!" or "JUST LEAVE HIM ALONE FOR A SECOND, KANOU! JUST---GREAT, SO JUST RAPE HIM AGAIN! THAT'LL WORK!"
All in all, I love it.
